Samsung Galaxy S Free on The Virgin $39 EasyCap (Incl 300MB and $300 Credit) + 3 Months Free

850

This doesn't appear to be advertised at the moment (Free on $49 is being promoted), but it's the cheapest, decent (ie not slow and with a reasonably up to date OS) Android handset that I can see on the market at anything below $40/month.

Add to that the current 3 months free offer by applying the "dancehall" code and possibly a $100 credit (although I can't work out how to apply that) for new customers* and it's an even better deal.
Works out to $819 total ($34.13/month) over the life of the contract (or $719 - $29.96/month if you can score the extra $100 Credit)

I'm a current customer nearing the end of contract in the next week.
My plan is to flip back to Prepaid at the conclusion of my contract and then sign up on this (assuming it's still available) to try to get the $100 Credit as well.
In the past, I've been credited with "new customer" deals with Virginmobile when I have used this method.

*NOTE: The $100 Joining Credit is reportedly not applicable to the $39Cap offer.. despite the fact it is listed on the Virgin website here:

    • Used both side by side, Galaxy wins flawlessy.
Polished UI, lag free animations (Nexus suffers a bit of jitter even without many apps installed) and smaller resolution.

Unsure if 2.2 of Nexus One has SWYPE, which is also worth noting.

      • What you say is true, if you swap N1 with SGS in your statements.

        • Indeed, I regularly use both as well as manage a large phone repair centre and really there isn't much difference between them. It's undisputed that the Galaxy S has more powerful hardware, however the mediocre filesystem and lag/pauses you get when installing applications dampens the experience. The Nexus is as pure android as you can get, and your quite right, scrolling isn't perfectly smooth especially with LWP's.

But what it really comes down to is what's more important to you - being on the forefront of software updates BOTH officially and unofficially with Cyanogen rom always being updated first for the Nexus or the Galaxy S with the 'most' powerful hardware (Galaxy has an awesome S-AMOLED screen) with with a gimped and lagging filesystem (which is set to be fixed, from I can see from the leaked versions of Froyo). Again, this is without comparing the physical build of each device which is highly subjective.

@twig the devices have equal resolutions but is slightly sharper on the Nexus due to the smaller screen (higher apparent resolution; dpi). Nexus also does not have swype (but can be installed just like it can be installed on any android phone).

  • Gah. Torn between whether to get this excellent deal, or wait for the NextG Telstra Model, which from screens linked on whirlpool (what everyone thinks will be the new handset), it looks nicer than the standard i9000 model IMO.

    Decisions decisions! Gaaaaaah!

  • Was it me or did I previously see virgin offer this FREE on a $29 cap plan? Then it was changed to $5 handset repayments on $29 cap. Total $34. Now that deal is gone?

Anyone wanna trade a Galaxy for my iPhone 3GS 32GB?

    • It was you.. Virgin previously has this $10 on the $49 Cap which was ridiculous as Optus had it for $0 on their $49 Cap.

Was just browsing the Virgin site and I found this:
    http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/ProductDetails/7700/Sams…
    $15 a month, $50 credit limit and 50mb downloads

    • Yeah that works out to be $34 per month.. But for $5 more you get an extra $250 of phone credit and 250Mb's of data.. well worth it if you ask me! and makes the $39 Cap the better option!

      • yep i wouldnt get the $15 plan, but just putting it out there for anyone who just wanted the bare bones with a flashy phone

        • True, but it could be worth while for anyone looking to buy the handset outright. It works out to be only <strike>$714 which is cheaper than some of the online shops I've seen</strike>. Of course, it also means you can pay it off over 24 months and thanks to the ACCC it has a warranty the length of it's contract, giving you an extra 12 months over a store bought phone.

Edit: ACTUAL PRICE: $759 Saw correct calculation for price below but still may be of interest.(strikethrough won't work for me)

This is great deal but don't hamper the phone with the crappy Virgin 3G network.

I have just stopped using an iphone 3G on Virgin (in Melbourne) and had no end of problems with the network - 3G data at a crawl, dropped calls, calls going straight to voicemail, no service. I often had to turn off 3G to be able to make a call, even in the CBD. I tried 3 different handsets, all were the same. Friends with the same handset but with Optus direct had no issues so I can only assume that Optus 'direct' connections get priority over Virgin.

I unlocked the iphone and put it on a 3G cap with Telstra and it works fine so its definitely the Virgin network.

I bought a Galaxy outright and am also running it with a Telstra cap, I'll sell and upgrade if they bring out a NextG version. Even without NextG its 20 times faster than the iphone I had on Virgin.

By all means go for the deal but give the sim/plan to someone else!

The handset is fantastic by the way but there are well known (unfixed) USB connectivity/sync problems for a lot of people, including me:

    • Up here in Sydney Virgin and optus are on the exact same network! we even have optus yes time on Virgin and make FREE call's and txt's to optus or boost phones because of that!

Must be a melbourne thing. and not having virgin move over to the optus network. but it all good in NSW :)
Good info for those who live in melbourne though!

      • They are the same network here too, in theory - but apparently not in practice!

Can you advice where you bought fone outright please and how much if you don't mind me asking?
Did it have any of the carrier enforced Rom or apps installed?
      Thanks!

      • I bought it from one of the stalls in the local mall, just over $800, sorry don't have the receipt with me right now and can't remember the name. AllPhones were the same price but had no stock.

It came with some Optus shortcuts but you can delete most it and it was unlocked. Working fine on Telstra right now.

Telechoice has the Samsung Wave on Virgin's $19 cap if anyone is interested-it comes with $50 credit and 50mb data.
The specs are really similar to the Galaxy's. I got one and it's really impressive. Anyone after a really good, cheap phone should consider getting one-my brother's gonna get one as well now.
And for anyone worried about the OS-Samsung's Bada looks really similar to the Android on the Galaxy and their app store has plenty of good stuff, and it's always growing.

    • So is it possible overwrite the Wave ROM with that of Galaxy S?

      • Not yet… I had a look around after reading that too.
I'm ready to buy, going to take the plunge with the Galaxy S. I'll likely need the extra 200Mb data that comes with the $39 Cap over the $29 Cap that I'm currently on anyway.
With the 3 months free, it'll work out to being $34.13/month over the life of the contract.

        • just make sure to install the credit usage monitor app so you can make sure to never pay over the $34.13 thats the first thing i'm installing on my phone! excess data will cost you 0.2c per kilobyte and at $2 a meg you could easly get a $2000 bill in one month by downloading only 1GB of data

  • better than iphone4?

  • +3

    porns better with samsung galaxy

  • I've been looking around for a new unlockable phone to pair up with my current no contract TPG mobile deal.
Thanks for the link to the $34 Cap deal twig, $816 total vs. $936 has persuaded me to get on this one.

  • Actually I just re-read the OP and if you take into account the 3 months free deal with the $39 Cap, it works out at $819 all up
So no real benefit in anyone getting the cheaper $34 cap right?

Anyone know how exactly Virgin apply this 3 months free access fee?
Website states that "you will receive 3 months access fee applied as credits to your 1st 2nd and 3rd bills. Offer applies to access fee only"

Assuming the full $39 is the access fee (?) it sounds like you pay the $39 and they refund you $39 = $0?

    • +1

np damo, but if you're getting a plan with it you might as well just use the $39 plan since u get more quota and credit for $5 more a month

if you insist on using tpg, might as well just get it outright and it'll pay itself off over time

  • I just tried to get this deal this afternoon - being an existing pre-paid customer - and was told flat out no to the 3 month free deal… The lass on the phone was actually pretty rude and blunt. Any other existing Virgin members manage to get the 3 months free successfully?

  • Yea i noticed that… :( Told the lady on the phone that others had and she basically accused me of lying…

    • i'd just call back and try ur luck with another person
      works with jetstar lol

  • +1

Ok so it seems the cheaper $34 Cap is also eligible for the 3 months free access fee.

So if this 3 months free access fee is indeed a true 3 months of $0 for the plan this would mean 21 months X $34 = $714 min cost right?

I guess it all hinges on how virgin administer this free access fee…

    • +1

No, because the "access fee" is only $15 and you pay a handset charge to bring it up to $34, if I read it right.

    • The $34 comes from the $19 Easy Cap ($50 calls/text, 50MB data) + $15 per month handset repayments.

      So you would get $19x3 off, so a total of $759. (vs. $39x21 = $819 for the $39 Easy cap - $300 calls/text, 300MB data).

  • cheers Twig, the only reason I've been considering keeping my TPG plan was to take advantage of saving $$ by buying a new phone outright.
But I guess this plan with 3 months free is that good that it makes sense just to use the plan.

  • Ok stumpo I see what you are getting at.

So the cheaper $34/month only has a $15 access fee, but the $39/month has the full $39 access fee?

    • Yeah that's right. Except now I remember, it might be that the phone is $15/mo extra on top of the plan, to bring it up to $34/mo, in which case your "access fee" is only $19/mo. And by rights, that is all they will give you free for 3 mo. Try your luck though, I'm only speculating.

But if you're looking for one outright, I'd suggest reading up about the SGS on Optus $49 cap. Because a couple of weeks ago people were getting one, then cancelling the contract the same day, and only paying out $560 all up, and walking away with a shiny new SGS! I believe Optus closed that loophole, but I thing it only went up to like $660 or something.

  • Is Virgin's warranty of the phone the same as Three for 2 years or just 1 year?

    • Just one year, Voda/Three are the only company with 2 years.

  • Gosh what a great deal. For low data users this is a winning plan. Plus the Galaxy S is truly awesome.

  • tempted to get this but wonder if other companies will come out with great deals soon as well with higher quota.

    • Very tempted also. But wondering whether HTC Desire HD might be worth the wait, as I would prefer HTC as a brand. Also seeing how fast the prices drop on both the handsets and quotas, I am hesitant on going on a two year contract.

      • Prices are always going to drop, and there's always going to be the latest and greatest phone. The way i see it is to get best bargain at that point in time. re 2 yr contract, you can always swap to a new one with the same carrier.

        • how can you swap?
dont you have to pay your phone off first?
is the carrier really going to take a 2nd hand phone off you and give you a new one?

  • does this phone come unlocked?

    • yes, all the smart phone other then the iphon's come unlocked!

  • Was anyone else informed that they had no stock and did not know when the next shipment would arrive?

I still ordered it and will wait a few weeks. The lady I spoke to just told me to not accept the parcel if I already had a phone by then and they'd cancel the order.

I also had a little trouble getting the 3 months free because I was on virgin pre-paid. First of all it was no free months, then I simply said that it was okay I'd just port to another prepaid sim(really wouldn't have minded doing it), then she came back with 2 month which I still said no to and then, after another chat to the manager I guess, I finally got the three. The only reason I preferred to sign up directly with them is because they will roll your existing pre-paid balance on to the plan.

    • my phones been shipped! should be here soon! i guess "allot" of people ordered one so they ran out quick. first come first server i guess.

  • $100 bonus credit now available for the $39 cap!!

    • So it seems. Getting even more tempting. Either this really IS a great deal, or they are just trying to sucker people into taking this deal, knowing that something much much better is just around the corner…

      • But you can not combine the two codes

went to a virginmobile store in chatswood.. now im a happy galaxy owner! i only waited about 15mins to process my details. $39/month easy cap + 3months free! no virginmobile branding in the phone or apps(even vibe). it plays my avi without convertion! can htc desire do it as well? now i have to look for a good full body cover..

    • Were you with Virgin before signing up? Might have to try this.

      • im a new customer! :-)

    • Doh, i sooo should of done this too! silly me i ordered over the phone thinking it was only online or over the phone you could get the 3 months free… if i knew the store's did it i would of gone to chatswood asap! and walked away with a phone.

  • I notice in the fine print
“Leave anytime, just pay the outstanding balance of your phone (if any), plus $250 if you leave within the first 6 months”
does this mean you can actually get the phone by paying $250, or this $250 is on top of the minimum 24 months cost?

    • before the "leave anytime..".. fineprint says "Min cost over 24 months is $936". less 3 months free!.. very good deal! :-)

      • ahh yeah it says the cost of the phone is $936, which you pay off at $39 per month.. so on the $39 per month plan you are getting the calls / data for free :)

  • I just got my phone then.. activated and working great, love this phone its awesome

    • i'm waiting on mine. did it get delivered by a courier or australia post?

      • 1kg Messenger Post Courier satchel.
Got mine about 2pm-ish today and it is charging (so excited)…
Actually arrived 8:15 am but since I wasn't here the courier would rather comeback so he can sighted my ID.
        I ordered 18 Aug just after midnight…

Dang, I thought there would be a pouch and a micro SD card included…

can you jailbreak this like iphone?

    • LOL
      this aint no iphone…
no need for that silly jailbreaking

  • Has anyone got the 3 months free AND the $100 credit?

Ive checked the website and if I want to add more data to this plan its $15 a gig right?

    • The codes don't stack unfortunately.

If you want to add more data, you might as well go for the $49 Smart Cap - 2GB included, $300 call credit, unlimited SMS to all networks in Aus.

  • I tried the Virgin Store in Marion SA, unfortunately they won't do the 3 months free in store, I have to sign up online.

However the online order process only allows the one bonus code as Spik3balloon said, no stacking, so I chose the 3 months free instead of the $100 credit.

It should arrive next week. :)

    $39/month for 24 months, 3 months free = total $819, pretty good!

  • OK, so the "dancehall" promotion code is invalid from 22 Aug midnight, so no more 3 months free access. Now the joining credit of $100.00 is valid with the promo code "neptune".

I chose dancehall on a $49.00 smartcap last sunday morning (49x3=$147). I personally felt smartcap is more worth than easy cap, even though its $10 more per month, but the "CAP" credit roll over feature is really cool (I think only virgin is providing it) and the unlimited SMS to any network and the "2 GB" data, when you can do tethering as well. Just Awesome.

  • Just picked up one of these. Should be at my door by next week sometime.
