Car Lock Symbol/Yellow Engine Light

Hey all

Another problematic Holden Cruze question (sorry)
Tonight I tried to start my car and then a car with a lock appeared on my dashboard, followed by the yellow engine logo.

I've done some research and apparently it's because the engine can't read the remote/key. Due to anti theft etc

When I tried locking the door, it wouldn't lock. I'm left to assume it's because the battery is dead.

Could someone please clarify this info?

  • What does the manual say?

    • Nothing on it, from what I've seen

      • Sorry for being a prick but look again. If you are too lazy google might bring up a PDF version. The one I found had all of the lights identified.

        Try your spare key?

        • Sorry yeah I found the info. No spare key given to me unfortunately

  • Really serves you right for buying a Cruze

    • This comment isn't neccesary. I'm asking for help, not your negative feedback. Cheers

Don't know why I'm getting negative votes????

  • Is the first symbol:

Is the yellow light immediately below the battery light?
It is an EML or Engine Management Light.

    • Yeah I get that symbol turned on

      • Is the Key the Original Key, good condition or damaged…

Try a spare Key if you have another.

        • It's the original. I didn't receive a spare key when buying the car second hand.

I assumed it might've been the remote battery

@itschrisraymond: the battery in the key has nothing to do with starting. That requires confirmation of the transponder chip inside the remote housing. If you have dropped the key it may have broken and therefor the signal is incorrect. If you have any other car keys or remotes on your key ring take them off as the immobiliser may be getting a mixed signal. Otherwise you may need to see a master locksmith( not me minit)

          @Test Tickles:

Actually the reason was the battery. As soon as I replaced, the engine started

        • @itschrisraymond: coincidence, the battery has nothing to do with starting the car. The key reader reads the chip inside the key. The remote sends a signal to lock/unlock.
' The system is automatically disarmed when the vehicle is started with the correct key. The key uses a transponder that matches an immobilizer control unit in the vehicle and automatically disarms the system. Only an authorized key starts the vehicle. The vehicle may not start if the key is damaged.'
          Also
' If the engine does not start and the security light stays on, there is a
problem with the system. Turn the ignition off and try again.'
So definitely not the battery, possibly interference of some sort.
(I am a mechanic with 20+ years experience and excerpts above taken from Cruze manual)
If I were you I would get another key sooner rather than later.

        • @Test Tickles:

Would this mean a new key-cut is to be made?

        • @itschrisraymond:
Yes, a new complete key and remote, might be a bit pricey but less expensive than missing a day at work cause your car wouldn't start ;)
Could also be the key reader, maybe a visit to a Holden dealer or auto sparky with a dealer level scanner would be the best port of call, especially if lights are staying on after starting. But get it checked soon as the car may reset after 10-20 starts with no error so you may not know where to start until it happens again.

  • I guess, it's because of the battery

    • It is indeed the battery lol. Car started up again but the lock symbol still appears

Take it to Holden to fix.
