BYO Modem, Unlimited Data - Brisbane

Looking for a BYO Modem for our investment property, for students to use.
It is an apartment unit so some "dark spots".
Also NBN not available.

Hope someone can shed some light.

Currently on Exetel ADSL2+ Northside of Bris CBD (Kedron Area) it's $54.99 per month unlimited. BYO modem and no contract attracts $99 setup fee. Works fine for Netflix/streaming. Speedtests at line sync, no major slowdown at peak, overall it works well. Also note from quick glance at website they will not charge a changeover fee if NBN does become available and you stay with them.

    • TQ I'll have a look.

  • How do you stop things like illegal downloads that if caught, I am guessing the account owner will be the one in court?

    • Hmm I don't know the answer. Do you? Any precedent cases?

You'll have to make sure you, the account holder, is protected somehow. Just having an open internet access I would not think you are immune to what it's used for.
Would be the same as if your child downloads movies.
Check on whirlpool forums and ask about wanting an internet access point for a shared accommodation. Maybe it's something simple like a router that you can have multiple user passwords.

I also suggest looking to see if Telstra cable is available so the speed will be ok when multiple students are using it at once, rather than the much slower adsl.

  • I pay $49.95 a month for 500GB in Spring Hill and they also offer $54.95 for Unlimited

No setup fees unlike Exetel and you can get a credit when you are referred by an existing customer.

    • Which ISP?

      • Doh! spintel.net.au

        • TQ will have aloo,k.

          How's the performance?

        • @Pumpkin_rrr:

Generally around 14-12mps, as low as 9 during peak times but never an issue with Netflix, Stan, catch-up ect.

I was previously with Exetel (both Optus wholesale I believe) and have had no issues with either,

    TPG

No line setup fee / will need tech access to the MDF

Other vendors can and will charge 299 new line fee

    • Yes I heard someone got charged $299 in a Unit with existing line. She challenged but I don't know how much she ends up paying.

How's yr TPG performance? BYO modem?

        Perfect
Always BYO modem, I am switched on and have my modem setup how I like
Although I am now on Airfibre 100/40
When I did have TPG I had rock solid performance and got pings of 10-13ms to local Brisbane servers
Mind you I was living 250m from Chermside exchange with reasonably good copper
3db Line profile non interleaved (tpg can do this if you ask nicely) which meant good speed / pings
No drop outs even in wild weather
Once I moved my service to Airfibre (VDSL2+, the ADSL service was no longer used)
TPG in my opinion are great, even sent a telstra tech out to do the work

If you have an existing line $59 will be the standard reactivation fee, although with TPG and a lot of people tend to get this side of things messed up and I feel is the main issue with apartments, TPG will only bring your service to the "A" side of the MDF, jumpering to the "customer B side" is not usually done, although if there is an existing line you should already be jumpered across anyway

In a new rental apartment we were told we could $240 of the line setup fee back and only had to cover 59 ourselves which was fair enough

I have been happy with my service with the new company but TPG is certainly good, remembering like any provider, a crap line = crap service

        • Thanks Shawn for your comprehensive response. I'll need to learn a lot more about this.
