Has anyone flown Philippine Air for long haul flights? Thinking about booking but not sure what their service is like.

Depends what aspect you're talking about. For food and number of flight attendants they are much the same as any other full service airline. As to the plane itself it can be a bit hit and miss because while most of their planes are pretty new, they are still flying 15-year old A340s on some routes with overhead TVs in Economy class.

On their newer A330s and A321s rather than seatback IFE they offer USB power with inflight wifi which can be used for internet access (for a fee) and free streaming moves and TV etc - you need to bring your own device. Their Boeing 777 planes (which would be used on the MNL - YVR leg) have Panasonic seatback IFE in all classes just like Qantas etc.

      • Thanks, was also curious about the likelihood of cancellations etc but I suppose long haul flights rarely get cancelled.

I flew with them about 8 months ago - no complaints. Everything was as you would expect and certainly no better or worse than Qantas across the board. Flight was on time, but that's a sample of 1.

        • As I said, most of their fleet is pretty new so I wouldn't expect any more cancellations than any other full service airline. MNL is pretty famous for delays though, not such a big deal if you're connecting through on a long haul flight. PAL have a terminal all to themselves at MNL which helps.

  • Hah. Just found this. "Vancouver: Annual Weather Averages. August is the hottest month in Vancouver with an average temperature of 18°C (64°F) and the coldest is January at 4°C (38°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 13 in July. The wettest month is November with an average of 200mm of rain."

Raining and cold… hmmm maybe not :/

November might be rough but September might be passable. Vancouver is beautiful. Went there last year in June (probably the best time to go). Saw loads of whales (killer whales, humpback) up close and bald eagles (Wild Whales). Lots of great walks around the city/parks (Stanley Park). Decent coffee and food/drink scene that rivals Melbourne. The Canadian dollar makes things a bit cheaper and Seattle is 3 or so hours away which is another great city to check out (not cheap though).

  • Anyone know a good deal over the christmas and new years break?

  • Hrm I paid double to fly AirNZ… but save myself half the flight time, and fly in peak season (August). I'm happy with my choice.
