Car Burning Too Much Oil

I drive a Nissan Pulsar 2005 1.8 L and for the last few months i have noticed that the car is consuming a lot of oil. On full tank i get on average 420KM which i am pretty sure is very low.

Any budding mechanics know what could possibly be the reason? I ran an OBD scan and it showed issue with the crankshaft scanner.

thanks for your help in advance!

  • Are oil and water mixing? Try changing the crankshaft sensor and seeing if there is any difference in your car?

At first, i thought you were talking about engine oil, after reading i guess you mean petrol?

I have the exact same car (Auto + Sedan), my one has done about 230,000km. I believe it relates to mileage as well. Actually there are other factors too.

So me inner city driving in Sydney in a conservative way, averaging 10L/100km, or i should say at least.

Some people say if you use E10, your car uses more petrol as well, maybe additional 10%?

How many litres petrol for 420km?

    • Google tells me 50L, so it sound a bit high. How many litres in a refill from 420km? Could be a faulty fuel gauge if its only taking 30L to refill.

      • Yep, it's a 50L tank but i am not sure if OP is able to fill exactly 50L, as least i haven't tried that.

Even i run it down close to empty tank, i can fill about 40L, maximum..

It is confusing. there is no oil tank, so I also guess you mean petrol.

As above how many litres in the tank, how much worse is your fuel economy? convert it to L/100km and let us know what it was and is now.

Where are you? Sydney has been copping a lot of heat, running the AC more often than usual might be chewing some extra fuel. Has your amount of driving in traffic vs highway changed? That makes a big difference too. Many vehicles will do around 2L/100km less on the open highway than around town.

  • Change spark plugs, air filter & fuel filter.

Can you please post the code your scanner picked up on?

If your car is actually burning oil you'll usually see some blue coloured smoke coming from your exhaust, so either your piston rings are shot or your valve seals are leaking into the combustion chamber.

You should be grateful with your fuel consumption anyway, I get 260km average from 60L of 98….

  • Not a single statement in the post can be read without confusion. Try better next time.

    Some hints:
    1. Too much oil - Oil or do you mean Petrol? There is a huge difference.
    2. Full Tank - What is Full Tank? Do you use exactly Full Tank until the last drop? Otherwise there can be 10-15 liters left in the tank. Perhaps better to write down exact Liters when you are at the pump.
    3. Average 420KM - That's a good one, surprisingly precise. But doesn't help anyway, being the only accurate measurement of something.
    4. Issue with the crankshaft scanner - There is no such thing as Crankshaft Scanner in the vehicle. I guess it was Crankshaft Sensor. And yes, it can give all sorts of troubles being one of the key sensors for the ignition timing.

    • By this time he knows he's asked the wrong question with the wrong terms….

if the car has a 50 litre tank and its getting 420 it is a tad high but not unusual for a higher mileage car being used in harsh urban cycle with aircon on

    • Yes i do mean petrol.

And yes i meant the crankshaft sensor. Do you know of any place i can get it ? Checked with Supercheap and they don't have it.

Found this on ebay but don't know if the price is reasonable:

  • Burning too much oil, 420km/tank? Are you talking about petrol?

  • 420km per tank on e10 is reasonable in the city.
Crankshaft sensor code could be from a start stall, if it was faulty the car would not run.
If it's a camshaft sensor the it would not do sequential injection, which could raise fuel consumption marginally
Servicing and tyre pressures can make a HUGE difference
If you do mean oil, you need a new engine pronto.

  • sorry guys - i should have been more careful with my choice of words to describe the problem.

Yes, i do mean petrol and not the engine oil.
    tr
Last time i filled up 45+-L and it gave me only 415 KM. I don't drive in the city and during week its only ride back and forth to the train station (hardly 5 minutes). On weekends sometimes i travel around on long routes but never in the city or inner roads.

I regularly change the engine oil and the oil filter.

    • Well, if you only drive back and forth to the station, that is pretty much the definition of 'city' driving. Short, low speed, not enough time for the engine to warm up properly. I'm guessing that for a 5min journey to the station you also stop and start a few times for intersections, also part of 'city' driving. Highway travel is the alternative, long drives (hour) at high speed, mostly at 100km/h.

If the crankshaft sensor is throwing a code replacing the crankshaft sensor might still continue to throw that code. You might need to find out what is causing the fault first. Increased fuel consumption might be a symptom of something else wrong.

(And don't go to supercheap auto unless you know exactly what you need, they aren't really a place for fixing mechanical issues, more for adding accessories)

  • Yep with the short trips they tend to chew up more petrol.

I have an astra of same year and same displacement and i get 520 to 540km a tank of bp ultimate maybe a air filter change is needed.
