i'd say exercise some caution with the K3300UW.

I purchased one from jb hifi couple of days ago looking forward to it like crazy after reading amazing reviews.

Got it home and set it up next to my samsung 1080p led, and the samsung just made it look like garbage.

Xbox one S recognize it as 4k, but nothing else, no upscaling for anything else like it claimed, it takes 32 seconds to turn on and 5 seconds to change the channel and the speakers sounded like tin.

Kept wondering what was going wrong as this got such steller reviews thought maybe tune it, but most of the options you'd think would be in the menu was not and a lot of others were greyed out.

Heard that for some reason, the french firmware fixed up a lot of issues, so donwloaded that and finally got it to install on the fifth go.

Instantly the picture quality improved like crazy, I was shocked at how much of a difference it made, it also enabled HDR which for some reason was disabled (it's not full HDR, but its some hdr atleast and makes a hell of a difference).

The french firmware turned it into another tv that left the australian firmware for dead, found out the k3300UW is a rebadged m3300, with crazy differences I can't work out why they stripped out a ton of features.

As much as it all sounds like happy ending, hisense have stated after promising an australian firmware that will fix all these issues, that now they are not going to, that wouldnt be so much of an issue given the french firmware fixes it up so much but once you do this, you can no longer set the TV to australia, only european countries, so not only do you lose the app store which pretty much allows all the smart tv features, you also lose time settings as it wont let you set the tv to utc+930 etc, so yes you can watch australian channels but all the time stamps are stuffed up and I cant find a way around it.

So yeah… I may be taking mine back as no reasonable person would buy a TV with half the features locked out and the picture quality looking like garbage, the speakers as well, I dont know why they would describe these as quality, my samsung LED has 1w speakers in it and they sound better and louder than these which sound like someone stuck a generic mp3 player into a toilet roll.

Even watching the news the sound distorts above 35 with the newsreaders voice hard to hear.

You must have only skimmed through that thread.

Firmware updates have been made available since late December to those who follow the procedure stated on Hisense website.

Hisense Customer Support provide all television firmwares and are required to verify your specific television before providing any firmware. Please contact Hisense Customer Support together with your product on 1800 447 367. Hisense Customer Support hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 7:30pm AEST and weekends from 9am to 5pm AEST.

Users in that WP thread have even shared links for all the different sizes so you can download the firmware without needing to contact Hisense.

There's a press release from ~4 weeks ago, though it doesn't go into any details other than mentioning Stan integration.

          @kamoi:

Maybe you should re read the first post.

With all the Australian firmwares : no hdr via hdmi only usb.

          Picture quality crap.

Aussie units at jb have the latest Aussie firmware on them and are demo run in store with usb hdr footage which works off usb and doesnt claim to be running in hdr.

You het home and watch stuff on it and watch the pictuee break up like crazy.

I don't need to. I've already read it once and I can tell you with 100% certainty that you are misinformed.

I have this TV in front of me running the latest Australian firmware with HDR working through HDMI. (HDMI Format in settings needs to be changed to Enhanced for it to work)

          Picture quality crap.

Looks great here using settings found on AVForums.

Aussie units at jb have the latest Aussie firmware on them and are demo run in store with usb hdr footage which works off usb and doesnt claim to be running in hdr.

Maybe you should go back and read your first post because now you are just contradicting yourself.

First you say that there won't be any updated Australian firmware and then somehow in the middle of the night you've just learned that apparently JB are actually running this updated Australian firmware in store.

        • -5

          @kamoi:

Why are you looking for a battle to defend it?

The model on display and picked uo from jb had the latest firmware as it wont update stating it has the latest.

No option to change hdmi to enhanced that option only shows up in euro firmware.

So thats either saying that either :
There is an issue with these refusing to update
There is an issue with them that is unspecified
A bit odd that whacking on the french firmware and all these settings show up and work.

So not really wanting to battle you which you seen to want took your word downloaded latest aussie firmware hoping it had been fixed up and can use epg again.

Picture quality has returned to crap and options have disappeared.

What a strange question. I think it's in every potential buyers best interest if misinformation is addressed.

The model on display and picked uo from jb had the latest firmware as it wont update stating it has the latest.

They aren't pushing updates through the System Update feature in Australia. As I mentioned before, to get firmware from Hisense you have to contact them. (Hisense Customer Support provide all television firmwares and are required to verify your specific television before providing any firmware.)

No option to change hdmi to enhanced that option only shows up in euro firmware.

Did you factory reset after updating?

          @typhoonadventure:

I really think you need to read the Whirlpool thread properly. I am one of the people that purchased this TV recently based on that thread and have contributed to the thread after the fact. As Kamoi has pointed out the TV does not auto update firmware in Australia. The Firmware it comes with is not usually the latest AU 1103 firmware. AU 1103 does enable HDR over hdmi. There are settings discussed to correct issues with the default picture. If people are looking for a TV they are not willing to adjust picture wise then this may not be the best TV for them, but if you are willing to tune the image its hard to get a better TV at this price with 3yr warranty.

Some settings for you to ponder after calibrating my 55M3300. These aren't done by eye as I attended the THX calibration course a few years ago and have my own equipment - however this is 1080 only as I don't do it for a living and don't have 4K kit but it's a lot better than the stock settings:
Picture Mode - cinema night (gives best gamma reading of 2.4for normal viewing - all other settings are too low particularly Standard which gives a reading of 2.03)
          Brightness - 50
          Contrast - 45
          Colour saturation 48
Backlight - dynamic backlight control off, backlight 40
          Tint 0
          Sharpness 0
          Adaptive contrast off
          Colour temp warm
Ultra smooth motion off (or low if you have judder on 4K material)
          Noise reduction off
          White balance:
          R offset 2
          G offset 0
          B offset 0
          R gain 5
          G gain 0
          B gain -4

10 point: assume all 0 unless mentioned
          10% Green 1
          20 red 1
          30 red 3, blue minus 2
          50 blue minus 2

Give them a try and let me know what you think. I haven't touched the CMS as I gave it a go and skin tones were very red so I reset them and they are now fine.
Using Cinem Night also reduces judder on 4K material by about half as well..:

Just confirming this firmware is for the 50" 3300? I'll put it on when I pick up the telly if so.

        • @harkoliar:

The M3300 is the European model number for the K3300.

        • @harkoliar:
The clue is in the filename…

          50K3300..

        • @Blu:

Yes firmware is for the 50K3300…
As per the filename.. Also I have found the TV is picky with flash drives.. I had a 16GB which refused to work no matter what I did..

        • @epazero:
          Cheers. Thanks!

        • +2

@harkoliar: I'm using nobbler's updated settings from September.

OK chummies - some post update calibration settings for you to try.
First up, I measured the black to white ratio at 8261:1 which is very good for a TV with this price tag…now the settings:
          Brightness - 48
          Contrast - 48
          Colour - 44
Backlight - Dynamic Control - OFF, Backlight 34
          Tint - G1
          Colour Temp - warm
          White Balance:
          R Offset -2
          G Offset -1
          B Offsett +6
          R Gain - -1
          G Gain - +4
          B Gain -10

As you can see, it is outputting far too much blue in the high range (whites) and I have had to take out as much as it lets me…this calibration was done with a far better sensor than my previous settings so these should be better…

and the adjustment he recommended a month later

However - knock brightness up to 50 and drop contrast to 45/6 whatever you find best.

        • @kamoi:

So, gave you the benefit of the doubt, went and chucked the so called new firmware on.

Instantly watched the quality go back to shite.

Interested to know, on yours when you click configure and go into picture mode what options do you get?

Out of the box from jb I got :
stadard, natural, theatre, pc / game, dynamic.

French firmware, you get HDR options there as well.

Go into xbox one s menu on the australian firmware now and it's back to saying we've got 4k but no HDR.

So yeah….. lets go back to the original question asked, howcome this thing functions better with french firmware?

        • +1

          @typhoonadventure:

Did you manage to find and enable this option since posting earlier? HDR won't work without it.

French firmware, you get HDR options there as well.
Go into xbox one s menu on the australian firmware now and it's back to saying we've got 4k but no HDR.

It's auto switching on the Australian firmware when HDR content is detected, provided that Enhanced HDMI Format is enabled.

So yeah….. lets go back to the original question asked, howcome this thing functions better with french firmware?

HDR is working just fine here with Australian firmware and looking at the comments on WP it's working for the folks there too. I haven't seen anyone else report this issue so I dare say it's caused by something you did (or didn't do).

Which firmware version did you download?

Which colour USB port did you use for the update?

Was it the correct one for your screen size?

Did you factory reset after the update? If yes, did you try flashing the same firmware a 2nd time?

        • -3

@kamoi: and so again your back to blaming me for something that shouldnt be an issue with a product. Intereeting.

Did everything correct. Same version you are claiming to use. Same picture settings, same hdmi options.

Can confirm no auto switching to hdr.

So to recap french firmware = more settings and hdr, better quality picture.

Australian firmware correct version everything dome how you specified only difference now is hdmi enhanced now avaliable which was not before.

Now again bash me all you want again but the point is being missed again, why should this be an issue on a product that can and has done everything on a foreign firmware since august in english…. yet on a unit that was manufactured in october (or atleast thats when it was packed) not do it ?

Which version? If you don't recall, look it up in Setup -> About -> System Info

What size screen? Was the firmware matched for this size?

Which colour USB port did you use for the update?

Did you factory reset after the update? If yes, did you try flashing the same firmware a 2nd time?

Australian firmware correct version everything dome how you specified only difference now is hdmi enhanced now avaliable which was not before.

Great. How did you get HDMI Format to appear?

Now again bash me all you want again

Bash you? Again? You can't be serious?

but the point is being missed again, why should this be an issue on a product that can and has done everything on a foreign firmware since august in english

As far as my unit is concerned there is no issue. Nobody on WP has reported any such issue either. Quite the opposite actually. Confirmations of HDR finally working with Australian firmware.

So why is it that you are the only one who can't get the update working?

        • @kamoi: maybe it's got to do with the numerous times you've put me down for being disappointed with the product and insisting i've done something wrong.

Anywho, I can see someone being blinded by love of a product and not understanding when someone is having a tough time with it.

Got two calls from hisense….. to make it more fun call #2 seemed to have no idea about call #1 and they both offered different stories and solutions.

Call 1 : kept insisting I take it back as the TV was capable of HDR and that it was definitely not doing it, they told me the australian tv's had been updated with a firmware in septermber that "should be on the tv already" which allows HDR, it just won't say it on the box, they told me that the one S should pick it up easy.

Told him i'd whacked the french firmware on it and everything worked fine, then put the latest aussie firmware on it and was getting some options but not all of it.

He then concluded there was an issue somehow with my TV and I should return it.

20m ago get call #2, who tried to tell me that my issues were occurring because the tv was not capable of HDR or of 4k via HDMI, at all.

Told the guy, that i'd whacked hte french firmware on there and I was getting everything working fine, he didnt think it was possible claiming it was an 8bit board and the ports were not capable of 4k, only playback of 4k was possible through usb.

After putting me on hold for a few minutes came back and confirmed to me that the ports were capable of 4k, 2 @ 30hz, the other 2 and 60hz, and that the 60hz ports were capable of "light" hdr but it would have to be enabled. I asked him how to enable it and was told it should be in a future update. Asked for an ETA and got told he had no idea and no one else there knew.

Then asked him if he knew about the earlier call and he said he had no record of it.

So yeah, thats where we are….. not going to be surprised if I get a third call with another story

        • @typhoonadventure:

maybe it's got to do with the numerous times you've put me down for being disappointed with the product and insisting i've done something wrong.

I'm sorry you've chosen to see it that way.

Anywho, I can see someone being blinded by love of a product and not understanding when someone is having a tough time with it.

Not understanding? I'm literally here trying to help you, asking relevant questions to help narrow down the issue, but at every opportunity you refuse to cooperate and instead throw accusations at me. Why are you trying so hard to turn this into something that it's not?

I've asked a series of questions twice now and both times you've ignored them. Do you actually want to get your unit working like the rest of us or do you just want to rant?

@typhoonadventure: Gawd. He's not putting you down, petal. You're the only one experiencing the issues you describe, therefore it's certainly human error on your part.

The man has afforded you a great deal of his time and his only motivation has been to assist you, even after your replies became belligerent. So instead of getting butt-hurt, extend him some thanks because few would persist in helping the ungrateful.

        • -1

@Chateau: And again we have the putdowns claiming its human error.

Third and fourth phone call with hisense tech (they've now got the departments to talk to each other), they've had similar issues with a "small number" of units.

Apparently the telltale signs are the TV's having issues updating with the firmware like I experienced earlier, apparently there are also other issues other people are having such as the unit becoming unresponsive to the remote.

Apparently if you have either firmware issues or remote issues you have an affected unit according to the guy they can either send a guy out to do an on site board swap or you can return it to place of purchase.

I might just swap it over for a samsung.

        • @typhoonadventure: Yet again you don't actually answer kamoi and tell him what firmware version you are using and actually attempt to rectify your issue.

        • -1

@pwnd: the firmware version recommended by him.

Have since called back jbhifi and asked them if they knew of the issues with it.

Confirmed they've had returns for similar issues with firmware locking out features, options resetting on their own etc, as well as remotes going unresponsive, offered a swap over or refund.
