  • How long would you spend in HK? Anywhere else nearby worth flying to from there?

Hk to Japan - peach airlines $200 return if you're lucky

HK to Taipei also $200 return if you're lucky

1 week in HK is more than enough IMO. To be honest there's not much do to in HK except eat. People always mention shopping but tbh their style doesn't really suit me. I always do spend a day or 2 trying to shop though. But these days, most shopping centres are flooded with mainlanders…

In fact, most parts of HK are flooded with people. It's kind of sad how packed it is now. I remember in the 90s it was a lot better. On my last trip I went to Cheung island (Cheung chau, famous for their bun festival which is in may this year I think) just to get away from all the people. It was nice I suppose, walking around pretty much the whole island. There's no cars allowed. Very quiet.

For history not much comes to mind except the HK walled city park which has an exhibit explaining the wall city's history. I found that really fascinating. There's also the HK musuem of history. The ding ding (tram) in HK island is great, it's super cheap and I've actually taken it from one end to the other - it's a good way of seeing 'old meets new'. But I wouldn't recommend this as it takes a good 90 or so minutes. I was interested and had nothing to do.

There are actually some good hikes if you're into that. Next time I'm going to go hike up lion rock. Don't bother with the beaches in HK, even a shitty fake beach like Brighton le sands, Sydney is better than any beach in HK.

Do a Macau side trip only if you're very interested in doing so. I didn't like Macau. Everything is spread out and hard to get to. You can use the free casino shuttles to help you get around though. I'm not into casinos. At least Vegas had a fun vibe and had other things to do apart from gambling.

Jesus I've rambled on forever. One last tip 0 Victoria peak. Everyone goes there. Everyone takes the peak tram. Screw that. It's expensive and the lines are really really long. Take the number 1 green minibus from the bus interchange of Hong Kong MTR station. It's fast and cheap. You will go up the mountain on its windy roads and get a glimpse of the expensive houses there. You take the bus til the end, so don't worry about having to talk to the driver. At the peak, don't go into that stupidly shaped building (at the top there is a viewing platform, but this is not free, $$$), there's a free viewing area just outside of the building. However, this view is average (from memory the dumbass building gets in the way a little bit). Now there is a circular loop around the peak, and this is where you wanna go, it's free and all the pictures on postcards are taken from this walk. This walk is signposted but not as well as the stupid fugly building.

      OK hope this was useful.

Haha, this was great. And great timing as I'm flying to Hong Kong tomorrow. Thank you!

        • haha glad to have helped!!! :) have a good trip

        • @ippy:
          Honk Honk!

      • Well mainlanders are tourist too so if you flock to the tourist areas chances are there won't be much bargain and you will be swamped with the mainlanders on day tours.

I suppose it's less so nowadays after the protest.

        • So this sounds really dumb but one time I hit 5 different Uniqlos because there was something I really wanted. I went to Sha Tin (in New Territories), I went to Mong Kok (Kowloon), I went to TST, I went to Causeway Bay (HK Island). All the shelves were like wiped out. Finally I went to the one in near Olympic and I got what I wanted. It took FIVE VISITS. There were just so many people crammed into each one too. Olympic was a breath of fresh air actually. I was surprised Sha Tin New Town Plaza was SOOOO freaking crammed with people. That place has changed a lot. Maybe it is because it's on the blue line which goes up to the mainland - why go all the way down to Kowloon or something when you can get off at Sha Tin??? I don't know.

        • @ippy:

I'm surprised you didnt find it in ST but all the other places you hit up are tourist districts!

On hindsight perhaps you could have asked them to look up their system to see which store had what you want? When I visit HK nowadays I really get a new tailor made suits or scavenge whatever sale they have at G2000, last year I got myself a nice long wool down jacket for less than AUD $120.

        • @Speedz: I just happened to hit 5 over a period of 2 weeks. I didn't go to each of them all at once. Of course most of their stores are going to be in touristy places but that said they were very big stores.

          Sha Tin is amazingly crowded.

I like G2000 but they can be hit and miss, one time I spent hundreds (AUD) in there but another year I spent $0.

        • @ippy:

I agree, quality and design is a bit of a hit and miss, I was lucky last year.

At the same time I can never get used to so many people again, especially when I have a young family with me but I had a great time with my mate in MK dinner and drinking away till 2am and it was still busy!

Can't really see that in Australia in most places.

        • @ippy: Shatin is actually a popular tourist district amongst mainlanders. Its on the east rail line which means easy to get to, a few big shopping centres around and its got everything, it even has an Ikea next to the train station. In fact, the NTP was once crowned as the busiest shopping centre in the world.

      • Thank you, very informative. What time of the year is best to go?

        • HK climate isn't so bad - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Hong_Kong at first glance it looks like nothing us Aussies aren't used to, however we have a dry heat and they have a super humid heat. So for a more comfortable trip I would say def avoid the middle of summer. July is also summer holidays for the Northern hemisphere (incl HK) so you would want to avoid that anyway.

Winter is not so bad but every now and then it gets uncharacteristically cold. It's been some time since I was over there in winter (2011 was my last time) and it was quite smoggy, pollution was a bit shit. I waited every day for the perfect time to hit the peak (lol I like to go up there every time I go) but in the end there was no perfect day and I went on my last day.

I'm not sure why it was so gross because unlike up north, there is very little need for heating (which is the cause of all the shit pollution in the northern/central areas of China). I remember reading articles about how the pollution from the mainland was coming down south but there were other articles saying HK pumps a decent amount of shit in the air all by themselves.

TL;DR: No bad time really, but Autumn and Spring is less hassle.

        • @ippy:

If you cannot stand humidity like me I wouldn't visit till mid/late Oct. Even then you'll get a some hot humid days.

November is a great time, and so is Winter. Coming from Melbourne Winter I get around just fine in HK winter without the need for coats and parkas everyday.

        • General rule of thumb, don't go during Australian winter.

      • As a guy living in Surfers Paradise originally from Wanchai Hong Kong
I can approve your message only where the part saying Hong Kong has shitty beaches statement is wrong to me. As you don't seem to me that you have been to the Shek-O beach. It's nice there :) Apart from taking the risky minibus to the Peak, could also take a double-deck bus which takes you from Central or Admiralty to the Peak. I like how you described that "fugly" building to be honest however it is a landmark not really just a building. It's been there since the British for what I know lol

P.S. Good luck to julesa for not getting lost.

        • Well commenced under the British rule, I remember back in the 80s it was just a pile of dirt ground! :D

        • The peak building is some stupid tourist trap, it adds nothing of value, doesn't matter that it was built before the handover. It houses a Madame Tussauds and clothing stores. It's tacky. It's not culturally or historically significant. It is not a landmark. People go up to the peak to see the view, and they are merely trying to capitalise from the foot traffic.

I don't think the #1 minibus is risky at all. You get on at a bus interchange - not exactly hard to find. You get off at the end. No need to say anything to the driver. Tap your octopus and sit tight… not exactly hard.

Australia has better beaches full stop. You wouldn't go on holiday to go seek a beach that is lower in quality than something you can easily find back home…. Please don't compare the Gold Coast with Shek-O… just don't do it. I imagine locals don't hang out on Surfers Paradise anyway. I've only been a few times but I like Burleigh Heads - how good is the Pacific Ocean?

    • take the ferry across to Macau, the Las Vegas of Asia.

HK also has Disneyland which is worth going.

    • A ferry to Macau is pretty easy, and although I don't gamble I enjoyed visiting the Portuguese church and ruins, seeing the pandas, watching House of Dancing Water, catching the various shows in the different casinos, eyeing the prostitutes doing laps of the basement in the Grand Lisboa… good fun for a few days! :)

  • I might give it a go if Qantas cabin crew are not as surly and abrupt as they have been in the past. Maybe shelling out a little more for Cathay is worth it.

    • +2

I too like the Cathay crew better, but their seats are horrible, feels like half a size smaller than on Qantas.

Qantas also have better food from AU to HK direction and about equal on the way back with much better wine selection both ways.

    • +1

Reminds me of an ozbargainer in the past commenting that qantas staff are often older, blonde ladies with an attitude. The negs. It was a wreck

    • I flew Cathay ADL-HKG last year and they turned off the air in the cabin one hour into the flight and the window shades had to be down all flight (except on landing) and got scowed at if you dare lifted it up. I'd go Qantas any day.

      • I've bern barked at by many a butch bitch or pansy on QF, depends on the day/flight

        • Understandably.

Another tempting deal for a November holiday. Clearly I have upvoted too many IWTF deals as I got "cannot vote for this deal - We have detected a possible link between you and the original poster or the store itself…. further investigation on your account for possible sock puppeting will be conducted"

I'm doing 10 nights from 22 October, and paid $634 pax.

I hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew because I'm there for 10 nights. I'm a huge foodie and have already started a list of restaurants to visit.

Don't forget that you can get an extra $30 off if you buy from BYOJET by Wednesday. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/291402
