Looking to Buy a 4k TV, Not Wanting to Get Ripped off

Hey all,

I am looking to buy a 4k tv that i can connect to my PC as a secondary monitor so I can watch some 4K movies and Netflix.

I am not too sure on what to look for but from what I know,

I don't need 3D
I would prefer something large like 50" to 60"
I have heard I should get a tv with HDR
I don't care if it's curved, cheaper the better.

I was thinking of this tv:

It seems to be between $1200 And $1800 depending on the sizes although is there something I should be careful about or should know before making a purchase?

Any info would be amazing, thanks

Edit: I'm looking for around $1000-$2000,
Should I just wait and buy a more expensive model or would there be… I guess 'futureproof'

I have heard I should get a tv with HER

      Did you mean "HDR"?

        very like, HDR yes.

i suggest the OP read as much as they can, and just look out for 4K bargains on this site, the comments following a 4K bargain will usually direct them on whether its a good deal or not.

aka, dont buy retail. wait for the next deal.

      • Whoops typo. (On mobile)

  • I found this website helpful for reviews and terminology http://www.rtings.com/tv/learn

I ended up getting a Sony X9300D (also known as a X930D), which is above the price range you are looking at. But you could find a Sony X7500D in the price range you are looking for.

It has 10 bit HDR after a software update. So it is future proof.

The quality of the up-scaling on the Sony TV sets was a significant factor in my decision making. That is how well it deals with non-4K content. Broadly all 4K TVs will display 4K content well, but most of the content we watch is not 4K (yet) and 480p, 720p, 1080p can look terrible.

    • Would you say this is a good deal?

What should I look for when looking at the deals posted to see if it will be good enough?

      • Looks pretty good. That or wait for a JB hi fi sale.

X8000D is the mid-range 4K. I can't recall off hand what differentiates it from the X7000/7500.

        • That or wait for a JB hi fi sale.

What would I want to look for in one of those sales?
As in, just look around at all the TV's and tick off a few things such as OLED, local dimming ect and go from there?

          @0burntrice0:
I meant merely that JB Hifi seem to have sales with reasonable regularity.

Only LG are currently selling OLED, everyone else has LCD. You are going to pay premium with anything with local dimming, save for Hisense but there are some trade-offs there.

With a JB sale a X8500D mid range can be as much as 20% so on a 65 inch at $4000, that's a big deal.

  • I bought a series 6 from samsung but returned it after finding out it was only 50htz (they use some marketing term to hide it). My budget was maximum 1300$, the sony 55Kdx7000d was in my sight then i got distracted by the EBgames offer on the 49kdx8000 (about 999 but if you had the survey, could be 899). Went to read a bit more reviews, had my eyes for the 55" hisense series 7 (about 1290 at jbhifi). I went to Jbhifi, looked at it, saw the 50" at 990 … ask for a discount, left with 50" hisense series 7 at 950$ from jbhifi northlake

    • sorry to re-open an old thread. Which model Samsung did you return ? Is the Hisense really that much better ?

      • I returned the samsung ua55ku6000w, when I got home I did some further research … Just to be sure … The hisense is apparently also 50Htz but its picture quality is much better.

You will find a lot of reviews online about the series 7 from hisense, the Ui isn't what I would call sluggish but the TV guide can take a bit of time to update. The remote isn't a magic remote like the older models but is quite easy to use. I find a bit annoying that the Tv isn't android, will have to buy a Xiaomi mi box or an amazon fire tv to get Kodi and other apps (which is fine if you look at the price of the TV). Plus, have a test before buying a sound bar, I don't find necessary for the use I have (salesman will tey to upsale you)

I went back to JBHifi as the price dropped a week after I bought it, they refunded me in cash the difference (about $100).

        • Cool I bought samsung ua55ku6000w 55 for $1095. I think im going to stick with it as I've had a Hisense before and its a bit slugglish with the remote and the menu. Won't be able to check the Samsung out for another month!!! (moving in to a new place in a months time)

  • If you're looking to watch 4K Netflix via your PC then make sure your video card is HDCP2.2 compliant otherwise you'll only get 1080p Netflix options.
