For the Sydney & Melbourne links, simply filter on the left hand side "OneWorld" only to get the Cathay Pacific prices.

WHEN: Dates from February all the way through to November.

Super cheap, $1017 return at the dates I'm looking at… during peak season also… nice find OP!

Also $866 with China Southern Airlines… not sure whether i would fly with them..

    • +2

Yeah saw the China Southern on there, however everyone seems to dislike them so didn't think worth posting!

      • +1

Definitely worth posting. There's enough people who don't care too much which airline they fly with.

China Southern is safe, not to worry. All Chinese use it to fly to China anyways.

      • China Southern aren't great, but if you have to go via China anyway (Hong Kong vs Guangzhou, virtually the same for a stopover, i.e. no real detour, except for a better airline and airport), it might be worth saving the $100 if you are travelling on a very tight budget.

I flew six flights with China Southern last Sep/Oct, between Shanghai, New York, Osaka and Sydney. The food was actually delicious coming from Sydney, New York and Osaka - but the food on the legs after stopping in Shanghai were laughably worse! The passengers are more Chinese on Southern - stereotypically inconsiderate, noisy, older people get what they want all the time (not trying to be racist, just my experience) - Cathay would have a slightly more sophisticated clientele (except for the Aussie bogans who can be much worse than any Chinese passenger).

For mine, I'd pay the extra $100 all considered, but it's good that both options are available. Thanks for posting!

I flew with them in peak season last year. Flew into paris and out of Amsterdam. To be honest service wasnt that bad. Leg room was surprisingly good like really good for economy. The entertainment system was fairly comprehensive with a good selection of movies. Food was pretty horid. They transit through Guangzhou which is not a bad airport, but is a bit down on food options. Overall was quiet satisfied with the service considering the price. I paid 1.1k having booked 2 weeks prior to leaving in late July.

Do you need to check in again in Guangzho airport or can just international transit because I heard immigration in China is terrible and long Q ?

        • I didn't need to check in again, but you have to pass through a different set of transit gates where they take a copy of your passport and take a photo or something. No stamps. I can see the potential for long queues give the relatively low amount of counters at the gate, but my experience was pretty cruisy. Was in the terminal within 10 minutes. of lining up

Cheaper than the reverse for once! Books into N Class though, which means no Qantas Frequent Flyer Points.

BTW Zurich is also available (including turning this into an open-jaw (OZ-ams/zrh-OZ). Also, my favourite, multi-day stopover in Hong Kong for $20-40 more.

London is a little bit more but also available for open jaw.

Found $1227 on the Cathay website for:
      SYD - AMS 30/11
      LHR - HKG 21/12
      HKG - SYD 1/1

Which is brilliant for peak season

      • +3

There's a ton of departure taxes on LHR - you want SYD-LHR then AMS-SYD. Should save you ~$150.

        • Nice idea. Switched LHR and AMS and got $1,112.54

    • Any way to know which other cities have this sort of pricing, without manually trying each one?

    • Is it possible to upgrade any of these flights with QFF points?

  • How is cathay rated? Saftey and service wise?

  • +3

Take a plane to get high

  • +1

Thanks! Followed link and found flight with KLM that was just as competitive for ~$1000 return July/August!

    • +1

Would definitely pick Cathay over KLM though.

  • I seriously can't believe you can get to Europe return in peak season for around $1K!

  • Wow, these prices are super tempting, now to convince the Mrs.

    • Book first, convince later. Worst case scenario you head to Amsterdam with mate instead.

      • and pay for change of name?

  • it's still coming up as $2400 during peak season for me (June - July, departing Sydney)

    • The cheap fares have almost been sold, not many dates left sorry…Still dates available however.

      Cheers
