Hiring a Driver in Bali and Few Other Questions

Hi Guys,

Hope everyone is well.

I'm organising a bucks trip a Bali during Easter for 10 mates and wanted to get help from this awesome community on a few things:

  1. Thinking about hiring a driver. We have done this before but I can vaguely remember. How much does it cost per day? We were thinking $50 + $overtime/car

  2. We are staying at Seminyak, any good/classy bars we could go to? I was thinking clubs but my mates are pretty tamed lol (i'm not) .. I only know about potato head….

  3. Good food places? Last time i was there for a wedding but we kept going these pork chop restaurants kinda got sick of it…

Also, my friend is having concerns about paying for the hotel via PayPal. So basically we booked this villa via Booking.com but the villa owner/provider emailed us with a direct PayPal link. Is this safe? I never thought of it because they have been emailing us using booking.com portal but I do see where my friend's concerns are.

Many thanks in advance!

    • There are plenty of drivers in Bali but if all 10 of you are travelling at once you might need to find one with a mini bus or hire 2 vans.
    • Motel Mexicola would probably suit you, great food & cocktails and turns into a club as it gets later. Potato Head etc are full of other aussies/tarts instagramming themselves the whole time which bores me. Sisterfields is good.
    • thanks for the suggestions ! Really appreciated!

We will most likely hire 2 drivers.

Yeh I heard motel Mexicola before thanks! Haha we will need at least some Instagram pics =p!

    Hey, sounds fun!

We are over here at the moment (Holed up in bed with the shits today… Don't accidently drink the water!).

$50 a day is more or less the going rate, you'd get 10 hours for that usually then plus overtime, plus you can add a tip if you appreciate the service. If you use Uber they have an Uber Trip option here. Which is minimum of 5 hours at $6 an hour, although you'd probably need a big van or bus with 10 people, unless you are keen to get scooters, which are about $5 - $10 a day. There are penty of drivers on TripAdvisor. Probably more divers than all the other stuff to do combined.

We don't drink and not a fan of Aussies ( As you can probably expect :) ) so we stay away from the bars or clubs, but I'd imagine there would be others with decent suggestions. Google maps can often be a good place to look, lots of reviews on there now.

Food really depends on what you want to eat and what you want to pay. You can get some good fried rice with chicken (nasi goreng ayam) for $1 - $2 from warungs in most areas. Beef is generally more expensive than chicken, so that's another thing. I'd suggest checking out the area in Google Maps again and looking for restaurants, plenty around Seminyak eat street, and they have tons of reviews in the main tourist areas.

As for paying with PayPal, I'd suggest having travel insurance, even if just for yourself, and keep in mind that if you do get scammed, there is always the option of a charge back through your card provider, whether PayPal want to help you or not. Read some reviews of the place and make sure it's legit, should be sweet.

Hopefully some of that helps, enjoy the trip!

    • Wow thank you for the detailed reviews! U r awesome!

I hope you all get better soon!

We will offer the driver with $50 bucks to start with plus over time. I read some shady stuff about uber in Bali. Apparently they are really scared because they are competiting against local drivers (I'm not surprised) so we just gonna stick with private drivers.

We will check out the food on google map when we get there!

Re:PayPal apparently it's okay. I got some mad covers through my credit card so hopefully all good.

Enjoy the rest of ur trip!

    1) Can't help sorry.
    2) As someone said—> Potato Head is full of Aussies instagramming themselves. Still very good though. I would also hit up Ku De Ta and the W Hotel as well for the daytime lounging/evening bar. Be prepared to pay Aussie prices for drinks at these places though.
Later on in the night, hit up La Favela.
(All these places are in Seminyak. It doesn't sound like your mates would be keen to go to SkyGarden in Kuta)
    3) Motel Mexicola as someone above said.

    • Thanks for your help!

We will check out those places! Last time we went we paid Aussie prices for drinks as well.

Do u know any place with decent prices and legit alcohol haha

Have you considered using AirBNB to stay at. I stayed at an excellent place in Seminyak just last week right in the middle. It was fantastic. Wont sleep 10 though but they also rent out the villa next door - cost was $200 a night per villa.

    To your questions:

1 - Plenty of drivers. Can PM you the details of the driver we used if I can find them. He was the one who picked me up from the airport via our AirBNB and we used him for our final day as we were homeless for about 12 hours. Cost 600K ($60).

2 - You have Potato Head (which you know), Ku De Ta (Similar to Potato Head - not a bad joint), Champagne Bar and the Ice Bar (I think it was called but it wasn't made of ice just a big blue shell).

3 - Depends on your definition of 'good food'. Do you want Indonesian/Bali food or western food? The pork chop places you're thinking of is Baba Gorlang (totally didn't spell that right), they're easy enough to avoid. If you want fancy, you can sit on the stadium seating area at the Char Char Bar and Grill (french food). I really enjoyed the bistro across the road from Char Char (don't know it's name). It was good quality solid Indo food and their taster entry of satays was amazing.

If you have the time and haven't locked in the accommodation, I'd suggest you guys also head up to Ubud for a few days. Glorious place that.

Also download the Go Jek app before you go. It's basically a deliver app where drivers will bring you almost anything you desire (you can even order massages). Most restaurants can be ordered from through it. Delivery costs 90c. Great for a rainy/hung over day where you can't be bothered hitting the streets.

    • Hey there! Thank you for your help!

We have locked in our accomodation. We got this massive villa in Seminyak through booking.com. We booked quite late so all the good and cheaper ones are sold out. Nevertheless we ended up booking a 10 bedder villa! Perfect for us coz we have 10 guys.

      1. Friend referred someone he used while he was in Bali and they are charging us $45 per 10 hours + $10/hr during overtime.

      2. Thanks for these places! We will definitely check them out!

      3. I know the pork chop u were referring to. I can't remember the name but it's definitely not how you spell it haha!! Good food as in other than pork chops. Last time we were in Bali we kept eating pork for some reason. So I really just want to eat some other local stuff. I heard char char is quite nice and will suss out the other places you have mentioned.

We just gonna stay around seminiya this time because half my mates are lazy as fk lol..

      Ok downloading GoJek now!

Just back from Bali, before departure hired a driver and SUV on mates recommendation rather than using one of the many tour touts, guy (Robi) was fantastic, spoke excellent english and had a sense of humour, did wood carvers, temple built BC, waterfall, hillside rice fields and Ubud. Highlight was the volcano, had excellent lunch there for peanuts, restaurant was built out of a cliff, views of volcano and lake from there awesome. Whole day just $50 worth every cent. http://robibalitours.com
