Product Description

The glitz, glamour, and unbridled decadence of the 80s are back in Yakuza 0.

A prequel to the long-running series set in Japan's criminal underworld, this entry introduces mainstay protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and series regular Goro Majima as they fight like hell through Tokyo and Osaka in their climb through the yakuza ranks. Along the way, players can interact with all the vices 1988's Japan had to offer: from discos and hostess clubs to classic SEGA arcades, there are tons of distractions to pursue in the richly detailed, neon-lit world.

At its heart, Yakuza 0 is a classic 3D brawler, where players roaming the streets of Tokyo or Osaka will encounter all manners of goons, thugs, hoodlums, and lowlifes to beat up. Featuring an engaging combat system allowing players to switch between 3 different fighting styles instantaneously, Yakuza 0 gives players fluid, free-flowing fights that are easily learned and a joy to master. Take combat up a notch by using environmental objects such as bicycles, sign posts, and car doors for bone-crunching combos and savage take-downs.

A HARD BOILED CRIME DRAMA
The story follows Kazuma Kiryu as a junior yakuza member who finds himself in a world of trouble when a simple debt collection goes wrong and his mark winds up murdered. Meanwhile, Goro Majima is living a "normal" life as the proprieter of a cabaret club, but is doing whatever it takes to rejoin the yakuza. What that entails isn't exactly easy…

FIGHT LIKE HELL
Kiryu and Majima can each switch between 3 brutal hand-to-hand combat styles on the fly to creat the most fluid beatdowns ever experienced in a Yakuza game. Use Heat Actions to trigger violent special attacks, or pick up environmental objects to whale on enemies!

TWO VIBRANT CITIES COMES TO LIFE
Kiryu and Majima will find themselves interacting with many of the colorful denizens of Tokyo and Osaka in some of the most absurdly comedic and heartwarming tales from the red light district. From helping a budding S&M dominatrix learn her profession to ensuring a street performer can make it to the bathroom in time, there are 100 incredible stories to discover.

THE FINEST PURSUITS 1980s JAPAN HAS TO OFFER
One of the main features the Yakuza series has to offer is being able to relax with the various entertainment options around Japan, and Yakuza 0 has more than ever. Players can go to hostess and telephone clubs for some female companionship, disco halls and pocket car races to blow of some steam, hit up the CLUB SEGA Arcades for classic 80s video games, and much, much more!

Bought it during the Target deal. On release.

Lasted me a good full month. Fantastic bloody game, very very entertaining if you go out of your way to do all the substories.

And an even better price, great.

Agreed, beat it just the other day, in time for Zelda tonight.

      • Was trying to make it last that long too, but finished it a week early. Whoops. Ah well, 4 more hours until Zelda.

Yup like a great serious tv series with amazingly crazy sidequests/minigames.

  • I didn't think much of how the facial animations have dipped in quality since the PS3 games, but then I found myself playing it for most of the night anyway. Well worth the purchase. The game itself looks stunning if you can put up with a few iffy NPC models and wonky facial animations.

    • I thought the facial detail and animation was great. But it really made the ol' sausage fingers stick out. All that effort for the faces and none in the hands!

  • So from what i gather, the open world in this game is better then the campaign? Any word on that?

The plot is very enjoyable. Very heavy. Very cutscene heavy.

The substories vary wildly but most are very lighthearted and amusing. It's good to have a bit of both.

      • Hmmm, sounds like a mix.

I hope its better then GTA, and less of Sleeping Dogs doing GTA?

Combat is better in Yakuza right?

        • Man…Sleeping Dogs is so bloody good.

Well, there's no vehicles or anything. So it's kinda hard to compare to GTA.

But hand to hand combat and weaponry is like Sleeping Dogs. But even more varied and upgradeable.

In any case, it's the most fun I've had with a game in quite some time. (Keep in mind I disliked the newest GTA so much I didn't even bother finishing it. Sleeping Dogs I have beaten multiple times though.)

        • @Selenium: More varied and upgradable? Hmmmm

          That sounds good.

I think i might need to check it out then, it looked a bit better.

An 80s open world game that feels a bit different to GTA, sounds like it could be fun.

@BNN: If you have (or can be bothered to make) a Japanese PSN account, there's a free demo available if you're on the fence.

But yeah, 80s Japan is quite enjoyable. The streets are based on places I've been, but they're a lot less gaudy and yakuza-filled these days, haha.

It's a nice game to get immersed in. Lights off, 5.1 sound on, listening to the chatter.

        • @Selenium: is this discrete (aka real) surround or dolby digital (aka fake) surround? Can my PS3 do this?

        • @homersyd: Buggered if I know. Surround is surround to me.

Not at all. The story sequences are the best fights in the game and the story in the Yakuza games (0 in particular) is really good. It's up there with Yakuza films from Takashi Miike and Takeshi Kitano. The open world stuff is more over the top, as are the substories. There's lots of stuff to do from Karaoke, gambling, women wrestling, bowling, pool, darts, batting centre, watching "erotic" videos, skill testers and even fully fledged arcade games like Outrun and Space Harrier. The core gameplay is a 3D brawler or beat 'em up.

      • Cool. I hope the combat is better then Sleeping Dogs, i like that description "3d Brawler".

        • +1

It's way better. My only issue is that it can somewhat easy once you unlock more abilities. I'd recommend starting on hard if you're familiar with 3d brawlers. They changed how the combat worked from Zero (and Ishin). You now have three "stances" that completely change your battle style, one is a standard brawler type, another lets you dodge quickly and land fast hits and the last one is a sort of tank where you move slow but hit hard. On top of that there's another character who has three totally separate combat styles, so six in total. It's really varied. In the older games you only had one combat style per character, although Yakuza 4 and 5 let you play as 4+ characters whereas 0 only lets you play as 2.

          @Yuri Lowell: Sounds really good.

The main story is like a great tv series, quite serious and well written. The side quests/mini games (if they can be called that, they are pretty much games in themselves) are amazingly crazy.

      • Im not too big on story, but if its set in the 80s, i can see myself enjoying it.

Fun side quests are important for these games, so that sounds like a major plus, the footage i've seen looked crazy.

Everyone seems to rave about this game but I looked up a few gameplay videos and it doesn't look that great to me. Someone convince me haha!

    • +5

      it's good

  • How does this compare with sleeping dogs?

    • Thats what i wonder, wasnt into Sleeping Dogs but this open world looks better,

if the combat is better i'll have to check it out at some point.

    • +1

Similar combat and tone. That's about it.

But if you enjoyed the melee combat in SD, Yakuza's should be quite fun for you too. Three fighting styles for both characters (and a secret, final style for each) that are upgradeable.

    • You can't drive cars. It's open world but you can only walk around. It's most similar to Shenmue.

  • Bought it. Had $5 we miss you voucher too

  • absolutely awesome series (I havent played this one yet). But this is the spiritual successor to Shenmue in my books… equally as good but in different ways
