At $199.20, I think this would be a great 5.1 option to upgrade from the rubbish TV Speakers. It's got 4K video passthrough and Bluetooth capability. Hopefully the deal helps a few out there looking for a budget sound bar.

    Thanks OP :). Just purchased one. Exactly what I wanted to improve the sound on the kids tv - and the lack of separate sub is a plus for our needs (didn't want the extra footprint in that room).

    It's not 5.1… it's barely even "stereo". No matter how many teenie weenie little speakers you jam inside, there is no point having the rear channels in front of you underneath the screen.

    I simply don't "get" the whole soundbar thing, they seem utterly pointless devices. Just buy a pair of decent speakers, people!

      They are compact and space saving. Don't need a big bulky stereo system hooked up to our tv like what we used in the 90s. Each setup has its merits.

        Compared to what? I consider soundbars to be large, ugly and intrusive.

        Don't need a big bulky stereo system hooked up to our tv like what we used in the 90s.

        I am not proposing a bulky stereo system. I am proposing a proper set of small self-powered speakers.

          M-Audios are usually pretty good (similar price). I have the original M-Audios AV40s which sound brilliant, these days I think they are up to AV42s:

          Think in AUS they can be had for around ~250..

          I also have the YAS-105 soundbar & the M-Audios definitely sound better / have nicer bass … but the soundbar is fine for a spare tv/gaming room etc.

          I comparison to a soundbar, there are absolutely tons of choices. Most of the below are only 2.0 so would have tighter but nt necessarily lower bass than this Yamaha.

          The M-Audio that chubby chicken mentioned are the speakers that have set the benchmark for the past few years.

          Firstly the Audioengine 2+ ($350-ish normal soundbar price) would be a huge step up.

          The cheap Swan M10's would beat this soundbar for sound quality, and are about half the price.

          Edifier R1700BT under $200 - the Creative GigaWorks T20 and T50 have a certain "look" about them but are a great sound.

          If you don't mind "dat Logitech flatness" then the Z623 is a THX Certified 200W RMS for about $150, and they have heaps of other cheaper models as well. To my ears all Logitech sounds horrid, I much prefer crispness and clarity - however absolutely tons of people love Logitech.

          As a tightarse, I've also hacked a few systems together that have worked great. My main office computer uses a Combo of the satellites from a ultra-cheap $15 2.1 system and a Teac subwoofer from a Flat Panel system. The speakers on my desk are about 100mm tall, and I have one tucked behind the outer corner of my dual monitors.

          It's 890 x 53 x 131mm - that's a massive piece of technology ugliness that you cannot "hide"!

      Around 9 years ago, I purchased my parents the Yamaha RXV1800 and KEF 3005.2 speakers for ~$3,000. My mum asked me the other day, can we please just get a soundbar so they could make their living room a bit more compact. Don't forget, the wires and everything that go with a proper 5.1 system for the rear speakers and a bigger entertaiment unit to fit an amplifier.

      I tested these in store around 3 weeks ago when it was marked at $298. Played Free by Pete Murray through bluetooth and was impressed by the quality and also how easy it connected to my bluetooth. At $100 cheaper now, it was a no-brainer for me to buy it for them.

      Soundbars serve a market. Probably not the market segment you're in, just like how I don't get how people spend more than $500 on a phone.

          I've never looked closely enough to see if a soundbar even has an arse… You're a little more observant than me… Maybe it's the HDMI port…

          More seriously, I've got a superb surround sound setup in the main room we use for movies and music. I have no intention of replicating that setup in another room where the kids hang for WiiU or Netflix etc.

          This is a cost effective plug'n'play solution to improve sound over television speakers. In a smallish room this will be perfect and, in that context, it reviews very well (better than the equivalent products in its class). At $200 it's a very good buy.

        You might be even more surprised how much better a proper set of tiny satellite speakers and a hidden subwoofer can do. It's not the size of the speakers that matters, but their placement.

        Visually, a soundbar is a LOT larger than it needs to be, plus it's sitting right there front centre in your line of vision. It's an ugly bolt-on that in my eyes looks like adding a rear spoiler to a Hyundai Excel. They are just ugly, and their is plenty of better sounding solutions that are smaller and less intrusive.

        Sonically, the problem with soundbars is that there is no channel separation. Most of the "bar" is used simply to get a bit of width between the left and right speakers, to try and at least get "stereo". Many (like this Yamaha) attempt to use sound processing to create a fake stereo width enhancement, and/or fake "3D Sound". These added sound processing rarely work as well as advertised, and they add distortion.

        If you want small and not noticeable, then a micro self-powered speaker system (better with a hidden sub) will be far more "invisible" plus will sound a lot better (especially for non-vocal video) at the same price point as a so-called "high-end" soundbar.

        Agreed. Won't suit everyone or every application, but it's a very capable unit and ridiculously good value at under $200!

        I installed one a couple of weeks ago to replace the existing cheap'n'cheerful Yamaha 5.1 system in my upstairs retro gaming room (see the before pic here https://www.instagram.com/p/BAIR78EB87O/). Of course, you certainly don't get the low-end response of a powered subwoofer or the spacial separation of five properly-placed speakers.

        BUT, it's a clean and compact installation and, for my use case in a rather small room, is more than adequate for the audio I'll throw at it. In the living room my needs are different and there I have a mix of VAF/Q-Acoustics speakers and a Klipsch sub, all being fed by a Denon AVR-X4300H. Horses for courses.

    got this. not bad. build quality kind of so-so but sound is great. better than TV speakers. and the best is no separate subwoofer.
    there are others with wireless subwoofer, but dont forget even the sub is wireless, you still need to connect it to power outlet means there is a cable. if you live in apartments get this one instead.

    damn got this 4 months ago for $200 with amex offer i thought i got that was the lowest possible price already!

    Question for anyone who has this. How would it go as a computer speaker? My screen is a 42", so its a decent size, I would rather get one of these than have speakers and a subwoofer under my desk. Just worried it might be a bit too wide and sound a bit funny when you are sitting 50cm away from it!

      Then buy a pair of 2.0 speakers and put them either side of the monitor.

      This soundbar is larger than a small set of PC speakers… plus it uses up the vital space directly in front of you where you can push your keyboard or place paper to read.

    Does this have the ability to learn your TV remotes volume control signals so you don't have to use a separate remote?

    EDIT: Found the answer in the manual FAQ section. It can be controlled with the TV remote through HDMI.

    This looks very interesting, does anyone know of an another decent priced deal from anywhere that has presence in Tas or delivers? Never bought from bing lee before. I looked at the usuals and it seems way too expensive from the couple of mobs that stock it. Thanks.

          Mine is being delivered, but there are a number of delivery location exclusions it seems.

          Tassie is on exclusion list… along with regional areas in most parts of Oz. Sorry mate. If you have a friend or family coming to visit soon - or vice versa - you could ship interstate. Or have someone on-ship it to you from Syd.

          @Beach Bum: ok time for another dumb question, do you actually get an option for shipping on either bing lee and/or their ebay store? Afaik they're both in-store pickup only unless they both do geolocation and adjust the page based on that, which I find quite unlikely.

          With auspost prices I think I'm better off trying to price match with someone in Hobart or someone who will match ebay prices and ship for a decent price like you said.

    The good thing about these units is that there is a "subwoofer" line out which you can hook up to a powered sub.

    I have a spare YSY SW030 which I'll hook up to this!
