Do You "Keep The NBN Connection Box Plugged Directly in to The Mains Power at All Times & Turned on"?

It's against my religion to leave something turned on all the time but I suppose there is a good reason for that directive from NBN. Switches or something isn't it? And what's the deal about being plugged directly in to the mains? What's wrong with plugging the connection box and the router in to a surge protector?

  • Well you need power to power the router. Without power, the router won't work. You can connect them to a power board but without power you won't have internet.

  • According to NBN's User Guide

Can I plug the power supply into a power board?
Yes, however nbn prefers the nbn™ connection box and power supply is
connected to fixed power point where possible. However in the event this is not
possible then the power supply can be plugged into a double adapter, extension
cord or power board as long as they are safe

They prefer that you don't use a power board as many people will overload or daisy chain their power boards.

As for turning off the NBN NTD to save power overnight? That is fine, but do you have an NBN backup battery installed? If you do that's going to kick in and will defeat the purpose.

No Power = no internet and no landline phone (if you have one)

Do you leave your fridge turned on all the time?

A friend grew up on a dairy farm.
Farmers are noted for their frugality, but his neighbour took the cake.
Each night he would take the battery out of the kitchen clock at bedtime, and re-insert it the next morning to save the wasted power of showing the time while they were all asleep.

This would work best if they sleep for exactly 12 hours, then no need to reset the clocks.

    • There is a reason to leave a fridge on 24/7.

      • Oh I get it, your religion forbids you to do something unless you have a reason to do it. A bit like in the bible where it says don't kill unless they commit a sin then stone them to death.

  • I have my NTD box plugged into a powerboard no problem.

you may want to contact NBN to see if it's not hurting the ntd box in any way by continuous turning it on and off daily? idk how often you would need to do it.

but as already stated you most likely have a backup battery installed like i do which kicks in the moment of powerloss.

  • 1 There is no battery in my NBN connection box

2 I don't own the connection box or the antenna, NBN does, so even on the best case scenario- leaving it and the antenna on 24/7 extends their life- I'm paying for electricity to save NBN money

3 Worst case scenario- leaving it on 24/7 doesn't extend product life- and I am yet to be convinced that it does.

    • I can't see it making much difference either way. The amount of power used in standby is minuscule.

It will take a few minutes each day to reconnect after you turn it on. If you want to turn it on and off again every day, knock yourself out. Use an automatic timer to remove the inconvenience, if you can bear the thought of paying for running the timer 24/7.
