Coles Vs. Woolies Whole Egg Mayonnaise Prices

My amazing discovery this week has been the HUGE difference between Coles & Woolies homebrand Whole Egg Mayonnaise! (I know, I need a life :/ - however, I am an OBer through and through so this IS an important finding)

Identical jars (probably made by same company - labels both say Made in Australia) and I reckon identical product.
Coles 445g - $2.85 everyday price
Woolworths 440g - $3.69 everyday price
An 84c difference in price! OBers have (almost) killed for less than that! What a rip-off Woolies!

What other things have you found with big price differences for the same products?

  • Recently, I shifted to drinking soy milk instead of cow's milk. Given there is a reasonable price difference between the brands, I looked at the ingredients label on the cartons. One brand particularly stood out as a rip off, which is the Sanitarium So Good range, only has 3.5% soy protein compared to other brands which is around 13% to 17%. I guess So Good is not so good for you?

    • May I ask your reason for changing to soy milk?

Wife started getting a lot of gas in the past few years. We went away on holiday and didn't touch milk for 3 weeks and it went away. So I guess she must have developed a little lactose intolerance in the past few years. We still wanted the calcium benefits of milk, so we switched to soy instead.

  • I'd like to compare the nutritional labels between the two Mayonnaisii

Perhaps one is more eggy than the other?

    • Coles - free range whole egg (5%) AND free range egg yolk
Woolies - free range whole egg (9%) and no extra yolk
      Who can tell??

  • Aldi

    • I looked for mayo at Aldi and couldn't find any :(

      • +1

it's located on the shelf above the frozen veg.

On a side note, have you tried Hellmans or Bestfoods mayo? Maybe double the the price but it's at least twice as good.

    • +3

Opinion only, obviously, but I think Hellmans (and Thomy) is pretty much on par with the generic whole egg mayos.
      I haven't tried Bestfoods.

      • Bestfoods and Hellmans are identical in taste. Bestfoods is the American version and Hellmans from the UK I believe.

        • They are identical products; only difference is labelling. There's even a wikipedia page on the subject. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellmann's_and_Best_Foods

My dear wife is fussy about her mayo. Insisted she could taste a difference between these two for years until I showed her the evidence. Now I just buy whichever one is cheaper. Winner!

    • I really find that these homebrand whole egg mayos are really yummy, so I wouldn't want to pay twice as much (I'm on a tite 'arse' budget :) )

      • I'll tell you the reason, when I moved from the UK, I missed mayonnaise, I couldnt get hold of Hellmans at the time so went through almost every alternative, and found every one of them to taste like Heinz Salad Cream, too vinegary. These days its much more easy to find a good mayo. Like I said, Hellmans and Bestfoods are the best IMO, closely folllowed by Heinz Mayo. All nice n creamy without a bitter aftertaste.

        • S&W is also one that's not vinegary at all.

We've switched to Aldi's one now though, though they're very different to each other. Aldi's is more like Praise, but we like it. And under$2 I think.

        • Checked in Aldi this afternoon, actually $2.59, made in Germany, 7% egg yolk.

  • Not only 84 cents more expensive, but 5 grams less as well.

  • different ingredients and % maybe. you need to check that too.

    • it seems that the ingredients are pretty much identical…although listed in different ways (as in the 'eggy' %)

  • +1

Try a variety of them and go with the one you like the taste of; none of these are going to drive you broke unless you have heaps of them. If you are having heaps then your next post will be on comparing health providers.

One egg, cup and a half of sunflower oil, 1/2 teaspoon of mustard powder. Dash of vinegar if you like it. Total ingredient cost, probably under $1.

I use a stick blender with whisk attachment, directly inserted into a re-used large S&W mayo jar. Takes less than 5 minutes to make and is nicer than most commercial products.

You can also tweak the flavour profile as you like. For example, add garlic powder to make garlic mayo.

    • thats great! thanks heaps peteru :)

No preservatives and you know what went into it. Score!
