Gold Coast trip for Asian parents

Hey OzBargain

I'm heading to the Gold Coast this weekend with my family - there are 6 of us including my mum and dad. They've never been to the Gold Coast but it's always been a dream of theirs to go so I bought tickets for everyone for Christmas (with a Jetstar deal from OzB of course).

Can you guys give some recommendations of good restaurants and/or tourist attractions? My main problem is that my parents will freak out if I take them to a "fancy" restaurant where the mains are like $40 or $50 because they're very frugal and also they don't really get the whole fine dining thing, they like quality food and large quantities but not necessarily fancy if that makes sense. I haven't been to Qld in years so I have no idea what's good, also most of the highly rated things on tripadvisor, etc, are fine dining/super expensive. (Would it be reasonable to say I want to pay around $300 a meal for 6 people?) Also I will be paying for most of the trip so if I'm not totally broke at the end of it, that would also be great…

Also any ideas for what to do? Maybe like the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary? Is that any good? I know they're gonna want to spend a night at the casino lol.

Anyway, thanks in advance for helping me figure out this trip for my parents!

Take them to a couple of surf clubs. They're good value and have a view of the beach.

Take them up the Q1 tower at dusk so they can see all the Gold Coast and stay there while it turns night. There's a cafe/ bar so you can have a drink or coffee if you want.

Casino night, you can eat in Broadbeach somewhere and then go over to the casino or dine at Vigo upstairs in the casino, prices are OK there.

Maybe look into buying a couple of groupons/scoopons for local restaurants? Check the reviews first obviously, but your parents might be happier knowing you got a good deal.

  • Take them for a walk around the boat club in the Versace Hotel, and while there, grab some Fish 'n Chups from Pete's Market.
You can also go for a walk/bike ride around the Spit to where people go hang around, the little "dog beach", and Sand Pumping Jetty.

It's all located near Sea World… so if you're going there and time is limited, its a great detour.
(Sidenote: Jet Ski hire is also located near Sea World, and there's usual discounts from Adrenaline)

Jupiters has a great buffet which sounds like it may suit your family's tastes. The price varies depending on the night you go, it's all on their website. If you stop by the concierge desk on your way to the buffet queue (unfortunately you have to line up to get in - no pre-bookings…it can be busy, especially if there's a show on that night) you can pick up one of those tourist booklets (it's the one that's landscape orientation - can't remember the name but there aren't that many) and they have a 20% off voucher in them. That brings the price down. If the buffet is not your style they also have a lovely looking restaurant/cafe that they've just recently opened. Lovely atmosphere, haven't tried the food yet though. Between all the restaurants there you'd probably find somewhere that suited your tastes and budget.

As regards cheap things to do - Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary does lorikeet feeding twice a day (8am and 4.30pm I think? Check their website to be sure) and it only costs a gold coin donation to get a feeding tray to hold up. You don't actually have to enter the park to do the feeding, it is in an area out the front, before the ticket gates. So it makes a great, low cost activity. As regards going in…haven't actually done it in years so can't say what it's like.

There are some beautiful spots around. If we have been to Currumbin to feed the birds we usually pop over to Tallebudgera or Palm Beach and enjoy the inlets and short bush walks around those places.

Pacific Fair has just been totally revamped and is interesting to walk around. It's next to Jupiters. Robina is another huge shopping centre and Harbour Town is the outlets, if they are after some shopping time. There are night markets at the beachfront at Surfers Paradise on a couple of nights a week. Q1 has a viewing platform but I think it's quite dear to go up for what it is. We get up there for free as part of our Dreamworld passes so pop up for a quick look but never stay more than 15 min. Other than that we just tend to do kid-orientated stuff (playgrounds, beaches and theme parks) so can't think of anything else much to suggest.

Take them up Tamborine Mountain - some great cafes on Main Street in North Tamborine, Spice of Life, Mountain Brew, plus nice views from various spots. Canungra Valley lookout is a great example. And they will like Gallery Walk (I've linked to the German Clock shop which is about halfway along Gallery Walk, definitely worth a visit!). I would've suggested the Polish Place for lunch, but sadly it burnt down recently (they've just started rebuilding it).

  • Take them to Burleigh surf club, buy one get one free etc

Scoop on for half price entry to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary $25

$3 Rump Steaks Sundays and Mondays at Waxys Irish Pub, $3 chicken schnitzels on a Wednesday.

All you can eat buffet every night at Southport Sharks worth a look too if they have big appetites. Catch the tram there.

UberEats, Deliveroo deliver locally too. Don't forget to use your vouchers etc if you haven't already.

Surfers RSL also very good value.

Check the shopadocket website for 2 for 1s on more expensive restaurants.

Go to the river end of Cavill Ave for $20 river cruises.

That's a few off the top of my head..

  • Maybe save it for a special night due to price, but for a high quality meal, try the Bazaar buffet at the QT Hotel. I ate there a few years ago and it was very nice. Lots of seafood. $72 per adult for dinner or $59 for lunch - a bit expensive I know, but all you can eat good quality food.

  • If you want cheap-ish asian food, take them to Sunnybank which will probably take you about an hour north from the GC. In fact, you could probably spend a good day or so visiting the free attractions in Brisbane (Science Museum, Brisbane Museum, South Bank, Ferry, etc). I assume you'll have a car though.

Also keep in mind that it can be pretty stinking hot around Xmas, so you probably want to include beaches/pool/water parks as much as possible.

    1. Bazaar buffet ($$$), Q1 ($$), Jupiters ($$$)(buffet or new restaurants, you may be able to get some free $$ for signing up)
    2. For lunch try Peters Fish market (next to versace hotel - as also recommended by other users)
    3. Hurricane on surfers is good for ribs and steak but can be pricey (next to hilton) - nice view too.
    4. Shopping @ harbour town and pacific fair (if you are near the casino)
  • Great replies like these is why
    Ozbargain is so good.
    😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

  • This place does a cheap lunch meal about $13 each which is filling and yum. http://www.littlemalaya.com.au/

Cascade Gardens is interesting to see the fruit bats. Remember to keep your mouth closed when you look up. Oh and thier crap/vomit sticks to your shoes, so take some plastic bags to put your feet on in the car. It has BBQ facilities also. http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/thegoldcoast/cascade-gardens…

Sunday night from 6-8pm is free to watch the fire twirlers and drummers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGtJsv6CNDU take a picnic blanket and food (wine in a thermos ;-) and enjoy a free night. Don't sit directly under trees or you'll be used as target practice by the lorrikeets.

Can't forget the markets http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/thegoldcoast/art-craft-marke… the Surfer Paradise beachfront ones at night are nice to walk through then have a wander through the mall and check out the street performers. Some of the small alleyway food shops are cheap to eat at, I like this one https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Hakataya+Ramen+Surfers+… but there are plenty more cheap ones in that spot too.

Macintosh Island just north of surfers is great to take some food and feed the birds, peacocks, ducks, pigeons. Nice park to wander around and the beach is opposite.

that should keep you busy for a while ;-)
