ProQ Frontier BBQ Smoker $268 (+ $9.95 Shipping to Metro Locations) @ Barbeques Galore

80

Have been smoking meat for the past 10 years and this is hands down the best bullet smoker I have used. Really enjoyable and easy to use!
It's a bargain for a bloody well-made smoker. You won't find a better one at this price point. Pro-Q has a great name amongst the BBQ community.

[The Details]
The ProQ Frontier BBQ Smoker is designed for any method of cooking, be it BBQ grilling, roasting, meat smoking and water smoking (IMO best for smoking)
Dimensions: 102cm height x 43cm diameter
Make: Fully vitreous enameled steel body (with a modular design so that it easily locks together)

You can remove the two middle sections or 'stackers,' which is really helpful depending on your cook. Also it has folding metal handles, will easily turn into a portable, kettle BBQ - Ideal for easy transportation for camping trips, picnics of for the beach.

  • Would you go with this one or the Fornetto one that bunnings is selling?

      Being a Pro Q frontier owner. I can say it's great. Having never had that Fornetto, all I can say is that I've heard that Pro Q's after sales customer service is way better than Fornetto. Again, only what I've heard, never actually needed after sales service.

    • I reckon you'd be better off with the Pro Q, they're pretty much identical but I hear it's built a little better than the Fornetto.

      I've got the Fornetto at home, only used it once but they do the job.

    • Would strongly encourage you to go the Pro-Q - you will not regret it

    Fantastic smoker and this is a great price!

  • Wondering if this is better than a Weber. How much is the saving if $268 is a great price?

      The Frontier Elite seems to go for about 470 at other places.. I think its the updated version with slightly thicker steel and a few other tweaks.

      They're an Australian company and seem to take their smoking/barbecuing pretty seriously.

      The best weber product to compare it to is probably the Smokey Mountain

  • Where would I get the wood chips for smoking from?

    • +1

      Bunnings, Woolworths, probably most BBQ stores, specialist smoking/BBQ stores.

        Worth noting iron bark makes for a great smokey flavor and is readily available here in Aus. Much cheaper than buying chips all the time, but of course isn't the same as Hickory etc. Personally I love the flavor from iron bark though, the fact it's so cheap is a bonus (or free if you got friends on a property).

          Yep we are bloody lucky to have native wood that smokes well & gives our meat wonderful smokey flavors. Can completely change a dish paired with your usual rub/marinates

  • No discount codes? What do these usually go for?

    • I paid over $400 for mine - looks like they hover around the 400+ for the elite

      • Cheers, just bought one. Now to tell Minister of Finance!

        I've been on the Australasian Barbecue Alliance Facebook page for a while and it all looks so awesome.

  • Purchased! Thanks @OP it's been on the shopping list all summer (been watching BBQ Pitmasters)

  • Might be a stupid question but it doesn't require a gas bottle, does it?

  • What is the difference between this and the (Frontier) elite version?

    I have been looking at Weber Q for a while but think I might get this instead. I need one for steaks, sausages, roasting but with this one I could get smoking experience as well. Is it better than the Q then?

    • I would say they are for different purposes. I have a Weber Q - it's amazing. However, I believe it's not so great as a smoker. While you can get smoking boxes to put the chips in, or go down the DIY path and wrap them up in foil, it isn't great at cooking at low temperatures, and low and slow is what you are after when smoking.

      Don't get me wrong, I love my Q and I will go out and get the smoker boxes to see how it goes. I believe it will be a good all-rounder, but if you really want to get into smoking, you need something like this…

      ProQ = Smoking Specialist
      WeberQ = BBQ/Roasting

    • This is a charcoal barbie, weber Qs to my knowledge are all gas and have fairly weak burners (in terms of heat output) so you need to cook steaks with the lid down for example.

      For my money charcoal is much better for putting a quick sear on things. You can also move the coal to one side and do a really nice roast using the "indirect" method.. not to mention the smoking inserts.

      If you're new to charcoal i recommend getting a chimney starter.. it makes starting charcoal a breeze.
