Where and How Can I Buy Ethyl Alcohol for Medical Use?

In Europe you can buy it even from grocery shops but in Australia it seems like taboo topic, even Google is no help.
I need it for use on skin so it has to be pure and without ANY chemicals.
It's used in hospitals also for acupuncture etc. etc. so where can I buy it?

salt and warm water. get it in there and give it a real good rub.

  • Yes, yes… "Medical use"

  • My company buys it. You need a pretty good reason to have it and a license to purchase.

sigmaaldrich.com is where we get it from.

    Not cheap

  • OP have you been to your GP or a dermatologist and said you used that product in Europe, what do I use here…??

  • +5

    I could use a drink.

ps. I represent all OzBargain users.

  • guys.
it's pretty common in other countries to use ethanol for a multitude of uses.
It's usually cheap to boot too, i comparison to the options.

can be used for disinfecting wounds, or surfaces, cleaning, removing stickers or gunky stuff, and for homemade drinks such as lemoncello, or adding to petrol (homemade E10)

only heard of end stage alcoholic with cirrhosis drinking the stuff.

Of course.. any decent nanny state such as ours would have to ban the stuff.. think of the children.

PS: metho is the equivalent, but they've added bittering agents to stop people from drinking it..
fair enough.. but it's actually ethanol.. hey should change the name to avoid confusing people.

    • So I can actually drink metho?

Cant be worse than Smirnoff, surely.

      • no..
        would taste like sh.t..
        won't kill you though

        • Yeah but I would be like, super entertaining for a while.

          Seems worth.

Alternatively, anyone know the boiling or of the bittering agent?

          I'm thinking home still.

        • @ozbjunkie:
i'm sure it could be done, but might as well make it from scratch.. beer and cider is easy as to make.
no point though, better, safer, less hassle ways of getting drunk.
Aldi has some excellent wines (for the price) for $5 why would you bother?

        • @elcheapoinoz:

          Because ozbargain!

Nah really I wouldn't bother, I'll stick to decent whiskey and lower levels of intoxication.

But would be a good trick anyway.

        • @ozbjunkie: No they thought of that. The additives are chosen so that it's impractical to separate by distillation, read on denatured alcohol. Far easier for you to produce ethanol by fermentation.

        • @ozbjunkie: having researched various forums, it is possible to get rid of the bittering agent, the problem is industrial spirit isn't going to be made to strict standards, and will have some contamination with methanol.

It is quite difficult to separate methanol with a home still, you will require many passes

    • There's an idea! Instead of home made E10, purchase E10 for your car, then distill/purify it at home. You'll get better fuel for your car and 10% will be available for 'rubbing on skin'

  • You can normally get it from a pharmacy. Just ask for alcohol to clean windows or like myself just ask for pure alcohol to make lemon cello.
It is pretty close to pure.

  • You can buy it from Jaycar. I bought some to clean the optical lenses in my cd and dvd players.

  • Just use hand sanitizer some can contain up to 90% alcohol.

The alcohol in your pictures is just metholated spirits by another name.

    Both are denatured alcohol.

(Technically your link is a translation into Italian)

Not for consumption, but perfectly fine as a disinfectant.

  • You're looking too closely at the specs pal, you're like the guy that insists on UM3 batteries and throws a spit when handed a pack of AAs.

Accept that different countries have different names, different ingredients; this is what you want buddy, It does the same thing.

      That's 345ml, Stubby size.

      • Stop you're making me thirsty

  • I used to use this for mozzie bites, I've given up trying to acquire some

Make friends with someone who has a reflux still. 90-95% purity with the cost of about $30 for 3-4 litres. That way if you get sick of putting it on your skin you can clean your insides out with it aswell. Win win really.

  • +2

Sounds like your trying to make DMT. lol

  • The answer is that you're not going to be able to obtain it legally. So search for an alternative for your skin. Perhaps discuss it with the doctor who prescribed the use of pure alcohol on your skin; he may have been that fake Sydney doctor that made the news recently. 😂

  • You can buy it from some pharmacies

There is a limit to how much a pharmacy can purchase before the government starts asking for records to justify its use.

Pharmacies selling direct to public is also a grey area legally so many will simply not sell it, however if you get a Dr to write a prescription for you, everyone is happy.

Isopropyl alcohol is similar, and often used for wounds, but its not the same

Apparently diggers brand methylated spirits does not contain added methanol, instead it has a bittering agent, so you could use that also, but no guarantee of purity

You don't need 90% +. That is simply wrong. The most effective % for killing bacteria is 70%. Above that it loses effectiveness.

    Edit:
I just saw your link, I think it is pretty obvious you don't want it to treat skin infections.
Get a Dr's script, ask them to write the largest qty possible that isn't extreme like 500ml. Pharmacies can order 90% ethanol quite easily. The other 10% is water, so it'snot going to ruin your recipe

    • There is no grey area. Supply of alcohol by pharmacies is illegal, the only time it will be given is when it is for legitimate medical use. A doctor will determine if your use is legitimate and you will need a prescription.
(see the part about supplying alcohol in link below)
      http://www.pharmacyboard.gov.au/documents/default.aspx?recor…

      • That's what I would call a grey area

"I need this alcohol to treat my wounds" is not the same as a pharmacy selling a home brewing kit.

Ethyl alcohol is not a scheduled drug. The only law being tested is the liquor license requirements.

  • This is probably what you are looking for:

    Great for medical use.

It sounds crazy that people in Australia think it is drinkable…You can make great beverages out of it, but it is a slow process and requires some knowledge. Check this out:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalewka

    • Dan Murphy's removed it from sale after a woman killed herself with it.

      http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/perth-teen…

"Perth teenager Nicole Bicknell died after drinking 95 per cent Polmos Spirytus Rektyfikowany"

We can't have some nice things in this country as there is always the fringe case that will abuse it and spoil the party for everyone else.

I don't know how New Zealand does it. It's legal to distill your own ethanol there, and you can even grow tobacco for personal consumption. http://wiki.homedistiller.org/index.php/Legality#New_Zealand

The most amusing thing is rectified spirit is produced for well under $1 per litre, but sold retail for $140/L.

  • I think Spirytus Rektyfinkowany is good for disinfection, but used too often may make your skin very dry and sensitive.
I will recommend Hydrogen Peroxide for cuts or wounds - there is nothing better than that! Especially in this humid / dump weather - all the cuts heal fast.

  • If it's for topical use, why don't you use isopropyl alcohol?

  • Pure alcohol or Everclear is now available in small quantities. Search the internet to find it in Australia.
