Kogan 16" TV with PVR, Media Player, Built in DVD, Portable 12 Volt Power (Car, Boat Caravan), VESA Mounting - $139 Delivered

60

Tiny little TV with presumably mediocre picture quality and sound, but gosh darn it if it isn't super value then I don't know what is! Digital clock radios can cost more than this, and I would rather put this on my bed side table than one of those. And if you don't like it, 14 days to return hassle free. What's not to like?

  • Probably more suitable for caravans and boats. Not sure about cars.
I have a PC in my bedroom with a 27-inch Dell monitor, this TV will look tiny in comparison.

    • In my bedroom I have a 27"………. never mind

      • You have a horse in your bedroom? :p

  • +1

I bought the 24 inch 12 mths ago - terrible viewing angles, esp vertical. Needs to be at eye level to be watchable.

    • Supported by specs: Viewable Angle 90° x 60°

You will need to view almost straight on (30° above or below horizontal will be unviewable), but with a screen this small, I think most will sit straight in front of it. Can't imagine useful for more than 1 person to view.

Advantage of this unit is mainly in 12V power.

      • Thanks for the specs.

When we're in our camper trailer you have to juggle where the antenna socket is, where the 12V outlet is, the subsequent leads and also a flat area to place the TV on. Poor viewing angles make this all a challenge.

        • Yes, used to live off grid for years with tiny (CRT) TV (hills behind Gold Coast overlooking ocean). At least I didn't have a viewing angle issue with CRT.

Viewing angles with these screens can be extremely annoying for single viewer & likely to cause fights for more viewers. People who have never experienced the problem would not expect such a problem with viewing angels - so a helpful comment😯

Even in bed, simply moving slightly may mean losing the vision. Probably not recommended for couples! Luckily the screen is so small, you just move the TV 📺

  • 📺 Bedroom TV for a few dollars😯
Easy enough to pick up old LCD monitor for almost nothing, add set top box - full HD with HDMI & maybe USB media player are best (people throw these out - neighbours just gave me one), & cheap powered (PC) speakers - making a reasonable TV. Can't get cheaper than that.

    📺 $1 TV or my $11 1 1TB twin tuner PVR TV😀
Bedroom TV I set up had an old Samsung LCD monitor with VESA mounting (thrown out by neighbour). Connected to a 1TB twin tuner Panasonic PVR with USB media player for $10 new (when DS was closing down), using a HDMI to VGA adapter from Chinese supplier for free (normally a few $). (But could have used a thrown out FHD set top box - with HDMI.) Added $1 PC speakers from Woolies clearance deal (good enough sound, as TV needs to be close to view small screen).

📺 $169 1TB twin tuner PVR TV with bigger, better screen & sound 📺
Upgraded with a new 24" Samsung monitor for $130 which gives a better viewing experience (full HD & HDMI input). Improved sound with a heavily discounted $29 Target Bluetooth iPhone speaker with subwoofer & remote. Can add DVD player to that set up, but I rarely use DVD these days.

    • I found a 24" LCD , blue ray player, pc speakers and also a digital tuner and indoor antenna from side streets and it's now part of my bedroom entertainment system. I did have to buy an hdmi cable though

      • Yes - added to a monitor with HDMI input, just need HDMI cable. If monitor doesn't have speakers, cheap or scrounged amplified PC speakers work ok plugged into set top box.

But no remote - universal or programmable Harmony remote will work, but would add to already expensive used unit.

These sold for around that price new when DS failed. eg$29 in 2014 (I bought the new Panasonic 1TB twin tuner unit for $10 then.) Search up old DS deals here, Whirlpool forums, etc for opinions & specs for video formats using USB media player. Can't remember if these are full HD.

Sometimes find cheap ones in stores as not really wanted any more. A 1 minute search found BigW sell a similar new unit with USB recording & remote for $28.

People throw out similar set top boxes (seen occasionally on Freecycle). Check council kerbside clean ups or better - ask around. Post a wanted ad on Gumtree. I've given away a few unwanted ones.

It's about the cheapest TV if you can't find a free or cheap TV from same sources.

    • The image quality will be similar to a 15.6" laptop with TN panel. That is to be expected at this price. Bigger than 16" is kind of too big for a bedside table TV for my needs (would have prefered 8" - those are $200+ on ebay), and all those extra add ons like set top box and speakers will just clutter the whole place up and look ugly. I actually want the whole thing to be about the size of a clock radio - something to listen to TV in bed, so the viewing angle isn't even on my radar. It could have the worst viewing angle (and probably does, if my 15.6" laptop's screen is anything to go by) but that's fine because I'm not after image quality, just a bedside "thing" to listen to and briefly see a picture to fend off boredom :) Actually I would prefer if the screen could be turned off altogether and just listen to the sound :)

For any kind of actual viewing I cannot tolerate VA or TN panel viewing angles at all - what they do to skin tones is unacceptable to me, and I've never seen a VA/TN panel with acceptable view angles (some claim they exist in a rare form when they are actually manufactured by Samsung - but I've never seen one, and impossible to get with panel lotteries anyway). Waiting for OLED prices to come down a wee bit more and then it's bye bye plasma :)
