Free Climate Change course from Prof. Tim Lenton and Dr Damien Mansell from the University of Exeter

About the Course:

The course is aimed at the level of students entering university, and seeks to provide an inter-disciplinary introduction to what is a broad field. It engages a number of experts from the University of Exeter and a number of partner organisations.

The course will set contemporary human-caused climate change within the context of past nature climate variability. Then it will take a risk communication approach, balancing the ‘bad news’ about climate change impacts on natural and human systems with the ‘good news’ about potential solutions. These solutions can help avoid the most dangerous climate changes and increase the resilience of societies and ecosystems to those climate changes that cannot be avoided.

Description

We are Professor Tim Lenton and Dr Damien Mansell from the University of Exeter and today we're joined by a few of our student facilitators to answer your questions about Climate Change. We've designed a free online course, 'Climate Change: Challenges and Solutions' to show you some of the science behind Climate Change, present the challenges and identify potential solutions to these global problems. Today we want to open this up to r/askscience, so please ask us anything about Climate Change!

Professor Tim Lenton is actively researching tipping points in the Earth system, especially the Climate system, and identifying early warning signs for them. He is also studying the revolutionary transformations of the Earth System, including the co-evolution of life and the planet. Dr Damien Mansell's principal research interests include the calving processes of tidewater-terminating glaciers, glacier surges, cryosphere instabilities and remote sensing for glaciological applications. His teaching specialises in GIS and remote sensing techniques and understanding the cryosphere.

    Who cares? Why the frick are you advertising your garbage on OzBargain? The bullcrap CC scare campaign costs Australians money, not saves - so OzBargain is hardly the place to run your adverts.

      Climate change may be less than predicted. But equally it may occur more quickly than the present computer models suggest. Should this happen it would be doubly disastrous were we to shirk the challenge now. I see the adoption of these policies as a sort of premium on insurance against fire, flood or other disaster. It may be cheaper or more cost-effective to take action now than to wait and find we have to pay much more later.

      Recently there has been posts about people having accidents whilst uninsured. Quite rightly, the folly of this has been pointed out.

      Insurance does cost money, but it is an essential risk management tool.

      The "bullcrap" quote comes from Margaret Thatcher November 6 1990.

        Who cares?

        Burying your head in the sand won't make it go away.

          Won't make it true either

          @Test Tickles:
          Thousands of people much more intelligent than yourself have done primary research into this and say otherwise, but yea, lets just keep ignoring the problem to save a couple of dollars on the power bill.

          @canyoudoitcheaper:
          And an equal amount of more intelligent people than you say the opposite, so we are at a stalemate. and the supporters kinda make the argument to suit themselves. Look at professor (sic) Tim Flannery and his 'absolute science' that it would never rain again in Brisbane, which flooded a year later, and how the rain that would fall in the sydney catchment wouldn't be long enough to penetrate the ground. So off we go and build a water recycling plant, and guess what, it has never been used and sydney dam has overflowed multiple times since. So yeah, I will ignore the "problem" which is man made climate change propaganda. Thanks.
