Lacto Free 100 Tablets. $5.75 (Normally $20+) @ Coles

140

These tablets are for people who are lactose intolerant, so they can drink or ear stuff with lactose in it without getting sick. Price is normally well over $20, and over $30 for other brands that do the same thing.

Not sure if it's nation wide or even other stores but both the Coles at Northcote plaza had the special. No idea why there's 2 Coles in the same shopping centre still.

Couldn't find a link in their online store so added a photo of the receipt. Also, couldn't remember the exact normal price but it's definitely above $20.

Would be great if people could check if it's available at other stores.

Mod: Seen at Northcote Plaza VIC, however comments suggest other stores also stock it (ticketed at a higher price but scanning at $5.75).

My girlfriend uses these and they work really well, hopefully the sale is nationwide so we can stock up.

    • Good to know, was going to ask that exact question :)

    • would you know if these things have any limitations or side effects? I found out that my kid is lactose intolerant around 18 months ago and I've never heard of these tablets

      • +1

Wouldn't really be able to help, I'm sure there are limitations and probably side effects for some people (like everything). She has one before a meal and can then tolerate practically any lactose, cheese, milk, ice cream, desserts etc.

Personally I'd say they're worth a shot even at retail (you get 100 tablets!), just try with a small dose of something first :)

There aren't any side effects as its not medication.

You just have to make sure you take enough tablets to digest the lactose.

The alternative is getting the liquid lacteeze stuff and putting that into your milk for example and then you can drink it like lactose free milk. Easier to buy lactose free milk though and doesn't work with things that aren't liquid.

But as always check with your doctor, I was lactose intolerant but no longer am, its important for people to look at their options.

So, lactose is the sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Lactose intolerance is caused by and insufficiency or non-function of the enzyme lactase. Lactase breaks down the lactose in to smaller a more absorbable structure, however, since this doesn't occur in LI patients the lactose proceeds further down the digestive tract where other bacteria metabolise it. the by-product of this metabolism being gas, bloating, and pain. The other undigested lactose drives water retention in the excrement driving diarrhea.

basically, these "lacto tablets" are supplementing the (normally) naturally occuring lactase in out gut. This aids in the breakdown of the lactose reducing the capacity for the above to occur.

Generally, these sort of tablets incur no side effects at their recommended dose and are safe to use. The only cause for concern should be if your child is allergic to any of the constituents.

        • Thanks all!

        • Correct. The lactase enzyme helps to convert lactose into galactose, ie processable.
Anyone got a picture of this product?
I've been buying Lactaid out of the USA.

        • very nicely explained :)

    • I normally use Lacteeze as they're easier to carry around and they're chewable. That said these come in a much more compact container and at this price it's well worth it!

They incredibly well for myself and another lactose intolerant person I know :)

    +1 for your logo YNWA

  • Awesome, I need to grab a few bottles. I've been using the Vitacost stuff but shipping is a pain.

Anyone know how much lactase is in a single tablet? FCC units or mg.

    • +1

Assuming this is the identical product

      • Ah, similar to Lacteeze then. Would need to take quite a few each time… oh well.

I wonder if this is a store-specific pricing error since it's discounted price is an outlier. Maybe someone forgot to add the 2 before the 5?

    • I'll be going to my local Coles this afternoon to check the price. Will report back.

    • +1

quick buy it all out and ebay them :D

    • +1

If it's an error it's not store specific, they are scanning at the same price in 2 Tasmanian stores I've been to. :)

    • Not an error. Lacto Free have a REDUCED TO CLEAR for $11.50 ticket but scan as $5.75 each at Coles, Ipswich QLD.

I resisted the strong urge to Broden them all, so ~10 left in the store for all the other lactose intolerant folks. I should be sorted for a couple of years now. :)

Damn, this is a great find. Only $5.75 to prevent 100 excessive visits to the loo. That's what I call a real bargain. Thank you OP!

    • +2

It probably prevents 200+ for me :D

  • No luck in SA (Rundle mall coles) :(

So these are Free but you have to pay $5.75 ?

    • only the lactose is free

      • -1

So can you get that separately?

        • when it's buy 1 get 1 free can you get the free one separately?

  • +3

At Kingston TAS they had a tag saying reduced to $11.50, but scanned at $5.75. I nabbed the last two, would have got more if I could have!

  • So, how many tablets do you need per ear?

Lets say I wanted to ear 1 cup of milk, will 1 suffice?

    • Beat me to it. I 'heard' you're pretty quick off the mark ;)

    • I hope those weren't the tablets Van Gogh was using

    • Lol. Someone has an ear fetish.

  • +1

Also bought the last two at Sandy Bay Coles :) No tag this time (not even a regular price, they were just shoved on the shelf) but still scanned at the cheap price.

The tag at the previous store said it was to be removed on the 20th, so I think that would be the expiry date, assuming it's not an error to be corrected.

Thanks for posting the deal OP, this is going to save me a ton of money. :)

  • Anyone got a picture of this product? Brand? Which aisle/section?

    • +2

Brand is in the post title, Lacto Free

jkcat already posted it, but here's the link again: http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/Buy/74750/Lacto-Free-100-…

I found them in the aisle with the rest of the medications, vitamins, etc.

    • Yep, took me ages to find them amongst all the vitamin bottles, laxatives and whatnot. I found them at the edge of a shelf next to the laxatives, which kinda makes sense as I think of these as anti-laxatives.

  • +1

Found these at Coles Gladesville. The tag said they were clearance for $11, but scanned up at $5.75.

They are short expiry though. Expires June 2017

    • anyone know how long after expiry the lactose tablets will still be effective?

  • I went to Coles Knox and the manager there said he'd never seen anything like it there.
