Car Hire in The UK

We are going to the UK this year for a holiday. It will be all of August, and I want to rent a car over there. My questions are, would it be better to book here or wait until I get there. If the answer is book from here, with who, and if wait, who should I book with over there. We have relations over there, as far south as Dover and as far north as Inverness, so I would think that we will be doing lots of driving.
Thanks

  • Car rentals normally have pretty flexible cancellation policies.

Book something that you can cancel. Then cancel if you get a sufficiently better deal, later on.

Have a look at an online travel agent like priceline or holidayautos. Make sure you check the reviews for the company you end up renting from. Some are notorious for making up damage claims from tourists. The claims are only a few hundred dollars, so you can't claim from travel insurance and its impossible to deal with them once you've left the country.

Also consider whether you can drive a manual in the UK - most cars are manual. They also use less petrol and are significantly cheaper to rent.

  • Also check out autoeurope.com.au.

  • I would suggest you book with the major companies such as Avis, Alamo/National, Hertz, Sixt and Enterprise, all of whom have locations very close to (but not in) the airport.

If you check their website, you will find pay now price would be much cheaper than pay at the airport.
