Is It Good to Buy iPhones from Kogan?

Hi everyone,

I just check Kogan.com, I'm not sure this site is Australian company or not. I went to see iPhone 7, they are selling iPhone 7 128G with a lot cheaper from Apple website, $999 instead of $1229 from Apple.
I would like to ask is there any one has issues when purchasing iPhones from Kogan.

I read a few threads about phones from Kogan, is that a grey import from HK. The thread I read is from 2013, is that the same now.

Thanks

    same…

    • Many people have good experience, many people not. I check the reputation from other websites, Kogan has roughly 4/5 ratings. I thought this is good :(

And theres one of these threads more than once a week, im sure there would have been a more recent thread that would have come up too lol

not sure about iphone (global warranty or not), but for me:

NEVER again (burnt three times) buy KOGAN BRANDED stuffs, even if the picture looks gorgeous and price is super low.

    • 2 weeks ago I bought a portable air conditioner from them, delivery fast and working great.

however, reading many threads has changed my mind :(

actually just bought my wife an iphone yesterday from them, the product is not shipped yet. Is there any chance to cancel? :(

      • read again i said kogan brand, you bought iphone so its all good. it is apple anyway

    • I totally agree with you.

I bought a Universal Laptop Charger that can't charge my laptop and they refuse to pay for the postage to return it.

"is it good to buy iPhones from Kogan?" It's good for Kogan. It may not be so great for you.

Bought Samsung note 2, a dew years ago and the Samsung s7 edge last year.

No issues, $300 cheaper than Australian retail.

In terms of the S7 Edge it was better to buy off Kogan as it had the Asian version, the better version. Difference in versions is type of ram and processor.

Forget getting the yanky version its a mess over there.

Do your research and figure out what you want in terms of iphone versions, if there is a difference.

Kogan as a whole has a made and continue to make a strong effort in terms of customer relations in order to build up their market share.

    • totally agree. but not with kogan branded items. samsung apple lg sony etc are fine

It is not good to buy iphones from anywhere

  • i've bought a few phones with kogan. had 1 mobile phone warranty with them and some other products. no problems at all. just need to be patient as it does take 2 weeks or maybe more for warranty processing. using a kogan S7 atm. i've done more damage to it then kogan has.

  • Yes will be grey import
Yes warranty through Kogan will be difficult/painful (can someone confirm you can take a grey import into the Apple store for issues though?)
    Yes iPhone will be genuine

Differences in grey imported iPhones? None

You will miss out on the 2nd year of your statutory warranty if you buy from Kogan.

Personally I love the apple buying experience and having the peace of mind knowing that if I ever run into any trouble, I can just rock up to an apple store and have it sorted.

    • I am curious. Why do you say that a person will miss out on their 2nd year of statutory warranty with Kogan? Apple say they only provide 1 year warranty but still honour the 2nd year. I'm just wondering if Kogan does the same thing.

I have never purchased anything from Kogan and don't intend to either… but I like to keep my options open just in case (unless there is a compelling reason to exclude a retailer).

      • I'm speaking from experience when I say that Kogan will not want to honour warranties additional to 1 year as this is a grey import and the laws of wherever it came from (HK, china, etc) apply to it.

Only Australian stock devices are protected by the Australian consumer laws. Apple Australia applies the statutory warranty only for these products. I know this for a fact - I once had 2 iPhones devices (one from Kogan and the other from OW) - apple confirmed the kogan one had only 1 year worldwide warranty while the OW one was covered for 2 years in Australia.

        • Thanks! I'll keep this in mind. I was under the impression that if a retailer had grey imports then they were required to be supported, as per Australian Consumer Law.

        • @shortblack9: a lot of times, these grey imports don't pay any gst. Esp if it is less than $1000 (the threshold)

        • @hashtagbargain: Yeah, I'm not so sure about the whole grey import/ no gst argument.

Steam/Valve got fined by ACCC for not complying with Australian Consumer Law warranty provisions… and it was for sale of "faulty" games that did not include GST.

That said, is it worth my time to argue with a retailer about warranty when I need the device to be working. If they're going to be resistant, I may as well spend my money elsewhere from the beginning.

          @hashtagbargain:

          Yes, that's normal.

  • I purchased an Ipad mini from them almost a year ago. No problems at all.

  • I have been burnt twice with Kogan on their "warrantees" - Their Help centre is basically a "Fob Off" centre - the first mobile that I had a problem with was a Motorola G5 purchased from Kogan for my wife about 9 months prior to the problem, which could not make or receive calls in Shopping Centres - After a long battle with the fob off Dept which was of no assistance, I bought her an iPhone6. I then had a Kogan Agora phone with a 5 year extended warranty & it died after 1.5 years as I could not get it to start up despite being fully charged, I tried to get assistance from the Fob Off Dept & they did not offer any help & eventually after a few days I got it to start up but as the Kogan phone or possibly Android is unreliable I have now got myself an iPnone6 - I now want to upgrade to an iPhone6 Plus & was attracted by the Kogan cheap price with a "warranty" from Kogan and realised that as Kogan's iPhone is a grey import I cant go to Apple in the unlikely event of a warranty claim (as iPhones rarely have problems), I will not buy from Kogan due to past experience
