Bankwest Qantas World Mastercard - Worth It?

Hi all,

We have an o/s trip coming up so instead of using our 28 Degrees card, we're thinking of applying for the Bankwest World MasterCard which also has no foreign transaction fees but 50,000 sign up points and earn 0.66 points per $1 spend. I know there's a $270 annual fee, but think it is still worth having for 1 year because with a family of 5, we will be spending thousands $$ in this trip on accommodation, tickets, restaurants and shopping. Is there anything that I haven't considered or a better card for my situation? FYI - we are well covered with domestic purchases with A/E Ultimate, Explore, ANZ and Westpac Black cards.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

  • Confused why you need it at all?

  • 50,000 sign up points and earn 0.66 points per $1 spend which will be my o/s spend

  • I'd say do it if QFF is your program of choice. $270 for 50k QFF points isn't the best, but certainly getting value from your annual fee. Then all points on spend are free.

Also handy that it comes with free supplementary card (something the ANZ doesn't).

Otherwise the ANZ adventures could be good for VFF points if you like those. Bit cheaper fee, fee free foreign transactions, and better points on the amex vs Visa card (comes with both). Also a free domestic flight too.

I did see it going for 60000 sign on VFF points a little while ago. Could be worth a look?

  • I was looking at this card yesterday. Unfortunately, it had 44 days interest free as opposed to 55 days on others so I didn't quite like it.

  • Thanks tizey for reminding me about the ANZ Adventures card. It's a close call based on our usage/requirements (will be different to others):

    • Bankwest 50,000 QFF vs ANZ 40,000 VFF (found post by E5TOQUE)
    • Free Supp card vs $65 for ANZ - the additional card is very important in situations when wife & I are going to different shops or doing different things when o/s
    • 44 days interest free vs 55
    • $270 annual fee vs $225 but cheaper if require additional card
    • 0.66 QFF earn points vs 2 Rewards point on A/E and 1 pt on Visa although this advantage is reduced when converting to airline programs (2 Rewards pts for 1 Velocity pts. 2.5 pts for KrisFlyer). Also, A/E is not as widely accepted and surcharge to use
    • Starwood Gold membership vs domestic flights & 2 Virgin lounge pass. For us, more value with the Starwood membership as we can take advantage of 5% additional discount and extra perks on some of the o/s hotels in this program whereas I don't normally fly without the family so would need to buy another 4 tickets to make use of the free flight with the ANZ card.

So intend on the Bankwest card at this stage.

  • Hi,

I used to have bw qantas world when it was invite only card, annual fee was about $200 and earn rate was 1qff/$1. At that time it was probably the best CC on the market however after they cut earn rate and increased annual fee I happily switched to Bankwest Zero platinum and got AMEX platinum edge for points.

yeah so having said that I think you are better of with bw platinum zero

FYI: with online application you might end up with credit limit that does not qualify you for platinum, go to branch instead tell them what you want and they get it done for you

  • bion83 - only the World card is worth it for us with the 50,000 QFF otherwise, we'll just stick with using our 28 Degrees card & no points on spend. But thanks for sharing your experience and tip regarding card qualification. Both of us just stacked up with cards over the Xmas break for the sign-up points with the A/E and Black cards so hopefully no problems with one last card.

  • FYI - Bankwest world supplementary cards have the same number as primary card, so if one is stolen/lost your whole credit account is blocked until cards can be replaced. I found this out last night when hers got stolen yesterday - mine is now useless.

Not sure if this is the case with ANZ… But would be worth checking out if you plan on supplementary cardholder.

  • Sorry to hear about the bad new, tizey. I know it can be a pain to have to cancel cards, direct debits, etc and having to wait for replacement cards. This BankWest quirk isn't any issue for us as we will cancel the cards after our o/s trip and we will have our 28 Degrees card with us as a backup. Thanks for the feedback though.

  • What about Coles platinum Mastercard.
$89 annual fee and 2 points per dollar which is equal to about 0.85 VFF points.

  • -1

why not just k.i.s.s. use citibank plus debit card.
