Most dogs (even Staffies & Great Danes) getting 4 - 6 months chew time from their antlers. This makes them a very cost effective chew treat. The majority of our antlers come directly from our farm in the Hunter Valley but we have recently started sourcing premium antler from fellow deer farmers to keep up with demand. • What sort of equivalent product is there for cats. I've tried chicken necks and they just aren't interested.

  • with the large pieces roughly how big are they, our dogs one is getting kind of small and the goat horn we got the other day (with marrow) doesnt look like it will last as long

  • I'll give one a shot. No expecting miracles the dog already has a preference for non dog stuff to chew.

Here I am thinking I could get real antlers to put on my dog to make him look like a reindeer!

  • what happens to the rest of the deer?

They grow another set, each year, until they die naturally or due to lead poison. Some lucky ones work for Santa.

    • Likely sold as very tasty venison. Do you know of any other reason for maintaining a deer farm?

      • Santa Claus.

  • Most dogs (even Staffies & Great Danes) getting 4 - 6 months chew time from their antlers.

I'd be incredibly impressed if that were the case, my American Staffordshire has jaws of steel and even a large knuckle bone only lasts a couple of weeks.

    • my akita is still working through his original one months later. they will basically go for one end and grind through it over time

and he eats a raw pork . turkey neck piece (300grams) daily in a few mins

Sorry do not buy these for any dog, they might be the mode now, but they can break the dog's teeth. These are just too hard for dogs teeth. There is heaps of information on the net about these just google deer antler dog chews problems Please folks your dog does not need these for example give this to any breed that is brachycephalic and you are asking for problems. Business is business making money out of us the chumps. I see in the long term these will disappear from the pet store shelves. Just do not get caught up in the hype and risk your dog breaking a tooth or worst getting an abdominal obstruction. So you know my Bona Fides I am a dog trainer who comes from a Zoology background with over 30 years in the Pet Food Industry. You love your dog right so take the time to read what a world class vet has to say about antler chews.

Excessively hard chew toys are a common cause of broken teeth in dogs. A broken tooth is extremely painful and can sometimes become abscessed. I believe that hard plastic or nylon chews, sterilized bones, cow hooves and antlers are too hard to be safe for most dogs. Rule of paw: don’t buy any chew toy that you wouldn’t want to be whacked in the knee with.

Instead, I recommend buying chew toys that have some flexibility or “give” to them, even for large, powerful dogs. Give big-time chewers large toys that don’t fit all the way in the mouth. It’s better to replace chew toys more frequently than it is to have to spend hundreds of dollars to have your veterinarian repair or remove a broken tooth. Hard chews such as deer antlers can also cause bleeding in the mouth or internally if they splinter and blockages if swallowed, two more reasons to avoid them.
