Drinking this whisky is like drinking the smokey tears of retreating English soldiers while you march on-wards to victory, bare chested and sword in hand as the bagpipers play Scotland The Brave.

I was just going to say "…like licking an ashtray". Nowhere near as poetic.

    • Have you ever been Bare chested in Scotland in January? Not even Lagavulin can save you from the Scottish weather (and I'm a Scot)!

        Not a real scot then…………….

        ;)

  • Nicks has had it on sale for a while at this price https://www.nicks.com.au/lagavulin-16-year-old-single-malt-s… but my local Dan's wouldn't price match so thanks!

    • I have been very disappointed with the packaging from Nicks.

  • Very tempting!

  • The Amex price is good, otherwise you should be aiming for $80.

For example, First Choice has price matched, so get yourself a $10 off voucher = $80

    • How do I get myself a voucher?

      • If you sign up to the website with any email address they will send you one. There should be some floating around on Oz B from previous deals as well.

  • Cash back is not gaurranteed therefore you cant put it into your calculation.

  • Quote from comments on dan murphys;
"This would have to be one of the best readily available single malts, if not the best. A true product of Islay, a beautiful golden honey colour is the first thing enjoyed by the eyes. The nose then is assailed by the most glorious aromas - peat, iodine, sea-spray, malt and honey are just some of the fragrances in this very complex nose. Then finally the tongue enjoys a fine balance of Islay peatiness, malt sweetness and medicinal aftertaste that blends into contentment and dreams of the good things in life, of which this is most assuredly one"
Daaaaammmmnnn… I don't drink whisky but I sure do feel like one now

As we all know taste is a personal thing, some will like it and some will think it's average. This is definitely not "the best" for me, but I'm sure it'll hit the spot for someone else. Regardless I have enjoyed every drop of Lagavulin I've had so it's not a bad drop at all.

Decent scotch is too dear in oz :(

      • Just curious… but what is in your opinion the best for you?

        • +1

That is a hard question to answer. The best I have ever had was Port Ellen 32yo that cost ~$20 for a 2ml tasting roughly 10 years ago, last I checked the last few bottles were going for around $3k or so. Awesome, but very expensive. As for a go-to scotch I would go Islay, I love the peat and smoke. I have not sampled any recent vintages but usually anything 10+ is quite safe and affordable. If I had to go and buy a bottle today (without looking at prices) I would grab a Talisker as I found it great value for the money.

My second favourite was Ardbeg Supernova (bottled 2004 maybe) but in the end it all depends on the vintage, so I suppose the wine snobs have a point there I guess, as the next year it wasn't as good. The first one felt like having a bonfire in your mouth with crazy flavours exploding around the place as a mate put it, but it was absolutely awesome and only cost around ~$80-100 a bottle.

It's up to personal preferences, but if you are looking for a scotch experience I would leave the blended stuff on the shelf, regardless of what label they bear.

        • @decr:

        • @phixxy: Thanks phixxy. I will!

    • For most of us it would just taste like alcohol. I have been drinking whisky for a year now on and off, and no way could I taste any of that, would just taste strong as all hell.

      • Add a teaspoon of water to help bring out the flavours.

      • before I try a new whisky, I read about it first… some people may have more sensitve taste than the other and they may get more form a whisky.

  • A great drop and worth every penny at that price! Pity I blew all my Amex deals on $50 ecards from Dan's…….

I wouldn't even let my servants drink this rot. I only drink Compass Box Hedonism Quindecimus .

  • Has been on the wanted list for a while, good time to try

Title should be $79.95 with AmEx cash back. The mod's edit has confused the situation.

  • Thanks mate. Bought with cash rewards and Amex credit on voucher. Good timing as my current bottle is severely depleted.
