Not sure if this is a better buy than the $159 paperwhite, but $69 can't be too bad for a 7th gen kindle?

Has touch display, weighs 200g, but NO backlight.

PPI is 167, 4GB of storage.

Having had both, I think the paper white is worth the extra money.
Kindle is good, but adding backlight makes it so much better.

If you can afford the extra $90 then get the Paperwhite. If you can't scout EBay for 2nd hand or search the interwebs for a crazy import price.

Backlight was a game-changer for me as I can read while my wife sleeps, love it :)

    • Agree completely, I have had both too.

The Kindle Touch got me hooked and then the upgrade to the PaperWhite was more than worth the price of admission.

  • Don't make the mistake I made. Paperwhite is a must!

  • How do you know its 7th gen?

    • +1

Sticker on the back says 7th geb

  • This seems to be 3g and old generation.
    Personally i prefer no backlight.

    • -1

You know you can dim the backlight to no bscklight?

      • +1

You can turn it down but not off.

    • I also prefer no backlight. Higer DPI is good to have, though.

    • WiFi only and yes it is an old gen

    • To my eye, no blacklight version is clearer than the paperwhite version as well.

  • Yep if you can't afford a paperwhite a normal kindle is still nice to have, you can get plenty of free books which you can't do with the paper variety!

    • Can you side load your own ePub or mobi ?

      • +6

I think you can do epub using software called Calibre and converting to mobi. Then you transfer to Kindle via USB.

        • You can send mobi files direct to your kindle account, no hard wire if you prefer wireless.

        • @Frankcjc: How do you send them, via email?

        • @leTintin: I recall that Amazon provides me with an email address [my_chosen_name]@kindle.com for that purpose.

        • @saubao: Yep great little service. It'll download them onto your kindle whenever you have wifi coverage.

        • +1

Definately can use epub through Calibre.

Calibre is a must have for anyone with an ereader. Kindle or otherwise. I love it.

        • @leTintin: Every Amazon app/device has a SEND-TO-KINDLE email address, (check your settings), use your email to send to this address. Before that, don't forget to add your email address in "Approved Personal Document E-mail List" at amazon.com (Manage Your Content and Devices settings), otherwise your email will be treated as spam.

        • Surprised nobody mentioned you can send files from Calibre thru wifi. Just start a content server with Calibre then download with kindle's built in browser

How do you even buy this? I can't buy it and pick it up. Wow, big w website sucks.

  • No ePub support !? That kills it for me.
Like a music player that lacks MP3.

    • +3

Just use Calibre to manage your ebook library. It'll convert them quickly and easily into a compatible format for your kindle.
Much easy to manage everything on your kindle - especially if you're getting epubs.

Oh and some other great software to backup the kindle:
"Send to Kindle" plugin in chrome
"Epubpress" for converting web pages to epub. I used this for online webnovels i read. Then throw the resulting into Calibre and convert onto the kindle.
And finally you can email files/books to your kindle using your kindle email address. It'll download then whenever your kindle is connected to wifi - or if they are amazon books they will do so over 3g as well.

I'm still using an older kindle keyboard 3g. I absolutely love it. I've taken it around the world and the FREE 3g connection no matter where I am (internationally) has saved my bacon a few times. I've managed to use it to tether my laptop a few times to quickly get booking details etc (I don't abuse it though - amazon added a 300mg reasonable use clause coz people were hacking their kindles as free 3g modems).

I'm also still using a kindle keyboard, no 3g, 6 years old, still going!

  • This is the older model. Just went to officework and no luck with the price match.

  • How does one get a price match at office works

    • +2

      1) Go to Officeworks
      2) Ask for a price match (5% less actually)

You haven't been on OZBargain long, have you?

How does one get a price match at office works

      1. Collect evidence of cheaper price.
      2. Drive/walk/fly/hoverboard/submarine, etc to nearest OfficeWorks.
      3. Proceed to any counter or available staff member.
      4. Politely ask: "Excuse me. Would you be able to price match this item?"
      5. Show staff member your evidence. Evidence should agree with OW's published policy on price matching. Printed advertisements are great, some websites are good, a screen grab or recommendation from a mate of someone who occasionally logs into OzBargain may not quite cut mustard.
      6. Wait while staff member first denies any such policy. Then confers with more senior staff member. Then said more senior staff member points out some erroneous reason you cannot have the price match.
      7. Very politely, and with great patience, stick to your guns. Maybe say, "Perhaps we could talk to the store manager?"
      8. Wait for xxx minutes/hours while manager is retrieved from pub/home/holiday/deathbed.
      9. Repeat the entire process to manager, again, as politely as possible by now, and again showing evidence.
      10. Manager will grumpily concede, in a manner suggesting you are depriving his children of their education/orthodontic work/dialysis machine.
      11. Pay for item, and leave shop feeling like a criminal pervert.

xx. It is up to you how much saving the above process warrants. For some OzBargainers, any amount, even cents is justifiable. For others though, the saving would need to be more substantial to cover the time and ritual humiliation.
xy. Myself, I like to reward the original seller, who initially has the item at a good, fair price, and is not undercut by possibly-loss leading by a giant corporation.

Gaz1 and Roman Thanks for a detailed explanation. I am sure others reading would be benefited by this note. I liked the word Polite in your explanation very nicely written.

  • Out of stock online and the 4 stores I rang in WA have said they haven't had any stock of these in a long time.

  • Did anyone buy this in a store in Sydney?

  • Where can I get the paperwhite for $159?
The cheapest price I can find is $174 at officeworks!

    • +1

Regularly check the Officeworks website. Two weeks ago they were selling the Black Paperwhite for 159, the white one was still $174. Their usual price is 174. Sometimes you get a $20 off deal running at Officeworks and this also brings it down.

If you can import from the USA Amazon is running a deal right now on all Kindles.

      • Thanks for your help!
