  • Can't read the article, hit my 30 article limit for the month and can't afford/justify paying subscription.

  • from comments on smh i think people want our retail shops to open till late just like in asian countries.
but then staffs cost will be increase.
    hmm difficult.

I rather retail open 12-9 during the week. Who goes shopping retail at 9am anyway? Most people with the money are at work. This would also allow more youth to work the night shifts after school meaning cheaper salary.

      • Have you ever gone and had a look at who goes shopping in the morning?

I tend to notice a fairly consistent demographic and that's 'mothers'. Probably after dropping kids off at school.

      • out of topic but i really wish banks open till 9pm! gee they should serve customers but yet they open the same time like us, and having lunch time at the same time too.
        amazingly stupid.

        • I cant remember the last time I needed to go into a bank though?

        • @cypher67: maybe not yet but some need. the point is during lunch time they have less staffs, but office workers, (strangely) students and old people tend to come during this time.

        • @cypher67: Went to a branch this morning to deposit some foreign cheques which unfortunately cannot be done online. While I was there waiting (took 20+ minutes to process 4 cheques) there were constantly people rocking up to the counter to withdrawal/deposit cash.

      • You can thank our over protective labour laws, no business will want to commit suicide by paying all that evening shift penalty rates which add about 20% to wages.

How backwards are we as a society, where we still have Saturday or Sunday penalty rates. Is it to compensate those who had to miss church?

      • This is pretty much HK! None of the retail shops open as they close late. Seems the only place open before 9 were eateries

    • Australian consumers (especially in big cities) are crying out for this option. The reality is there are simply so many people who can't get to a retail outlet during "normal" (9 - 5) hours. As suggested below, having retail operate 12 - 9 would appear to be far more sensible. I would imagine that the number of people who be able to get to the shops from 5 - 9 would far outstrip those who are shopping 9 - 12. I would venture further to say that most who are shopping 9 - 12 would have no difficulty in shopping somewhere during the 12 - 9 period.

yes those 9-5 people are the ones working hard and earn most (think of fund managers, stock brokers, advisers, dentist, government officers, etc, so it is make sense to tailor the opening hours to suit those people (means open when they are free not when they are unable to shop)

is it really to understand? all the retail CEO, hello? did you get your degree completed? such an easy logic yet they failed to implement. AMAZING!

        • Im pretty sure there is more to it than that. Retail labour laws. Shopping centre opening hours. OH&S regulations etc.

  • I tried Rhodes and Beckett. Didn't like how they fit. They are also very expensive compared to something which TM Lewin which I like.

good. they didn't respond to competition and changing times so they deserve it. herringbone went to shit ages ago anyway as soon as they sold out

  • When the average Australian woman is a size 14 they decide to start the range at a size 4 and not do a size 16. Sorry to see any Australian business go under but if you spend more time listening to the fantasy of your "buyers" than the reality of your shoppers this is what happens. Everytime I walked into the stores during a sales the only sizes available were in the 4-6 range and this happened season after season. Maybe other Australian retailers might learn something from this.

  • They kept on designing good looking shirts instead of also catering for fits for all different shapes and of course no non irons.

That was fine until the other brands constantly changed pricing models and out priced them consistently

I think retail in Australia is just not competitive enough. The average price for a shirt RRP should be ~$60 and ~$40 on sale.

Come to think of it, the only retail brand that gets any attention outside of Australia is RM Williams.

    • What about Ugg?
