Made to Show ID When Buying Cola

Hi all,

Last weekend i purchased a 4 pack of Cola (non-alcoholic) from Dan Murphys in Alexandria NSW. Upon paying for the cola the cashier asked for my ID and the conversation pretty much went as follows:

Cashier: Can I see your ID
Me: It's cola.
Cashier: I still need to see your ID.
ME: …but it's not alcoholic.
Cashier: It's classed as a mixer so I'll still need to see your ID.
Me: …but it's not alcoholic.
Cashier: That's the rules, you need to show ID to purchase it as it's deemed a mixer.

Obviously i showed my ID. I have nothing to hide when buying cola!!! (but c'mon, seriously it's cola). After much thought on the way home i decided to email Dan Murphy's (hotline was closed so i couldn't call) and inquire into when this new "non-alcoholic 18+ cola/mixer" regulation had been put into place. Surely it's a new thing, maybe I can break it to a current affair or the project. I'm sure they'd be interested in the scoop.

Anywho, back to the present, I'm still waiting for clarification from Dan's but can anyone in the OzB community help me make sense of this ruling?

Please and thank you

It's because of RSA Rules; Any place that serves/sells alcohol has to ask for ID, and they're not meant to sell to anyone underage, even if they were just buying a non alcoholic beverage.

Show the ID and move on ( If you have nothing to hide)

Because you have nothing to hide, privacy is unimportant? You have nothing to say, thus free speech is also unimportant, right? And so it starts…

  • "I don't have it." What now?

"Then you don't buy this non-alcoholic cola…. But for a price, I can point you to the nearest Coles."

Nuh, Dan's in a front for Woolworths.

She was just trying to pick you up.

To be on/served in a licensed premises you must be over 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or guardian. If the cashier thought you were under 25, as Dan's ID 25 policy is then you would be asked for ID.

  • DM's are required by law and liquor licensing to ask for proof of age regardless.

Wow that's even more ridiculous than my recent experience. I was buying non-alcoholic beer in Woolies Dickson and the self serve checkout machine flagged the purchase as needing staff approval. Non alcoholic beer that was available in the soft drink section…

I miss the days when they'd look at me suspiciously and ask for my ID …

  • The point you missed, whether you/I/we agree or not - it is the law, at licensed premises/stores selling Alcohol and or Mixers. This is classed as a mixer, so accept it and applaud the store staff for doing their job….correctly. If you do not like the rules being followed at the store, don't go there. Besides, supermarkets are cheaper.

    • What if you were buying crisps. Do you know if that would require id?

What if you were buying crisps.

We don't have crisps in Australia.

      • Didn't know you could use crisps as mixers.

        • Just trying to ascertain whether they would sell anything to an under 18. For example, would they sell a gift card or wine glasses to an under 18.

      • i work at Dan's and technically people under age aren't allowed on the premises as its licensed.
and therefore if they look under 25 and cant produce proof of age they must leave the property.

If that person happened to be employed by the government/Dan Murphy's to check if staff are enforcing RSA any purchase would be a breach.

        TL:DR
licensed premises - ID required to be on property
as ridiculous as it sounds staff must refuse any purchase and escort from the property.

    • Agreed. The staff member could face a personal fine of something like $20k so why push the issue? Just let them do their job.

  • Dan Murphy's are a licensed premise as they provide tastings etc and therefore everyone not matter what age is required to show ID when asked.

I work at Dan's and they are pretty strict on ID checks.
As well as checks by the government, young people are employed by Dan's to make a purchase at Dan Murphy's and check if they get asked for ID. Fail 3 of these checks and its grounds for dismissal

Why would the staff risk a large fine as well as their job?

I hate checking peoples IDs and it really makes you hate your time at work when people make a fuss for just trying to follow instructions.
it especially sucks when you ID a borderline customer and then some senior comes up and is like "do you wanna see my ID…."

EDIT: just re-read your whole rant and your are that unhappy you had to get your ID out…….

this person isn't checking your ID for their own personal gain.

  • I'm curious as to why you didn't go to coles/woolies to buy your cola, which probably would have been much cheaper. That's basic ozbargain 101 stuff.
