Importing Wine from Italy/France

Hi all,

Travelling around Europe at the moment and first trip away where I am interested in wine. Have traditionally just bought duty free alcohol from airports but this time travelling around Italy and France has opened my eyes their offerings. I have already bought my 6 bottle quota to bring in duty free but am interested in shipping in wine from Chianti when we go in a few days. I understand theres WET tax but the rest is a bit confusing.

So currently I imagine costs of importing to be Cost of wine + 29% wet tax + postage?

if someone has had previous experience of importing wine, would love some guidance.

    Hi bacon lover

why not try google - I used "importing wine tax"

    Heres hit number 1

Unless you also need help in reading PDF's 😀

    • maybe lesson using google ;)

  • First thing I read, but for someone who hasn't done all this before, its not exactly the easiest thing to understand.

Just wanted to confirm it was
    (Wine + 29% Wet + Postage + Cost of insurance) x Gst 10% ?

The issue in giving you further advice, is exactly that - It's not that easy to understand.

There is also Duty that you forget. And Duty will depend on

Some wines are subject to a percentage rate of duty and others are subject to both a percentage duty rate applied to the value of the wine and a fixed rate per lal.

Frankly if you are considering this as an option to snag a bargain, then I think all the effort will prove it to be not a bargain.

If its for nostaglic reasons, like remembering the topless waiter/ess it might be worth the pain.

Years ago, so different rules may have been in force, I shipped a container of goods home from overseas. When I discussed the contents with the customs agent here, they said the wine/liquor was over the limit, and should customs detect/determine it was dutiable etc, then the cheapest option was to give it up. And there were some memories of trips to the Caribbean (151 proof rum)

Fortunately either customs failed to detect the bottles or were compassionate.

      Unlikely in your case

Thank you. Thats why im looking for someone who has recently done this to get an accurate idea. Its exactly that; seems like a bargain here, but by the time you add shipping + taxes, its going to add 30-40+ % costs to it making the only reason to bring it in for nostalgic reasons rather than a bargain (other than difficulty accessing french/italian wine markets in local liquor stores)

  • Once you exceed your concession, you forfeit it completely. So you can't just pay on the quantity you are over.

Wine is calculated on the bottles value. French wines have 5% duty as well. Saying that, importing wine is not very expensive. I'd strongly recommend not including any spirits as their cost is worked out on alcohol percentage (40% etc) and is very expensive.

    • Much appreciated. I wasn't planning to carry more than the 6 bottles between the two of us; more thinking shipping additional bottles/boxes back.

  • do what I do - smuggle wine internally

    • shelving bottles aint my thing

      • Don't worry Altomic's Bikie mates habits have been their undoing of late, so not recommended
