Where can I find this particular brand of MSG?

I live in Western suburbs in Olympic park area and I need to find some MSG for cooking.

It's called Ajinomoto MSG powder

Does anyone know which shops stock it? I've tried Coles and some korean stores but none stock it.

  • I've never seen MSG powder for sale myself, but would also love to know where to get some!

Almost all asian supermarkets sell it. It is about $3 for a small packet or tin.

      • Pretty much. The missus buys a bag maybe once every 5 years or so.

    Have you tried ebay?

  • Kinda curious why you need this, care to share some light?

For taste? Are you kinda curious why people need salt, pepper and spices also?

To be fair, there's always been negative, usually unfounded, claims made about the side effects MSG intake.

Here are a couple of good articles supporting MSG….

Let's be perfectly clear though, the stuff still isn't good for you, it's just not quite as bad as once thought.

The current thinking is that the usual subset of side effects often associated with MSG may not always necessarily be completely attributable to it in every person…period. That's as good as it gets.

          @StewBalls:
          So, like salt?

        • MSG gives me heart palpitations and a rash on my lips.

My wife also allergic, she vomits within 30 mins of having MSG.

It's annoying because MSG is in most chicken salts and I love chicken salt on my chippies :(

        • Every time I try to put food in my mouth that is tainted with Monosodium glutamate (MSG, also known as sodium glutamate) I gag. I can't breathe and usually can't get the food to my throat from the gagging reflex that it 'supposedly' causes. Friends used to accuse me of bunging it on, this was long before the MSG revelations of it being used as a food additive in (mostly) Chinese/Asian cuisine followed with the potential issues.

I am not one to adversely react to things than this one, guess I'm just lucky

      • For artificial taste?

Fixed. FWIW, most people use too much salt in their cooking for the same reason as well.

You'll find that once you ease up on the artificial flavour enhancers, you start to taste the actual food in your cooking.

Nothing artificial about it, it is one of the most abundant naturally occurring amino acids and can totally enhance a dish. Mum has been using it in her cooking all her life.

        • Your views may have changed. But I'll say that your comment here makes me feel you think MSG is a more "artificial taste" than salt, sugar, pepper, soya sauce and literally every seasoning and liquid (besides water) ever. I disagree

Or any Asian grocer (southeast asian would be your best bet, e.g., Thai, Filipino, etc)

If you are not fussy about brand, you can get generic MSG from Asian grocers. It's the same chemical compound.

Ajinomoto is the Japanese company that originally created monosodium glutamate.

Crown Asia supermarket on la trobe st sells this exact brand, I use the same one.

  • Asian Grocers - I get mine from Glen Waverley (Kings Way) but I'm sure there are plenty of other shops that stock that brand.

  • I've seen them in both Coles and Woolworths, but they're like twice as expensive compared to asian stores, lidcombe has a few asian shops, only a stone throw away from homebush

    • thanks I found them eventually at Miracle supermarket at eastwood

      • no worries :)

  • got mine from ebay
