          @unco:

          That's because it's OzBargain

          Not OzSavings…

  • Thanks for the heads up OP, I didn't know Qantas was part of the AirBnB program. What is people's opinion of AirBnB; has anyone used it for Paris and, if so, do you have any properties you would recommend, or conversely, avoid?

    • Haven't used it in Paris, but I've used Airbnb in Wellington and Hobart, and so far so good for me.

Thanks. It is always a bit scary because you run the risk that the property is not what is described or they try to charge you for damage you didn't cause.

        • But they rely on reviews, and if the place isn't as described or they try to rip you off, they will get terrible reviews and consequently lose their business.
At least that's how I hope it works.

    • The only time I've ever used it was actually in Paris. And it was great. But it was 3 years ago, so no idea if that property is still available sorry.

      • Thanks for the reply. It sounds like it might be worth considering.

    • used it for Paris last year. Found an amazing apartment in Alesia, close to the metro. I reckon book an apartment out of the city a bit to get a feel for Parisian life more (less touristy). We were near a nice bakery and lovely cafes

Thanks for the reply. OMG the Boulangers, my mouth is watering just thinking about them; we have a favourite one in Les Halles. We don't tend to go to restaurants in Paris anymore, just grab some sandwiches from the Boulanger, some cheese and wine from the markets, and that is dinner done.

Do you have the address details still?

Airbnb is great. Have used it extensively in Australia. Always go by the user reviews when you look for a property. The guests and hosts review each other so very less chance of getting scammed.

    • Just book a place with a few solid reviews. If the reviews are good, you generally know what you're in for!

    • Used it in Paris in 2015 and it was great but I just tried searching for the property for you and it's not listed anymore.
The guy gave a tablet with data plan to use to help us get around while staying there.

I think you should be fine as long as you stick to the ones with lots of good reviews.

    • I've used AirBnB in France and Japan.

Paris was great, and had wonderful views of the tour eiffel, and Invalides.

Cannot recommend it enough over hotels.

    • I used airbnb in Paris and thoroughly recommend. Much better value than a hotel especially if staying for a while and you'll make use of kitchen, laundry facilities.
This is where I stayed: https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/2906241, it was gorgeous and a great location with a lovely host. But - a big but - only if you are ok with going up and down 7 stories of narrow stairs!! If stairs are an issue generally, watch out for this when browsing properties as elevators aren't common in Paris.
For airbnb in general, trust the reviews - read them thoroughly.

    • it's hit or miss. Stay away from properties with not many reviews, or an unbelievably cheap price compared to most in the area.

  • Thanks everyone for the responses, it makes me a lot happier about looking at the airBnB option.

  • Thanks Op. Little bit late as I've already booked for April. Just wondering whether it is possible to claim the points for already paid bookings?

    • +1

      I doubt it!

Always worth a phone call to Qantas, or see if they have an IM as part of their site. You don't get what you don't ask for. All it will cost you is a phone call and some time, and who knows?

      • +1

You won't, has to be booked through the Qantas Airbnb portal anyway.

Have used it all over the world. Really haven't had a bad experience so far. Just booked a place in Italy now

Feel sorry for you mate - would hate to incur a loss of 3K QFF points!

      • +6

Just 200,000 more points and he could have had a brand new toaster!

        • Thankfully already got 200k :)

        • +1

Feel sad for people who do not understand that real value of QFF points is in converting them for flight upgrades only and it takes less than 50K points in some cases. Redeeming them for gifts is as good as throwing away your points!

        • @chin: Yup. Converting them to goods is the worst value. Upgrades are the "best" in terms of relative value. Flights are not bad either. Sometimes gift cards are alright too.

    • Yeah I feel your pain, just booked $600 for Hong Kong on Sunday :|

Everytime I look at airbnb, the prices I see are not much better than hotels or apartments that appear on the hotel booking websites. Not sure why a lot of people are raving about it. Then again, I only look at whole houses rather than rooms or beds.

    • Try comparing hotel rooms to apartment studio/1 bedders.

    • Airbnb is more of a personalised experience of living with a local and getting to know the place like a local. I understand it is not everyone's priority though. I would prefer Local's knowledge any day over tourist maps and brochures that is handed at Hotel reception

    • i did a 2 month trip through america, it was either a nice airbnb or a low rated so I always opted for airbnb

  • Is Airbnb illegal in Singapore?

    • Airbnb has a lot of issues with regulators around the world (mostly in relation to people renting out entire apartments and 'pricing out' locals). However, as a guest you don't have anything to worry about, the authorities will be targeting the lessor and Airbnb directly. As to your original question…

  • so pissed off i didnt realise qantas was linked to airbnb i just booked like 2 days ago sigh

  • +1

Just compare the prices between the regular airbnb page and the Qantas offering. I've always noticed the Qantas portal for bookings has been significantly higher than using airbnb direct. Maybe not always but something to keep in mind (even at triple points the price difference has not been low enough to justify for me).

  • +1

I wouldn't lose any sleep over this one.
My wife was booking some accommodation last night and there was a significant price difference booking through the Qantas site rather than direct. I'm talking 10% over a 4 day Easter stay.
