    So Apple only?
    Any update on Android availability?

    • Hey 1stOzBarginer,

We are very devoted to getting our WineMinder service on the Google Play Store and into the hands of Android users. We are looking to have the app developed for Android sometime in April.

You can follow us on our Facebook page to keep up-to-date on when this will become available: http://www.facebook.com/wineminder

If you choose to buy a WineMinder now, it will be compatible with Android once it launches.

I hope that answers your question :) Please let me know if you have any further inquiries.

I assume that the subscription is necessary for the WineMinder to work? As in, once the subscription expires, the WineMinder unit does nothing?

    • Hey Ayanami,

Thank you for asking this question. Technically you are correct with that statement. All of the unique features to the WineMinder unit (lifespan prediction, wine moderation, wine database) are all connected to our subscription service.

The subscription service is currently valued at $10 a year, which is incredible value. We are constantly updating our database with new wines and updates to make sure that our customers have up to date information about their wines. Our reviews are sourced by highly educated Masters of Wine to make sure that you know more about the wine you drink.

We do give away at least one free year subscription to the WineMinder Database so that every customer can use our product when they receive it.

I hope that answers your question :) Please let me know if you have any further inquiries.

  • Looks like BS to me. If you want to find out when to drink your wine go to Cellartracker.com if your wine or something similar isn't on their database and your wine isn't expensive, drink it in the first year or two and definitely not much longer than that.

I currently use Cellartracker which is a very useful app, however it's drinking window recommendations are based on the wine stored in optimal conditions as far as I can understand it (which is why the other users feedback/ratings are so helpful sometimes!).
If I understand this product correctly (based on their website) it's aim is to give you a more targeted optimal drinking window for your wine based on the specific measured conditions of your "cellar". With the temperature variances for those of us without a climate controlled fridge/cellar/storage option, the optimal drinking window would vary as temperature is a dominate factor in the rate of change of the wine.
Perhaps the Rep can make some comments to clarify this as I am certainly no expert

      • Firstly, I doubt the average Cellartracker user has ideal storage conditions. It's probably a range of then.

Second, how does this service know your conditions and those of the paces your wine has been before.

Wine storage isn't a science and anyone claiming to be able to make predictions is a phoney or deluded.

OK, to be clear, I am not an expert nor do I have one of these devices/subscriptions (I use CellarTracker)

    But to address your points
    1) As I understand it the Cellartracker drinking window is a mathematical formula based on type of wine etc - the full details are accessible via the app but it seemed extremely complex - it seems that user reviews and rating don't impact this - however they are still really useful to me when making a decision (actual vs theoretical)
    2) I think that the device has a temperature gauge in it that monitors and tracks your "cellar conditions" - perhaps the Rep can clarify
Obviously there is no possible way to know what happened to the wine BEFORE you get it
    3) My opinion is that there is probably a fair bit of science around the maturity of wine - but naturally you're entitled to your opinion

    • Hi 1stOzBarginer,

I just wanted to clarify that the WineMinder does include a temperature sensor inside the device. This is how the app can determine the condition the wine is stored in. The module that is included in the package measures the temperature of the room and sends it back to the mobile app. With this information, we compare it against a tested algorithm to determine an accurate approximation of your wine's remaining lifespan.

I hope I was able to clarify that. Let me know if you have any further questions :)

      • Thanks for clarifying

How does the device/app account for bottles in the same location being kept slightly differently?
E.g. In the room I keep wine, there is a wine rack (open air), some in cupboards (some loose, some in boxes) and some still in the cardboard box it came in.
Does this type of information get entered into the app, is it accounted for or is it a measure of the room temperature only that is used?

        • Hi 1stOzBarginer,

At this current stage the WineMinder uses the temperature of its surroundings to calculate the wine's lifespan. This mean that factors such as different storage methods may/may not effect the predictions as its very difficult to take these factors individually into consideration.

We are working on using a more flexible system to help compensate for these changes in variables. However, at this stage the WineMinder will still provide accurate readings and deductions based on the temperature of the environment.

I hope I was able to help. Let me know if you have any further questions :)
