Cancelling AmEx Platinum Edge Card - affects booked flight?

HI,

I have booked my free domestic flight which will be in October, however I'm looking to cancel my AmEx Platinum Edge card as soon as I can. Does anyone know or have experience in cancelling their card before their flight, and the flight being unaffected from the card cancellation?

My anniversary date is in September, so I can't wait until after the flight, as I would then have to pay another annual fee.

I would hate it if I cancelled the card and then in return, they cancelled my booking.

Thanks in advance!

As long as you have Virgin Booking reference, you will have no problems.
It would be interesting if you could just cycle through the card. Apply for it, pay the annual fee, redeem the free flight, cancel card, apply for new card.
Obviously now they have cancelled the card it is irrelevant but maybe for the ANZ Adventures Card.

    • free flight only after hold credit card longer than 12 months is what I have read in PDS.

      • For platinum edge or ANZ?

        • platunum edge. was thinking of doing a runner before anniversary.

        • @eatwell365: But you don't have to wait 12 months before being able to redeem free flight?

        • @kiribatian: the T&C says so: have you tried?

@kiribatian: I've actually booked a flight a few weeks after I got my card but I made sure I at least used the card before i booked the flight. Had no problems. This was 1.5 years ago though. Don't know if it's changed.

        • @eatwell365: doesn't that defeat the purpose of the annual fee? You pay $149 as an annual fee. One of the benefits is to get that complimentary flight. You don't need to sign up for another year and pay another $149 necessarily

        • @kiribatian: first year annual card fee is free.

        • @eatwell365: Amex platinum edge has very rarely had offers for no annual fee and when it has been you can still get complimentary flight in that first year. Don't have to wait until the 2nd year

  • Maybe ring them and ask? or read the T & C?

    • Thanks. I did read the terms and conditions but didn't find anything (unless I missed it).

I've cancelled a couple of other AMEX cards including the Velocity Platinum, and can confirm that cancellation of the card definitely won't affect the flight if it has been booked. Also, you are able to access the flight as soon as your annual fee has posted (towards the end of the first month - certainly not at the end of the first 12 months). It actually comes up as a line item in your statement when credited.

    • Just wondering can you cancel the Amex platinum edge just a day before annual fee charged?
