Just Moved Into My First House, Which ISP to Choose?

Hi All,

I've just moved into my first house and I've got to decide on which ISP to go with. I'll be streaming quite a bit and downloading the odd movie

I noticed that our house has an Opticomm box on the side which from my understanding is a privatised version of NBN? I'm struggling to find the best/reasonably priced option.

If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated!

    You are limited with Opticomm….

Exetel is usually the cheapest in this space, but you 'might' suffer congestion in peak hours. I would go with Internod or IInet personally.

Avoid Exetel, they are hopeless. Avoid Telstra as they they most expensive and also cannot keep the internet up for some reason.

      • I'm happy with Exetel. I pay $40 a month including line rental and it's fast and very reliable.

I'm very happy with Telstra. Most reliable generous data.

      • those two arent even an option to choise in an Opticom network.

        • Yeah I know. Are you part of the ooticom network?

        • @Kiz:
No, but if you go on their site it lists who you can choose. Most option people are giving arent available on the opticom network. (telstra optus etc)

  • Just off the topic. where about you moved? you built or bought already built ?

    • Keysborough in vic.allready established but only 18 months old

      • Not far from me. lol.. Not cheap houses over there now. Single stories around 600-700K

        • Yeah it's crazy. It's is a 2 bedtime townhouse for 500+

        • @Kiz: Don't even look at Cheltenham then. Prices increased by like 100k there over the past year. We got priced out into neighbouring suburbs

Telstra, I pay extra to have them cos they never have an outage

say what… Telstra.. no outage ?? You joking..

    • depends on where you are located. metro areas unlikely to have outage, but quite frequent in rural areas due to lack of maintenance.

    • I live on the Gold Coast and last year was a bad year for Telstra outages.

  • Been with a few and the best speed, service and reliability is by far Telstra (unfortunately).

If you can negotiate to the 50mbps package at the 25mbps rate, as well as a free top package modem (both doable if mobile customer), you'll make some of the money back and get a better service.

They have monopolised the market (especially ADSL/2/2+) to control the best service and charge for it. It's rubbish, but that's the game.

    • they are not available on Opticomms private network.

  • I've previously had services with Telstra, iPrimus and currently iiNet.

Telstra - Stable service, speed was quite good until congestion kicked in in my local area. Least competitive in terms of price and content offerings in their bundles.

iPrimus - Quality of the service was awful as was the customer service - 0/10

iiNet - Getting the service installed was a bit of a headache but the quality of the service has been really good, download speeds consistently above 2mb/s often touching 2.4 which is as high as you can go on ADSL2+.

  • We were with DCSI for our previous place which had a private FTTP connection (through RedTrain). DCSI is by far the best ISP I've ever dealt with. I've been with Telstra, TPG, Optus and Vivid, and DCSI had the best service and customer support by far. They have a local call centre in Warragul as well and were super quick in addressing issues.

    • Thanks for the heads up, they seem to be pretty good and flexible too. They have been shortlisted for my choices so far

  • IInet, they may not be the absolute cheapest, but they have excellent service, good prices and they stick up for the privacy of their users when sue-crazy corporations start demanding personal details from ISPs.
Plus they upgrade plans for free. You get an email now and then saying "your plan has automatically be upgraded" and suddenly you have another 100GB per month :)

  • Depending on your location, but you are limited to the ISP listed here. Most of them will have Exetel and iinet. Exetel is great for value for money, iinet is great for cust support and stable connection.

  • Try Optus.
    I used Optus for years.

    • Optus don't seem like an option for me with my current setup

  • From personal experience, (central Qld)
My Republic and Barefoot Telecom are both great.
We were with iinet for a few years also but changed to a better value plan elsewhere.
Iprimus had the best adsl plus phone bundle but they are hard to understand when you have a problem and you need to have the patience of a saint, Also, they do not like being told NO and they hound people something shocking.
Telstra is mostly just a rip off, and i didn't appreciate how they tried to trick and scare my old aunty into signing up for nbn connection recently. told her that if she didn't do it right now she would have no phone at all by the end of the year when all the old copper gets turned off.
( the point here is they tried to scare her into signing up for something right then and there.BIG NO NO in my book.)

  • Hi there, I am not new to this forum, but I have only just registered to let you know about this great website I used to choose my internet provider.

    [Broadband reviews Australia]

This website has reviews on so many internet providers in Australia and the reviews have true honest advice, which is especially helpful with the NBN transition happening all over the country.

I hope this website is helpful for you all. It was for me.

    Thanks
    Kirsty 🙂

    • sounds like an advert.

Do you list providers on the opticom network? most providers are not available and looking at your site it doesnt seem to let you know, it just lists all providers in Australia which doesn't help the OP.

      • I just checked and left a review, yes there are many other providers, however no one has left a review for them yet, so they are no showing on the site. I suppose once they become reviewed they will begin to show, You can go to this link, and then on the review page it shows a dropdown with heaps of Internet Service Providers to review Broadband Review List ISP List.
