      insurance claim discussion

i cant find the other thread, but i'm holding out until i see a power board for this sort of price with insurance. As someone said in a previous thread i'd rather a company put their money with their mouth is rather than just an apologetic email when all my electrics die.

EDIT (12:49) - "Insurance provided by manufacturer " according to the COTD. I'll go have a look

EDIT2 (12:57) - cant see any evidence to support insurance… unless someone can correct me?

I'll hold off until the belkin $30 deal comes up again

3444 Joules is generally regarded as a lot - though the "Full 3 line protection" is a weird line to include as a bonus - considering it should protect ground, neutral and positive either way?

The "earthing detection" means a red lines comes on if your house is properly grounded - nothing amazing but a nice thing to include.

There's no "connected equipment warranty" as you get with other brands - you get $100,000 (average) on connected equipment if the power surge protector failed to protect your board, if anything, this would be worth the extra $20 to buy a Belkin one with protection from dell.

There's no mention of how fast it protects, the last one that came on said (greater than) 2 seconds, which is a baaaaad thing to add as a positive, as you're generally looking in the high ns/very low ms range here.

If anything, this would be more useful as a power board than a surge protector - if you're protecting expensive equipment, go get an expensive board (anything with a decent warranty on it that's willing to back it up) - when looking for a surge protector, look for Joules protected and time to protect (should be low milisecond(ms)/high nanosecond(ns) range).

MOD: (davo) "greater than" symbol is part of markdown extra and mucks up comments. have replaced symbol

      • Looks like ozbargain gobbled up half my reply.

I went on a bit more about how the speed it protects, the last one that was on COTD said "<2seconds" which is a bad thing - generally you are looking for high nanosecond/very low milisecond range.

      • How does the connected equipment warranty work? How do they know whether the damaged equipment was connected to the board or not?

        • assuming the device failed, the mov would be destroyed, or evidence or arcing within the power box???

        • i'm not too sure about it actually, I always assumed if you were in the right you could claim your warranty - which I guess I shouldn't assume these days ;)

These have been around for a long time (a couple of years that I know of). They seem to have recently been rebranded from Cabac to Huntkey. Or at least they’re the same under the plastic as the Cabac ones (all the specs are the same). If you search for ‘surge boards’ on Whirlpool these boards are recommended over the usually higher priced and lower spec’ed ones available. One point of difference is that they don’t have the attached equipment warranty that a lot have (and wriggle out of apparently). Although I have seen this board sold with one for about $80 in Officeworks.

Oh yes I got this from the last bargain posted here on Ozbargain but I don't know enough about power protectors to know what it does. I've been using it since then but I don't have much to say.

Except.. ok, so it has 8 powerpoints. 2x4 (2 rows, 4 columns).
And it's like a shopping mall carpark.
The top row, the front of the car faces the front of the cars on the bottom row. This is good because if you have any plugs which are longer than usual, you can put them opposite each other.. whereas if they were all facing the same way, you would not be able to and you'd have to put them beside each other.

  • thanks guys great feedback! quality OzB comments

  • For those wanting know what specs to look at for a s/p see: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/surge-protector7.htm

Personally I'd wait for Dick Smith to have a sale on s/p's as I've bought some good spec ones with warrantys for $30 (for 6 plug) to $40 (for 8 plug).

    • Almost ordered this board, as I do need one, but after reading your comment, I thought I would wait a bit. So do let us know when Dick Smith has them on sale!
