How Do You Use Your Credit Card to Make up The Minimum Spend to Qualify for Bonus Points?

I obviously use mine to pay off the groceries, fuel, bills etc but what do you do when you are just short of the min spend to qualify for the bonus points? Do you top up your opal cards, stock up on movie tickets, bulk buy toilet paper for the next 10 years etc?

If you have the cash just advance pay your utilities or phone bill.

So you're spending money that you would not have spent had you not had a credit account, in order to get almost worthless tokens.

    • Diji is right. This is exactly the trap that they want you to fall into. A (Qantas FF for example) point is worth, at screaming maximum, 0.75 of 1 cent. If the difference in real money that you spend is any more than this then you are just playing their game.

so don't play their game. Play the game that favours you, the consumer. If you're getting the equivalent of 0.75 of 1 cent value for a QFF point, then you're redeeming for toasters/TVs/gift cards from the Qantas store, which I personally think is a complete waste and misuse of frequent flyer points. Use the QFF points to get upgrades to business/first class or redeem premium cabin reward seats and then the QFF points are worth a lot more. That is of course, assuming that you value flying up the pointy end of the plane. If you don't particularly care about that, then yeah, those QFF points aren't really worth much. It is after all, a frequent flyer program, so the rewards are mainly found with their flight rewards.

Or Buy Westfield eftpos card used anywhere

      Card fee defeats the purpose

      • $4.95 for $999 gift card
0.5% for 1500 points whilst ensuring you receive the 75k bonus points is not a bad strategy IMO

        • Ok I'm convinced.
Im struggling with the latest info on finances. I also got negged in the other forum about eftpos information.

My credit card has a double points promotion at the moment if the minimum monthly spend is over $2800.
I currently earn 0.5 Qantas Visa points (1.5 points if using amex) per dollar spend.
Will the Westfield card still be worth it? I will be using the Qantas points to upgrade flights.
It's not a new card so no bonus points.

        • @mmd: IMHO it is not worth the hassle. Just imagine that you have to carry an additional physical card with you all the time with the possibility of it not being even accepted at some stores. Especially because the difference in the points that you earn by using your credit card as usual and the *current promotion is not that significant.

    • isn't there a rule where gift cards don't count as eligible purchases?

      • +1

No. You probably getting mixed up with amex cash backs and even then they still work.

'Credit Card to Make up The Minimum Spend to Qualify for Bonus Points?'

Which credit card you know have this bonus points scheme? Never heard of???

    • at least have your grammar and English in check before you make such an outlandish comment

      • Waiting for a wonKer like you to wipe clean my dirty grammar. You Fool

  • For cards that have a qantas spend component to get lounge passes, lots of poeple buy a refundable ticket … I assume this will count towards the min spend too.

  • Just get Wish egift cards at 5% discount from a few places, e.g Cashrewards.
These cards can then be used at Woolworths Supermarkets, BIG W, Dan Murphy's, Cellarmasters, BWS, Thomas Dux and Caltex Woolworths Petrol. They have an expiry of 1 year.

  • Prepay a mix of utilities, rates, insurances, groceries (gift cards). It does take a fair bit of being organised and disciplined - share it around numerous expenses you've got and you won't be too far in advance on any one expense.
