Yes, you will need to download the software, but it should work on XP as well as Vista, according to the specs page.

Well I won't completely write them off yet but when something is too good to be true, it often is — even if it appears on OzBargain :)
The songs aren't "totally free":
"Qtrax’s free version will allow consumers to download songs in the .mpq format and play them for five times while offering them a click-to-buy option."
There is actually no deal with the major labels and Qtrax.

Not available for Mac - and my new T2 drive
Looks like you'll need to use the Qtrax software to play the music (which has advertising) and you may need Windows Vista from a brief look at the specs.
It will be interesting.
