Street parking when away for holiday

Hi guys,

I have a 4-weeks holiday coming up. Just wondering if it is legal to park my car outside of my buidling for the period of over 4 weeks? There is no time restricted in my area.
Alternatively, do you guys know where I can park securely with a good rate; somewhere near to public transport and in inner west.

Thanks so much.

Edited: Thanks so much for all your replies. I'm ended up parking at my friend's house.

    Phone your local council.

  • There's a risk it may be declared abandoned if it looks that way (e.g. leaves and dust on it) and a yellow notice put on it.

I don't think there is anything the Rangers can do about it if it is registered, roadworthy and not reported stolen etc.

  • You'd be fine for that period of time given that there are no parking restrictions. If you want cheap parking go with 'carhood' but they'll rent the car out whilst you're gone.. but you'll get paid.. I believe that they'll actually pay you $250 at minimum and that way you'll get to park at the airport (I could be wrong..) its also fully insured and it'll be cleaned if its rented out. https://www.carhood.com.au/

But I can obviously understand if you don't want your car rented out.. but I mean, if you're going to pay more than $100 in parking, you'll be $350 better off by renting it out and im sure you wouldnt get $350 worth of damage to the vehicle and its fully insured anyway. It really depends on what vehicle you own..

      Hey Rambutann,

I used to recommend carhood too, but after I left my car with them the last time, I regretted the experience. I keep my car very well maintained, but after the rental, I found numberous scratches, 1 big one and a dent. Its been 4 months since my rental was over but the claims department refuses to reply to my emails or return my calls. They also broke the lid of the central console and claimed it was fair use wear and tear. Payment only happened after 2 months and after dozens of follow ups. I also had road toll bills to my name even though they say they'll take care of it. Had to chase up the the toll company, whoain the end advised I needed to get paid from carhood. Finally the accounts dept agreed to pay the tolls. Also to note - they have a 200km mileage permitted a day - this means your car could have done 6000 kms in the 30 days.

I firmly dont recommend Carhood any more. It is more of a hassle than the means to earn. Your car will almost certainly be in a worse condition than you left it. The concept of car sharing works on paper, but in reality, theres always one party who feels taken advantage of. I regret the whole experience.

I wouldn't do it. Too open to being damaged in a hit and run or broken into, or declared abandoned.

    • with that said nubzy you might as well never park your car anywhere other than under a 24 hour camera lol

      1. risk of hit and run when parked anywhere to be honest
      2. broken into only if the neighbourhood is the ghetto and you are near junkies / housing commision + how attractive the car is, if its insured it may be more of a blessing to have it destroyed but if its a $80000 BMW or Mercedes, I would think 4 weeks parking would be "affordable" with the numerous deals available

It costs me 90 per week to leave my car in the brisbane airport parking lot, not too bad considering but remembering, there is a risk of break in / theft and hit and run anywhere you park imho, the only thing you do get is peace of mind that your car will be now towed away or damaged in a hail storm / weather event (depending on the parking area of course)

        $80000 BMW or Mercedes

Oh gee, and here I thought these were high yield investments.

        • it was an example

      • I live in a good area, and about once a year we have people who come through in the middle of the night and smash the windows of any car parked in the street and take whatever valuables they can find. I don't park my car in the street for that reason, except during the day. I don't keep valuables in there anyway, but i'd rather not deal with the hassle of replacing the windows/repairing damage.

    • can't be declared abandoned if it is registered!

  • Just leave it on the street
if its non restricted or free parking then you can park there as long as you want
provided the car is registered for the whole duration

Surely you'd have friends who can check up on it while you're gone

I strongly doubt it will be declared abandoned if its parked tidy on the street and someone checks it at least once a week

We have cars on our street parked for weeks on end, no one seems to care, if anything more of a target for crack head thieves more then anything
I would suggest you have comprehensive insurance on it (which you should have given the latest spate of posts here) and that someone at least checks up once a week

How active the street you are on?

This will dictate the road you want to go down
You also don't have a friend with a spare driveway slot or garage you could use for the duration

  • Park at long term car park at airport?

    • Sometime it is cheaper to take the car with you on the plane as excess luggage than park at airports

  • As long as your rego is current you will be fine. Damage to the car is another issue though

can happen anywhere chumlee, park it in the parking lot and some clown runs their bag over your bonnet, sits on your car or dints it trying to get into their own car, I book ahead where possibly and usually get valet parking for the same price as regular on special usually, really good service at BNE airport

A question: Will your comprehensive insurance cover the car if there is any damage if it is left unattended for an extended period of time? I don't think it will - make sure you read your PDS very carefully.

Another point: we left our car at Melbourne Airport Long Term parking for a month and returned home to find that somebody had crawled under the car and cut a section of the exhaust system out, in order to remove the catalytic converters. 24 hour CCTV didn't prevent this and apparently it happens often at that venue. Our solution has been to park in a commercial long term lot (undercover) - yes we do end up paying for it but it has been more secure/we have had no problems.

    • This I want to know about - Someone was that desperate for a car part they cut out your catalytic converter?
You must own one of those high yield investment cars?

      • They have platinum in them and can be sold for scrap.

      • yeah - it's a '98 Commodore!

Apparently stealing them for sale to scrap metal merchants for recovery of platinum and rhodium is a thing.

The culprit needed to crawl under the car with an angle grinder and make two cuts, and to make a getaway with the cut out section. CCTV (apparently monitored 24/7) didn't catch them.

We made it to a local exhaust centre (near the airport) to have it replaced. They told us that they regularly had to deal with the same issue - who knows - maybe they were in on it?!

Melb Airport Parking paid for the cost of the replacement, but asked that we not pursue it any further.

  • Worst case? Someone breaks in on the second day via a broken window and it sits in the rain for 3 1/2 weeks.

In this circumstance I would think of any neighbour, friend or work mate who might pass by and tell them what you are doing and ask them to text you if anything is amiss.
I don't think the risk is large, but the trouble could be magnified by the length of time until it is dealt with.

If an acquaintance mentioned this to me I would think nothing of helping.

  • I wouldn't do it,not safe at all. Ask you relatives or friends if you can leave your car at their places while you are away :)

  • If it isn't registered it can't be parked on the street.

  • Can you park it outside a friend's house?

  • +1

You can park it on my street and I'll watch it for you. Say $50 per week? I'll even drop and pick you up from the airport. 😁

    • his registration expires before he comes back, so can't leave it on the street

      • Council doesn't come round my place. So it'll be safe. Or…could always renew the rego? I'm assuming the vehicle will be used after the trip? I might be wrong, but don't regos cost more after they expire?

        • iirc there is a 3 month grace before having to get the blue slip, if you're unfortunate enough to have that green sticker on the windscreen i'm not sure of the implications

  • I am going away in May and have booked a car park space at the airport, 13 days for $128. I'm only doing this as I live far from the airport so it's cheaper than public transport or taxi's etc for 5 people. If I were you I would just park my car in the street.

  • Quite suprised at these answers in SA you are not allowed to leave a registered car on the side of the road for more than 24hrs unregistered not at all…Section 237 of the Local Government Act 1999 gives Councils power to remove vehicles left for at least 24 hours.
Section 53 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1959 makes it an offence to leave an unregistered vehicle on a public road. Only the SA Police can take action under this section

  • There is no problem with that as long as it doesn't run out of rego. Have a friend or neighbor keep an eye on it if you can. Off-street parking is obviously better if you can organize it.
