  • Is it women's because it's pink? :/

Came for this… I don't know how an inflatable mattress can be male / female use only…

      from the product description….

Our Ascent 25 womensFIT is a warm-weather sleeping mat designed especially for women. Our womensFIT comfort mapping construction strategically places more insulating foam in the core areas women need it most for warmth, support and comfort, with a more petite sizing that aligns with our womensFIT sleeping bags. Sleep comfortably – we have you covered.

So are they saying that non-petite women (in height and/or width) aren't womanly enough to have these misguidedly gendered mats?

        • +2

It is implied that they need to get the male version

          I don't think there is a 'male version' - it's just called a mat.

There are a few different mats designed for different users (including women) & purposes. I have used 3/4 length mats - to save on weight in my pack, & pad out under my legs with spare clothes. Not as great a need for insulation & comfort there.

    • Mats designed for women are usually shorter, narrower, designed for lighter body with weight & need for insulation distributed differently. Those changes result in a lighter mat - handy when carrying many days on long hikes, if it suits your body.

      • places more insulating foam in the core areas women need it most for warmth, support and comfort,

What are these areas where women need more insulation?

        • 🔞 if you have to ask, you're not old enough😀

Some research has shown differences in temperature of sleeping males & females. Weight, fat content & fat distribution differ on average by gender. Individuals may require a different style of mat to that recommended by manufacturers to suit their needs.

  • A few years back, took a normal (not this model) Kathmandu self inflating mat on trip up Japanese Alps. Tested mat before departure. I had told staff of my intended use & they recommended the mat. Bought the mat as was cheap on sale.

At 2500m the mat delaminated (cover layers became detatched from foam core after a few days use - making it like an inflated platic bag - impossible to sleep on). The 7 day trip hiking at 3000+m was cancelled. Was not a happy camper😠

Needed to bring mat back to Australia if I wanted a refund for the manufacturing fault. Kathmandu staff told me when I bought it - just bring it back if anything goes wrong - pretty useless when travelling.

There are better mats - just consider your needs more than price. Losing sleep is not worth the savings. But this mat will be suitable for some for light use. I upgraded to a quality Exped down filled mat which still is great to sleep on.

Of course the Chinese manufactuter & design would have changed, but Kathmandu's quality control probably hasn't changed that much. They rely on the customer to bring back their faulty merchandise😯

Lesson learned- don't cheap out on clearance crap for serious/heavy duty use, no matter what the 15 year old sales kid says.

Had bought it as a disposable item to use for a week or so - then give away all the camping gear to the mountain rescue. (They appreciated the rest.) The price was right.

I only travel with carry on luggage, so it returned to Oz instead of more interesting goodies. Expected it to last more than a few days😢

        • Don't worry mate, we've all been there- buyers remorse.
Japan's an awesome place to camp though right?!
Beautiful weather in summer outside the sticky humid cities.

          @damoo:

No buyer's remorse, more anger with Kathmandu for selling crap products.

In less expensive countries I buy most gear there for camping & then give away. (I travel light.) Now I at least take my own mat & sleeping bag for comfort!

Some wonderful spots. As you say - watch out for summer heat & humidity (Kyoto is bad for that).

I've slept on the beach & it got very cold in Autumn - in the morning the snow line was visible a few hundred metres up the surrounding mountains. Lucky the next night was with a rice farmer & his family I met hitchhiking on a previous journey.

By camping, I often pay for only half the nights accommodation on my many trips - in areas away from the cities.

Japanese love their gadgets & expensive brands (eg North Face), so equipment there is expensive.

Camping in a Camping-jo (camping site) is often expensive (asked $45/n for small, basic patch of grass plus $1 coin showers in 2008), so now I avoid. Have swapped English conversation teaching for site on a small island.

Camping in rural areas or beaches may be free, but best not to be too obvious as Police may be called. (Japanese worry about anyone doing anything out of the ordinary.) I camped on a beach & woke to 2 old men talking quietly outside my tent. They were just curious & invited me for coffee.

Have camped free or low cost in many areas from small islands in tropical Okinawa to mountains and rugged coastlines in other areas. There are some official free campsites in amazing locations - ask at Tourist Information Centres.

Found free site at most Soutern point of main island Honshu - overlooking the Pacific Ocean & populated by friendly fishermen. They laughed as I ate their freshly caught raw fish, & we partied well into the night on their cheap booze😯

Have been planning my next journey in April in the cherry blossom covered mountains around Fuji-san - so have been reminiscing.
