QLD Rego Has Increased by $50??

Just got my rego renewal (QLD 4 cyl) and shocked to see that it has gone up by over $50 since last year. Checked my payment history and it has gone from $650 to $670 and now to $720 last three years. Unbelievable!

Did anyone else read "unbeliveable" in the punchy voice from how I met your mother?

The rego component is about $352 for an average (4 cylinder) car. The remainder of the cost is for CTP insurance, which is basically paying compensation for all the people who get injured or killed in vehicle accidents each year.

In this day and age of compensation and litigation and expensive medical care, of course CTP is only going to keep climbing. We're basically paying for everyone's misfortunes.

But I think it's extremely unfair that someone who does 5,000km a year will have to pay as much as someone who does 50,000 km a year, and therefore has a 10 times higher likelihood of being in an accident.

I have two vehicles but only ever use one at a time. There should be a ruling where I only have to pay for one rego on the condition I never use both vehicles at the same time.

    • Add to that the Road Improvement levy, Stamp Duty, GST

      • Erm, there is no GST on vehicle rego, and stamp duty is only when you transfer the rego.

The $352 includes the road improvement levy.

Its what Labour do, no one liked Campbell but he did freeze rego when he was in.

    • My rego went up under Campbell

  • I have two vehicles but only ever use one at a time, so there should be a ruling where I only have to pay for one rego on the condition I never use both vehicles at the same time.

Creates a loop hole which could easily be exploited

    • That's true I didn't really think of how they would enforce it. I guess I'm just whinging that it's grossly unfair how much I have to pay for rego/CTP as someone who barely does 10,000 km a year in two vehicles.

Revolt, aim for 100,000kms in 2017.

        Do you need 2 vehicles?
Can you use a form of transport with a lower registration cost, such as a moped?
I am guessing if you really wanted to reduce you registration costs, there would be a way

        • +1

My 2nd vehicle is a small motorcycle but I'm gonna keep the car as sometimes I want to drive friends or not ride in the rain, or just transport bulky stuff.

Technically I'm 'saving' the environment and reducing emissions by driving less and having a small motorcycle on the side. But financially it seems I would be better off with just a car and no motorcycle.

I did think about revolting by leaving the car unregistered and risking a $800 fine on the odd occasion I use it, but my conscience wants to obey the law.

        • +2

@inherentchoice: You know you can get an unregistered vehicle permit to allow you to drive unregistered for up to 7 days at a time - it costs $31.30 per day + ctp.
          https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/buying/unregistered/uvp/ind…

Probably cheaper to pay annual rego.

        • @MITM: Hmm well that would mean it's cheaper to pay for individual permits if I only use it for less than 20 days of the year. But I think that's only for moving a vehicle rather than getting about town?

        • @inherentchoice:
I agreed as a bike rider and applauded you until………
It won't be your conscience that suffers when your unregistered and involved a crash with or without injuries. You will be up for every cent for ever, as you being illegally on the road are mostly responsible.

That's true I didn't really think of how they would enforce it.

Easy, just charge an amount for rego and ctp as a tax on fuel and get rid of rego and ctp.
That would also solve the problem of unregistered vehicles on the road with no ctp.
And for good measure include an amount for third party insurance so everyone must be insured for damage caused to other people's property and when you have an accident and you are not at fault you know that your damage is going to be covered.

        • It takes a brave politician to raise taxes on fuel. I would support them though.

          @inherentchoice:
Like with everything there would be winners and looser.
People that do not drive many km and/or have many cars would be winners. People that drive a lot would be loosers.
I believe it would be fairer because the risk for ctp and the use and wear and tear on the roads infrastructure would be on a user pays basis. The more you use the more you pay.

        • @maxi: *losers

        • @inherentchoice: Nah, it's looser. After you get hit with new taxes you feel like you've been scre….

        • @Euphemistic:
          You are probably right.
Knowing how the government operates first they will put a tax on fuel to cover rego and ctp.
Then a year later they will reintroduce some registration tax on cars…
So both winners and losers will be loosers!!!

        • Qld already pays the highest price for fuel.

        • @maxi:

The more you use the more you pay.

The problem with this is that it generally hurts lower income areas & benefits wealthier areas. For example, people who can't afford to live close to the city/work end up paying more than people who can afford to live in the city & have a much shorter commute. This is like a vicious cycle that would further exacerbate home ownership affordability issues.

Before anyone gets all offended, I personally wouldn't mind if this was the case. My husband & both live within walking distance to work, Woolies & our fav restaurants/take-away places. It's not uncommon for us to go weeks without using either of our 2 (registered and comprehensively insured) cars. My objection to this pricing system is purely academic for moral reasons. It's saving money at the expense of someone who needs it more than you…I know, not exactly the ozbargain way

Sold my car, works out cheaper for me to just uber around.

  • +2

It's only 7.5% increase, previous was 3%. Probably averaging out at inflation (with a bit more thrown in for insurance increases)

Lucky you aren't in NSW, cost me near $1k by the time you add CTP and rego together.

    • Just paid rego for a 6 cylinder car in Qld - $890.90 for 12 months including all the new costs. Don't worry - won't be long and we'll have caught up to NSW.

On another note, motorcycle rego in the NT for a 600CC+ engine size is $850 a year. If that isn't highway robbery then I don't know what is.

    • And for that money, you can go as fast as you can on the open roads.

      • New government got rid of it…

        Max is 130.

        • Govt's aren't happy with just the money, they want to stop the fun too.

      • Actually, no you can't legally. 100, 110, 130 max pending location on the Stuart. Open speed went last year.

    • Highway robbery?

      Oh thats easy.

Highway robbery is you stop to take a whizz and when you return to your motorbike there is a bunch of local kids running down the road with your fuel tank so they can sniff the petrol fumes.

Your panniers will be empty, your tires slashed, helmet no where to be seen and three or four of the older kids espousing "Hey bra, gis a hundy" in an unusually menacing accent and intonation.

  • SA 12 months

    4 cyl $734

    trailer $78
    8 cyl $956
    commercial (Rodeo) $1137
    moto $467

Insurance is designed to spread the cost of the incidents it covers across a larger population. You might be the greatest driver on the planet, but it appears that the "average" QLD motorist is killing or injuring more and more people. It's this "average" that is hurting the hip pocket. Would be nice if we could simply double the rego fees for anyone found responsible for causing an accident.

    • ikr. car insurance already works in this manner, why not rego

  • What cheap state to pay rego in??

    • +1

      Dream…state.

  • +1

Just thought I mention for those of you who are not aware of the $50 offer from Suncorp.

Type in your rego number and find out if you are eligible for the $50 gift card by switching to Suncorp CTP

    https://www.suncorp.com.au/insurance/ctp.html

    Woot Woot!

  • Only $50?

NSW and Victoria: HOLD MY BEER

  • +1

Whats laughable is the road improvement tax

If anything trip times have almost doubled on the bruce highway Southbound and M1 northbound during peak hour with more cars on the road and more jobs in Brisbane

Add to that more estates being opened up North of Brisbane and its just clogging the main roads, nothing is being improved, they spend 12 months installing "signs" on the bruce highway to control the speed which not one person cares about, you would think adding another lane each way would have been improvement

  • Had to also pay up $170 to renew license. Unbelievable!
