I never understood these things. Such a huge capacity to fill and literally almost no speed to fill it with. Assuming the write speed is 45MB/s (optimistic) and the exact size was 200000MB (200GB).

    200000/45 = 4444.44 minutes

    4444.44/60 = 74 hours

You would literally need to write to it constantly for >3 days to fill this thing.

Nintendo Switch? Perfect use case scenario for a 200gb, and obviously the size doesn't translate like that…

      • Yeah I've been thinking of getting this card for that purpose.

The card may do well in a phone or something else too if it's being used for app storage.

    • ^ this

    • +3

Apparently you don't play games or watch/create video.

Also you can literally never have enough storage. I have far more than 200GB of music. I still cannot copy my collection onto this card.

      • -5

Why would you store 200GB of music on a MicroSD anyway? That's just asking for failure. Get a proper hard drive. Don't see how gaming has anything to do with it either.

        • +2

I imagine because you're using it in a mobile device that doesn't have internal capacity to cover the storage requirements.

I didn't read it as though this is his only copy of that data.

        • -1

@Smigit: Yeah but regardless, you're never going to listen to 200GB of music. That's ridiculous.

        • +1

@potplanty: personally if I can I like to copy all my media rather than pick and choose and risk not having it there when I get the itch for something different.

What is ridiculous is your pointless and utterly absurd comments. Why bother commenting when you have no idea what you are talking about?

You should apply for the position of chief strategist with the NBN, they are always on the lookout for Luddites to fill their ranks.

@Maverick-au: Ahh Maverick, another one of your all-too-kind comments. I was beginning to think I'd miss you in this thread.

        • Don't see how gaming has anything to do with it?

The Switch uses micro sd cards, as could the Wii U. If I need to explain this concept….

        • @potplanty: I've listened to over 150GB in the last 20 years.
I know, because my music has play counts.

          I only listen t about 8 hours a day.
200GB doesn't sound unreasonable at 320kbps; and totally easily doable if it was FLAC at 30mb per song.

I have one of these in my phone. No issues with write speed and very handy for photo backup, app installs, downloads. Phone storage fills up fast with 20mp raw photos and 2k video recording.

I would have been happy with 64gb but at the price point these are at, it's worth it.

      • Hmm 200gb of videos and photos your friends really aren't interested in ……its Like visiting the relatives and having to watch 8mm home movies or wedding videos …..How much interesting content can people create and find .

        • +1

when you have family or travel you take plenty of photos/videos. the extra space just gives piece of mind

        • +1

You're not lucky enough to have an exhibitionist partner are you? :P

    • +1

I think you need to check your math (units to be exact).

    • +10

      200000/45 = 4444.44 minutes
      4444.44/60 = 74 hours

      Actually, 200000/45 = 4444.44 seconds

      4444.44/60 = 74 minutes

      So, not quite so bad…

      • I should probably make sure I've eaten something that day before I try to math next time.

    • And they are fragile if handled a lot ….Has micro SD with a slight crack and stopped working. Lucky was only $16gb so cheap hate it to be 209gb expensive.

      • Exactly. I'd much rather a full sized SD so I could use it with my DSLR instead.

        • Just use it with an adaptor. They are the same speed and micro SD is more flexible.

The advantage of SD vs micro SD is they are usually cheaper, available in larger maximum capacities and slightly more difficult to lose.

        • Exactly. I'd much rather a full sized SD so I could use it with my DSLR instead.

Surely you mean 35mm film? Do you realise that they have microSD to SD adapters? But of course anyone who knows anything would be going for a high speed SD card.

        • -1

@Fiximol: They're not the same speed. You can get SD cards that write at 250MB/s whereas this doesn't even read at 100MB/s.

        • high speed SD card

Exactly. You think I'd bother with the 95MB/s SD cards?

        • @potplanty:

That's not true. You can get UHS-II Micro SD as well. They just cost more.

They can only reach that speed if they are UHS-II, and AFAIK the only cameras which fully takes advantage of UHS-II are Fuji X series and the latest flagships (e.g. Panasonic GH5). The Canon 5D mk IV doesn't, nor does the Nikon D810 or the Sony A7II series.

        • @Fiximol: That's 275MB/s READ speed. Write speed is shit.

The card is rated U3 for at least 30MB/s continuous recording (AKA writing).

And later on: In benchmark tests the UHS-II Extreme Pro reached up to 264.9 MB/s sequential read speed. The write speed measured up to at 106.5MB/s

        • @potplanty:

Fine, have a look at the lexar then.

I am not sure what you are trying to prove; there is no difference in the technology they use. The difference is literally the physical size of the card. You will also note that majority of cameras cannot support that high of a write speed anyway.

$103.20 at Futu if you want it from an Aust store or need it quicker

    • Or grab 2 x 128GB for $115.20

      103.20 /200gb = .51c per GB
      115.20 /256gb = .45c per GB

In terms of the Nintendo Switch its unknown how the system functions with SD swap outs

      • It'll handle it, apparently some cases allow storage for multiple sd cards.

  • Crickey - I remover when they used to sell 1 gig sd cards

    • 10 years ago I was paying 70 bucks on sale for a SanDisk 2gb PSP memory card. I was stoked on that price at the time.

    • I remember when SD cards were the devil because they didn't work in anything, and you needed MMC cards.

EDIT: and no one seemed to know the difference when you asked for one or showed them.

Ah, Nokia Ngague, how I love thee…..

My 1991 xt286 has no need for this kind of space. Just give me a floppy disk with a sad porno gif file and I'm content.

  • I ended up getting a Samsung EVO 128GB for like $60 from shoppingsquare if you are on a budget for the Nintendo switch

    edit: for reference - http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_416338_Samsung_128GB_EVO_…

    Price was $58.95 + $3.95 for postage
