This is such old stock from 3-4 years ago that I would worry about the battery
Check out jb-hifi sale and probably get a D3300 or maybe a D3400 cheaper than this

    • Thanks for the feedback. I dont know much about cameras but thats a fair call..

if its two gens behind i'd want more than just 1/3 off

    • completely agree with you

The battery comes separately wrapped in the box IIRC and I bought a ~$10 spare that works perfectly if yours comes corroded.

That being said, the price here is nothing compared to when I got the same thing (black though) for $250 when Dick Smith shut down.

    • Did you bother to do any research before commenting? I suspect not:

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/nikon/nikon-d3400-24-…

No D3300's listed on their website.

Yep was just shooting mer sixguns in the air yelling 'yeehaw

It's good that the op took the time to post. This camera isn't really a bargain though, mainly because it is a few generations old and the discount is too small given the age.

As a side point, the DC3400 (the 2016 model) is considered worse than the DC3300 (the 2014 model) by Mr Nikon (Ken Rockwell). Had the op posted the DC3300 at the right price, people may have been interested. My point is that it's not always obvious what might appeal as a bargain, no matter how simple some people assume it is.

We should not discourage people from helping others, unless you're a fan of schadenfreude. Checking the age of a product and comparison prices is important though!

          @DeWalt:

Ken Rockwell is not exactly someone I would consider an expert. He often makes statements that are incorrect or exaggerated. His site can still be useful but I would not regard it as authoritative.

I would have thought any capacity lost while in storage for such a short time would be negligible. There has been no Charge/Discharge to be "wearing out" the elements. When you checked before posting this authoritative information, what were the actual values quoted on the Datasheet?

I bought my D3200 at around this price when it was the latest gen…this isn't a great deal

  • I see you. 🙋‍♂️

  • I'd give it a pass.

The latest kit lenses are superior to whats come before, but won't work on 3xxx version cameras prior to the D3300.

As a D7000 owner, I bought a D3400 simply to be able to utilise the new AF-P lenses, more specifically the 70 - 300mm VR.

The 18 - 55mm VR which I grabbed as well, also gets high praise from well known reviewers.

I think you'd be better off with the ability to use the AF-P 70 - 300mm VR as it sharper at the long end, faster focusing and lighter than the alternatives, not to mention
sells for a very competitive price.

Twice now Harvey Norman has retailed this great VR lens for $300 although you've just missed this by a couple of days.

  • Actually I'd pull the manger aside
Mentioning the age, the fact that the battery Is probably dead but you could buy a new one and ask them to price you a new battery, and also there's unlikely to be any ongoing online support since this came out 2012
Offer $200 as these camera's really haven't changed that much
The D3400 is $500 at jb and the D3300 has got to be less than what their asking for this older model
They are good, the base model Nikon's, apparently, great beginners cameras

    • Is there a known issue with Nikon batteries? Gets me over the 5D4 and makes me glad to be stuck with Canon where the batteries don't loose capacity in storage, but via charge cycles, like most others.

      • +1

There are no known issues with the Nikon batteries. I guess the worry that is being perpetuated relates to the the Li-Ion battery having discharged over time (valid) and remaining discharged (they should not be stored flat) therefore not holding their rated charge when recharged. If you were to store a new/sealed LP-E6 for 5yrs and it will probably be down on charge retention, just like a Nikon/Sony/Olympus/etc battery. But personally I dont think it is a drastic as it is being made out to be.

Ok so the battery is probably not completely had it.
I thought it was obvious, we're speaking in context of getting the price down. Batteries tend to loose capacity and or die over time, and you could use that as a negotiation tactic
Didn't realise the battery nerds would pounce on one tiny detail out of contex

        • @Beach Bum: Sorry, was only replying to Major Mess re Nikon battery issues (or lack of)

  • +1

    I got my D3400 for $344.

    • When and where? Its not same now for sure.

  • Actually, I'm about list my brand new (as in not taken out of the box brand new) NIKON D3300 Kit (black) with VR 18-55mm lens.

Bought from Harvey Norman with 1 year Nikon warranty left. Never got around to using it.

You can have it for the same price ($399) if anyone is interested. PM me. Pickup Melbourne (or extra postage).

  • Both big w stores I went to in perth have D3200 for $399, both where marked at full price but are $399. It's a good deal considering the D3400 doesn't have external mic input and D3200 & D3300 do.
