Have I Completely Screwed up? Amp/headphone combo question

Hi Ozbargain

I am seeking some assistance to see if I have completely stuffed up

Just received an SMSL- SA60 amp hoping for it to function as an output for two things 1. Pair of low powered bookshelf speakers for a computer set up along with an secondary output with a pair of 2. Beyerdynamics DT-770s - 80 ohms.

Upon arrival I have set up the wires as seen in the imgur link and to my dismay there is no output from the headphone jack when i insert it into the INPUT 1 3.5mm jack on the front.

I shuffled cables around, played with all the "playback settings," in windows audio and nothing comes out.

I haven't yet tested them with some bookshelf speakers yet as I haven't yet decided which ones im getting.

So my questions are

Is the reason there is no sound coming out of the headphones is because the front jack is an INPUT jack which means that's where a source is meant to be plugged in not headphones?

Have I incorrectly plugged something in the wrong way? —> see pictures

Do i need to shuffle/play with the windows settings further to get an output?

If at the end of the day i stuffed up … are there any budget options for an amp that powers both bookshelf speakers and headphones in one combo unit? (ive seen ones like the Topping - TP30)

Thank you so much Cheers!

Yes, the input looks like it should be going in the input 1
I'm not sure what the red and white RCA plugs are for/going to?
Plug the headphones directly into the PC to check that it's outputting sound.

Not trying to be a wowser dude, and I know you're understandably stressed, but maybe fix those cuss words before they become the focus, rather than the actual question…just a heads-up! ;)

No worries, it was just a friendly reminder…a lot of these guys can be dogmatic asshats with stuff like that…you're lucky the usual pitchfork squad seemed to be sleeping in… ;)

  • "to my dismay there is no output from the headphone jack when i insert it into the INPUT 1 3.5mm jack on the front."

You plugged an output device into INPUT and wondered why you have no OUTPUT? - Or am I reading that wrong.

To explain roughly - the output from your sound should go into the input of your amplifier then the output goes to your speakers and headphones….

I might be misunderstanding something but it does look like you've got it round the wrong way

Anyone else able to unravel it??

EDIT: Speakers go to the terminals - get an RCA adapter for your headphones from JayCar and you should be fine

      There's 3.5mm Input 1 and RCA Input 2.
      There's no Headphone output…

The amp has no headphone output…

Best bet would be to get a 3.5mm y adapter and maybe a 3.5mm extension cable so you can plug the headphones directly in to the computer and keep the amp to power some speakers.

    • He can also plug the DT-770 into the front headphones out on the PC and skip the Y-adapter, although the rear audio output will be better quality than the front.

  • Have you selected the front input? Watch this from 2:58 to 4:04.

    • im afraid what he inserts into the front is a source as opposed to headphones :'(

      • Oh I see. You haven't bought speakers yet and you are trying to listen to the amp with a pair of headphones. Sorry, this amp accepts 2 inputs and can only output to speakers. Source -> Amp -> Headphones is not possible. So yes, it looks like you half screwed up.

  • Get an ODAC + O2 amp for headphones, connect this to the passthrough for speakers.
