'Upgrading' Credit Card with Bank Of Melbourne to Take Advantage of Offer - Experiences?

Hi Ozbargainers,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with 'upgrading' from one card to another card within the same financial institution to take advantage of '0% balance transfer offers' without it being treated as a new application and affecting credit score. Ie, as it's utilising existing credit limit, no credit check is made.

In my situation the bank in question is Bank of Melbourne.
1. I currently have a no annual fee card with a 6k limit (0 balance owing).
2. BOM is offering 0% for 12 months on balance transfers on entire range of cards.
3. BOM also offers 'first year $0 fee' on a new card for existing customers.

Is it possible to request a change of card and take advantage of the BT offer without it being a new ding on credit score?
I would be transferring from another card not with BOM.
For those concerned, i'm not in financial distress. All balances currently on 0% offers, so not paying any interest and I could pay off all balances tomorrow. Just looking at potential hacks. Anyone had any experience/success with doing this?

    From what you have provided

must be an existing Bank of Melbourne customer that applies for a new Vertigo, Vertigo Platinum, Amplify, Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card

Would appear that BOM offer is to get existing customers to apply for a new card. Therefore this would incur a credit check.

  • I wouldn't be too worried about a credit enquiry from your existing bank.

  • Just fake your death. Easy way, best way.

    • No need to… Turns out Bank Of Melbourne are allowing existing customers to also take out the balance transfer on an existing card.

*Can I transfer balances if I have an existing Bank of Melbourne credit card?
Yes. Existing Bank of Melbourne credit card customers can request a balance transfer from another store, charge or non-Bank of Melbourne credit card to their existing Bank of Melbourne credit card account. Balance(s) transferred will be at the special balance transfer rate of 0% p.a. for 12 months. Rate then switches to variable purchase rate.

You can transfer up to two balances from another store or credit card to your Bank of Melbourne credit card provided you meet the minimum requirements for balance transfers.

To apply to transfer a balance to your existing Bank of Melbourne credit card, simply complete the balance transfer request form and send it back to us.

You can also request a balance transfer through Internet Banking. Once logged in, select "Transfer & payments" and then select "Pay out a credit card held with another bank." You can also arrange this over the phone by calling 13 22 66.*

The online form didn't mention the special offer, so I will probably call to confirm.

      • Glad to hear you'll be with us a while longer :)
