great news with the bot reply, i pay 98 per month for your equivalent lite flexi + black 60.
plus i get more of a refund on the extras

        • Hi Tuzii,

Which plan are you on for NIB? I am with nib but can not get chiro for similar price to the flexi + black 60. I was going to change for that, but if you are on a better plan. I will change to yours.

        • @adn:
i have a old version of the basic plus plan and an extra.

That's because Nib are crap. They are the only health fund in Australia that operates on a "no gap allowed policy"…which while it sounds great it's actually the opposite of what you think. It basically means that if you're charged even a $1 out of pocket by your doctors (which most of the time there will be a gap) then Nib automatically nearly halves the rebate paid and guess who will have to make up the difference???? YOU!

So with Nib, unlike virtually every other health fund, if there IS a gap then you will have the highest out of pocket fees than with anyone else….and given Nib has some of the lowest rebates it's likely most doctors will not accept NiBs rebate as the full fee…thus more likely to gap you!

Is this offer available for members switching from Medibank?

    • Hey abc, thanks for getting in touch with us. You're welcome to consider this offer if you sign up to ahm on an eligible product - even if you're switching from another health fund :)

Hi Janete, Have you got anything for us existing members who are currently paying $415/month and from 1st of April $440/month? Thank you

        • You're better off with Bupa's ultimate cover. $320/m i think. 100% extras

I'm contemplating getting it because they cover 100% laser eye surgery, clinically necessary cosmetic surgery, and IVF.

Just waiting for Bupa to run a similar promotion then I'll switch!

Shouldn't health insurance 'deals' be banned from ozbargain? It's all a bloody ripoff!

    • +2

Agree. And this is not a bargain but rather an extension of their advertising. A bargain would be if the op could show that this is the best value health insurance even if limited to a particular group. As others have pointed out there's better options out there.

Check http://www.privatehealth.gov.au for the best deal for yourself and only then see if iSelect or the likes have a deal going that's ACTUALLY better than what you can find through the government comparison site.

      • Exactly this, there is no "deal" or "bargain" or anything approaching that, just blatant advertising.

  • waiting period applies if switching from other health fund for Extras only?

    • Hi ishe, when switching health funds, we will recognise the waiting periods you have served for comparable benefits.
We can organise the transfer for you, along with refunds they have taken or are due to be taken during the transfer process.

As you have Extras only, if you are looking at a Hospital and Extras cover - there will be waiting periods for the Hospital component.
Depending on what Extras you have currently, you may or may not have waiting periods there. We can confirm that for you with the transfer certificate that we receive from your current health fund.

Also as the offer is waiving the 2 and 6 month Extras waiting periods, you will not have to worry about those.

  • Time and time again, AHM increase premiums over the government approved increases.

They also have comparatively low limits compared to other health insurance companies.

They are owned by Medibank and I guess follow their daddy's footsteps. Medibank has been massively decreasing in quality over the last few years in their aggressive pursuit of profits and privatisation. Now their rebates paid are among the lowest (hence higher out of pocket). For example Medibank is one of the few funds where in Melbourne's Epworth hospitals you are going to pay for out of pocket costs not just for doctors but even for radiology and pathology tests! That doesn't apply to BUPA or any of the AHSA funds.

      • My family is with Medibank and so ready to jump to another fund if one is better.

        HCF more expensive
NIB poor claim, lack shopfront customer service
        BUPA similar premium
Other funds - don't know them and worry going under

        Find me a bargain please

        • +1

Check out any of the AHSA listed health funds. There are many there that are good and very member focused rather than profit driven. They have often good cover and pay good rebates.

Just switched away from ahm to HIF for hospital and Queensland Country Health Fund for extras (make sure you use $50 promo codes). Did a whole bunch of research on Choice, comparethemarket and iSelect.

ahm are charging well over competitors for inferior coverage, even including these bonuses.

    • I went to HIF last year, paid up front (around $900) for the whole year for singles hospital + mid tier extra cover, plus got a $50 EFT voucher. I plan to ring up this year and ask what it will do to keep me - ie send another voucher - probably won't work as others have suggested but worth a shot.

  • Can one of the associated reps extend this offer? I literally started with AHM last this month.

    • +1

You should have a cooling off period with them so worth mentioning that when you contact them about it.

  • Slugged us nearly 9% increase, called them, refused any discount or offers, so we switched.
Then of course they call and offer a free month. Too late mate
Be prepared to switch again after a year

  • More expensive than same level cover from BUPA.

  • +1

Any incentive to stay with AHM for current members? There's a lot of good deals to switch at the moment and pretty much no rewards for staying.

    • I'm interested is deals for current members, looking to switch at the end of the month.

  • I have to agree with some of the others here.

Health insurance is the biggest scam that has been pulled on the Australian public in the past decade. Just another example of legalised corruption endorsed by government to line the pockets of individuals at the expense of tax payers.

The NBN downgrade is another example of them taking us for a ride while laughing all the way to the bank. We've been set back a whole generation of technological infrastructure and paying through the nose for it with more BS to come. If people weren't so distracted by the size of their real estate portfolios, we'd be throwing pollies off the balconies of all the empty one bedroom apartments.

If we weren't forced to take out these fraudulent policies to earn a tax break, this "deal" would have been negged to the nether regions of Turnbullsh*t's buttcrack.

    Down with health insurance scams!

  • Hi OP. Does credit card applies for direct debit??

    • Hi chowmanly, great question.
Yes you can use a Credit Card payment (either MasterCard or Visa) to set up your Direct Debit to be eligible for the offer.
Just so you are aware though, Credit Card payments do have a 0.25% surcharge applied, but you can set up a Direct Debit using a Bank Account, which is fee free :)

      Hope this helps out.

      • I am aware of the 0.25% surcharge. so does that mean I can apply for the credit card option and still get the flybuys points + 1 month free?

        • Oh perfect.
That is correct, you can apply for the Hospital and Extras cover and choose to set up the Direct Debit with your Credit card. That will make you eligible for the:
          - Flybuys points
          - One Month free
          - 2 and 6 month waiting period waiver on the Extras

  • I think the one month free is only if you take hospital + extra though

  • I'm with Australian Unity and they seem to still be cheaper than AHM, Medibank, BUPA, HCF (they're the only ones I've looked at so far).
Unfortunately I need to have cover for hip replacements as my wife will need one in the next few years - though at this ridiculous premium level, it is getting more viable to simply become self-insured as we're effectively now paying for a hip-replacement in premiums every 4-5 years…and you just know you can always talk the price down if you say you have no insurance! I had a hernia repair once with no insurance and it cost me less going private than a subsequent hernia repair was done with private health insurance!

My criteria for a switch is free months of cover because this is effectively hundreds of $$$ and the fly-buys points are pretty good too. But with AHM's premium being higher, it would only be a matter of time before I'd be looking for the next jump for freebies.

The rebates on extras is yet another black-box. There is little to no transparency on who charges what or what the health fund is going to refund you. There's the hope…but expect to get screwed.

As soon as my wife has had her hip replacement…I'll be either scaling back the health insurance to the bones or dumping it altogether.
