What Does My Boss Want?

Hi guys,

My boss told me that I am not performing my job as he wanted.
Long story short: I asked him what I did wrong and how can I do better. He said that he wants me to do everything by myself without needing to ask question or confirming what he wants.

I said OK, however what if I gave you isn't what you expected, or what if I made a mistake because I didn't check on you first?
He said, well I absolutely don't want that. Then I said: ok, so how do I give you what you wanted, without asking what you want, and definitely without making a mistake? Then he said, well that's up to you to figure out, and apparently you didn't, that's why we are here…. Then he told me to find a new job because I'm no longer wanted.

I don't think I'm being treated quite fairly here. How do I make some sense to this guy?

For info I work at a bank as an analyst.

      • Then you too be water, my friend.

  • Why not move to Westpac? You might get a chance to buy pseudo-luxury car as investment strategy (don't forget to move back to live with mom & dad if you haven't already done so)

  • OP sounds like someone who needs to be micromanaged, who does not have the ability to properly function without supervision. OP needs to improve on his common sense skills, which like your ex manager was implying, is not teachable. OP better wisen up fast or he will be in the same situation in his next role.

Seriously? Why is this even a question? You want to work THERE for that POS?

Be a man, bounce out of there and find a better place to work. Work is taxing enough without having to babysit a boss like that.

  • As an analyst you should be able to analyse the job and come up with a solution, is that not your job?

  • Show some initiative. That's what the boss means. You sound incapable of doing that though, like so many of the whining excuse makers we see.

Corporate jobs are a waste of time and life. Your boss is doing you a favour. Quit being a corporate slave and learn other ways to a quire that what you need.

Im going through something very simmilar, except I left it all too late. If they refuse to tell you what needs improvement, you need to contact HR and the union (if youre with them) immediately. With me, we had about four meetings, each 2 weeks apart, where they told me I wasnt performing but wouldnt tell me how. When I communicated to them that this situalion was really stressing me out, they set up a meeting which they said they were going to finally tell me what I was doing wrong. In the meeting we sat down and they told me to quit on monday or they will put me on a stressful PIP program and if I fail, I will not get paid my entitlments. According to HR, because we had the four meetings about my performance (even though they werent productive at all) they were well within their right to put me on the program. Banks are currently decreasing FTE in corporate and private bank and it is cheaper to bully people into quitting than pay a redundancy.

  • your boss wants recommended outcome/action justified supported with data and analysis when asking you to analyse. at this level you should be able to analyse a situation, clearly state the problem and recommend a course of action. that recommendation should be supported with data.

this is only the first step in a business decision, your findings will then be discussed to make a decision. Your boss is right, you should be able to do everything up to this point without any assistance.

i present outcomes in the following format:

    exec summary:
situation is x, recommended action is option 3

    Data sources are:

    detailed analysis information:

  • If what OP said is correct, the boss is an idiot.

Boss should be leading by example, not acting like that.

As said by others, It just seems the boss doesn't like you. Better to just leave. Don't let it get to the point where he fires you, leave on your terms.

  • Disabled user. Did the OP get fired?
