Dell XPS 9550 ($1600) OR Dell XPS 9650 Kabylake ($2750)

Hi Ozbargainers,

Looking to purchase a laptop as I recently sold my MB 12 inch.

I have a choice between obtaining:
Background: Was going to purchase Lenovo Yoga 910/however after reading that the fans get loud, cant deal.

Last gen Dell XPS 15 9550 Skylake with 512gb 16gb ram - $1600

New 7th Gen XPS 15 9560 Kabylake with 512gb 16gb ram. - $2759

(was worried about heating up and fan noise due to vent placements but need a laptop now)

So I guess it's a toss between, buying the newest gen unit with latest and greatest or saving $1160.

What would you guys do ?

Looking forward to your opinions!

You really need to ask? Get the cheaper one….

  • I was about to buy the 9550 a month back, but then saw rumours about the 9650 being announced at CES so I waited.

Not sure if it's of importance to you, but later batches of the 9650 are going to ship with a fingerprint reader for Windows Hello. Current ones will not.

Kaby Lake is a marginal increase in performance I believe, but the graphics card is a big jump, so if you need the stronger graphics, go the 9650.

I need more of a ram boost than GFX, due to running multiple tabs frequently.

How come they're shipping the fingerprint variants later? And do you know roughly when ? I mean ultimately the fingerprint is for security and ease, but not deadbeat important.

      (Thanks)

      • A few people on Reddit spoke to Dell about it and apparently it wasn't ready to be shipped with first batch. As when it first leaked out, Dell listed a fingerprint reader but was gone when officially released.

Few people have said a month or two, but may not happen, we really don't know

  • I'm about to buy the new XPS model that you quoted. The Dell online guy stated that they could do it for $2699 - anyone know a way to get a better price? Their ebay team confirmed that they would not be putting it on eBay for some time.

Is the $1600 quote for the previous model a refurb?

    • for $2699 is that for the same specs as listed- for the new gen?

The 1600 that I was given was from a guy who's selling due to wanting a Surfacebook, apparently purchased June 2016.

Yep - just get on an online chat and ask them for their best price. The guy swore to me that was their best price. I tried to get another guy to quote me, but then the original guy hijacked the chat and seemed angry that I went behind his back.

  • The 2759 was from Dell online chat and i had asked for an ultimate, of which she said that it was….

    • Hi,
I am planning to buy the new XPS 9650 by next month as the original Laptop/wacom studio pro 15 I was planning to buy seems to have a lot of issues.

Just wondering how you asked to get a discount on the chat? I was happy to buy it for original $3099 but if I can get it cheaper that would be great!

I would go for this and max out the ram to 64 as I would do a lot of graphics, retouching and video editing.
      Thanks!

  • Ultimately, I think it comes down to this. Is the 9650 better than the 9550? Without a doubt. Is it $1160 better? No chance. If the difference was around $500, I might bite the bullet, but at $1160, I'd get the older one.

  • Where is it for $1600?

    • A guy listed on eBay.

      • So you're also comparing new vs used?

Got excited for a little bit there.

        • Yes but the 9550 listed as not having been used much.

        • If you're going to get a second hand one, i'd wait until there is a decent refurb model on the Dell outlet. I think they come down to about $1800 with warranty etc. $1600 is a lot to pay based on some guy's claim that it hasn't been used much.

        • @unit0000: there's one 9550 i7/QHD/512gb/16gb up right now on dell refurbs for $1899.

  • If anyone has used dell or even an xps can you share your experience? Quality, performance, support

    Cheers
