Voll - B44 V2 Bookshelf Speakers Pre-Order (End of May Delivery) $94.95 Including Metro Shipping (Save $25)

980
OZBARGAIN5

Today we've just released details of our new B44 Version 2 bookshelf speakers and we're having a pre-order sale of $20 off for a limited time. We thought we'd give OzBargain an extra $5 off this price you need to enter the coupon code listed above to get the extra $5 off. There's very little profit at this price and it will be the cheapest you will see them. for a very long time.

V2 of our B44s is a significant improvement on V1. With a larger 1" tweeter, improved woofer low end response and an all new third order crossover. A prominent audio gear reviewer on whirlpool has reviewed the prototype recently here: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2597987

Remember we have a money back guarantee - just pay $10 return shipping and we'll refund the rest no questions asked.

This is a pre-order item and being manufactured right now. End of May is a conservative estimate for delivery but of course we can't be completely sure we will be able to begin shipping by then. We are always happy to refund anyone who asks.

We will be announcing an active version (the Voll A44) of the B44 V2 in the next month or so but delivery of that wont be until July at the earliest. The A44's will sell for around $170. We personally prefer passive speakers as they give you choice of amplifier and are also not putting all your eggs in one basket if something goes wrong many years after warranty.

The much awaited Voll subwoofer will also be available in July for around $120.

      • Thank you!

  • Just placed an order, I've been looking for a nice set of bookshelf speakers at an OzBargin price point.

  • Man these look much better than those mass produced speakers selling for 150 bucks

  • Would the active version be suitable as small DJ monitors?

  • Keen to order but I'm looking at my cart and it wants to charge me shipping:

    Parcel Post: $15.24
    Courier, 6 - 7 Days: $13.86
    Express Post: $57.42

    • Let me know your postcode (via PM if you want) and what you were trying to order and I can double check, sometimes our shipping calculator can be a bit whacky.

I just realised that the post title is a bit misleading to country folk - due to the bulky nature of the speakers we subsidise shipping to country areas but can't completely cover it - sorry if there's been any confusion there, I will clarify it now.

          Hi Mentok,

I just checked and that's unfortunately the best we can do for shipping to your location. Sorry about the misleading title here - I've updated it so it's clearer.

          Regards,

          Jay

        • @chiefbodge:

Yeah, lol, I was whacked $28 for shipping.

Ah well. By the time June rolls around I probably won't care. And if I off load my current towers, they'll cover that cost.

But yes, country shipping is a bummer

  • Bought one with the Q5 Pro ! Thanks OP

  • if i plan to order more than 1… anything you can do on shipping (since it's to the same address)?
we're an ozbargainer after all… haha

    • Always worth asking! Unfortunately at this price we can't offer a better price for multiple pairs.

      • Placed order for 2 (including amp)
Though it's cheaper to grab it from china… much rather support locally right? =)

  • Staying tuned for the active version

  • +1

With the amps suggested, I can see the Topping VX2 being great value.

But what about these ones here?

    https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Topping-VX3-Digital…

    • +3

We'll be placing an order with Topping in the next week and we'll definitely be getting some VX3s. Will confirm pricing as soon as we know. It's a bit of an odd combination though - no DAC but has bluetooth input, it also doesn't seem to have a switch to switch between headphone / speakers, so I'd assume you'd have to unplug the headphones when you want to hear the speakers. Seems well priced though and I'm sure would fit some people's use case.

Topping amps are so rock solid that if you want to take the gamble buying from aliexpress it might well be worth it. We have incredibly low fault rates on them - in fact I reckon I could count the fault rate on one hand and we've been selling them for years. We find it very hard to compete with aliexpress prices due to GST and the fact we airmail in most of our amps anyway, the direct prices we get from Topping / SMSL are not a huge amount better than what some chinese sellers sell them for).

Buying SMSL from us is worth it in my view though as the fault rate is higher and it can be basically impossible to return the amps to china for warranty (we don't even bother ourselves).

If anyone who pre-ordered a bundle wants to swap the amp to a VX3 (probably wouldn't be many) we'd be happy to accommodate.

  • Tempted, but not sure they'll be an upgrade from the KEF Eggs (2005.2, 2.0) I just bought :/. Anyone happen to have the eggs and gen 1 Voll's for comparison?

    • I think the eggs would blow these out of the water.

  • I woke up this morning and realised I forgot to use the coupon. Where do I hand in my OzB card?

    • +2

If you weren't the person that emailed us this morning about this please PM or email me your order number and I'll sort out a $5 refund for you.

      • It was me, and you are awesome for taking care of it so quickly. I'm scared that I have opened myself up to a world of awesome & good-value hifi gear though.

On that note, is there such a thing as a tower speaker that has a similar ethos? Affordable but punches way above its weight? I'd love to replace my current 20yo Wharfedale bookshelf speakers with something more substantial for under $500

  • How suitable would these be for outside undercover?
I have a pergola that i would like some speakers for

    • They aren't really an outdoor speaker and haven't been tested as such. To be honest they would probably be fine under cover but we wouldn't be able to warrant any damaged that was cause by that. They're also not very bug/spider proof so that might be an issue too.

      • No problem, thanks for the info.

How long is the pre-sale on for?

        • +1

we'll give everyone at least until the end of the weekend because we understand not everyone is in a position to make the decision on the spot, but at this stage we're not sure

  • Hi op. Can you please give me some advice between those speakers and pioneer sp-bs22-lr

    • Unfortunately I haven't ever listened to the bs22 but I've heard they are pretty nice speakers. My guess would be similar kind of quality but ours are cheaper - but that's my biased and uneducated guess. This review may be helpful: http://noaudiophile.com/Pioneer_BS-22/

And maybe there's someone in this thread that has listened to our V1s and the BS22 and can provide their thoughts?

      • I got a pair of Pioneer and an SMSL 98. Basically, I feel mine are boring, so warm, lack of bass and lack of high frequency.

  • Anyone selling Older V1 ACTVIE SPEAKERS which have amp integrated?

    PM me.

    Thanks

    • Hi Braintrain,

The V1 B44s were all passive, we never released an active version. The A44 (active B44) is a completely new product.

      Regards,

      Jay

      • I'll wait or go for an alternative as i can't afford new ones atm.

  • Should I wait for the A44? Currently running laptop with old school Z5500 + bluetooth adapter. Sounds OK but feels like I should reduce my footprint.

  • Ordered, planning to pair it with an old Yamaha natural sound ax500 and a passive technics sub that's been lying around. Hope it works well with the sub.

  • Since you'll release the sub in July, will you do another promo with the whole bundle (speaker/sub/amp)?

    • +2

We'll probably do a pre-order promo on the sub. And perhaps a bundle with the A44 & Sub but the current pre-order special for the B44 V2 will be the cheapest you will see the B44 V2s for the foreseeable future.

The bundles with sub will be welll priced though even at RRP.

      • Will you also perhaps bundle the sub with the V2's bodge?

        • Good suggestion! That would probably a popular choice for those who want to get their amps from elsewhere.

        • @chiefbodge: Excellent. I'll put my wallet away for now then.

      • -1

would you consider doing deals for those who have purchased the current B44s? Given I am buying the amp from you now… =)

        • We're considering the Voll S6 / Voll A44 pre-order deals over the next couple of weeks and will let everyone know when we have come up with something.

A better deal for existing customers is certainly a good suggestion but it depends how it would work technically.

  • I may have missed it but when does the deal expire?

    • +1

It'll definitely be active until late sunday night but we may keep it going longer (haven't come to a final decision yet).

      • Thanks Chief! I've just ordered

  • @chiefbodge: I Hate you, cause I bought a pair. Now comes the missus >:)

    • your challenge is how to seamlessly integrate the speakers without her knowing… =)
      "it's always been there"

  • +1

My old Logitech Z-4's died and the sound was good but way too "bassy". I've gone back to crappy Logitech X-230's and I rarely use them, just use the headphones …

    But this is super tempting!

Found some awesome old school amps on Gumtree for $50-100 too. $200 for a decent set and make my computer/music listen BOOM! :D

Now to get War & Finance approval……

    • Niiice. Let us know what Amp you end up with and what you think of the sound as I'm sure others here will be interested… not at least me :)

  • +4

Just letting everyone know that this deal will run until the night of Wednesday the 5th of April. After that there will still be a pre-order special but it will be $109.95 instead of $99.95 which will run until we receive the initial shipment into our warehouse.

The $5 off coupon will continue during the whole pre-order period at least.

  • Would there be any problems using these in a 5.1 home theatre setup as the fronts and rears? Or are there any worthwhile alternatives in this price range?

  • +1

    These vs Edifier R1700?

    • +1

I'm also pretty interested in either this comparison or the R1280T which Amazon suggests is a neck-and-neck contender (especially if the B44 is paired with the SMSL Q5).

  • Will the active versions get a decent discount too? =)

    • +1

There will be a pre-order special but it's too soon to provide specific details at this point.

  • I have marked this deal as expired but as discussed in my earlier post there is still a pre-order special running for $104.95 ($10 more than this deal).

    • Damnit I missed it. Will the deal come back?

      • The original deal wont be coming back but they are still $15 off currently which is still a pretty good deal, it will be running at least a couple more weeks.

  • At this time are there any specs available on the active A44's, such as the inputs and built in amp output?

    • The A44 will have L/R RCA input and a mono sub output.

Output power will be 2x15w, although it definitely feels more powerful than that.

  • +1

    ****Question*****

How do they compare with EDIFIER R2000DB?

I bought the edifiers for 330 bucks and I quote like them but I would like to know if VOLL are any better than these.

Anyone want to compare can visit my place with the volls for comparison.

    Just a few updates:

-It's looking like we might be getting stock in of the V2 mid may (a bit earlier than originally predicted).
-We have had a price drop from Topping. $25 drop for the VX1, $20 drop for the VX2. Anyone who has ordered these as part of a bundle will be refunded these amounts in the coming days.
-We have two new amplifiers: SMSL AD18 and Topping VX3 which will be in stock in around 1 week, if anyone wants to switch to these amps from what they originally preordered feel free to let me know.
-Due to some minor issues found with the prototypes of the A44 and S6 these will be further delayed unfortunately - no ETA on this stage but probably August at the earliest, we're really trying hard to get these products manufactured but they need to be of the highest quality.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. I'm really looking forward to getting the V2s into the hands of customers and would really love to hear your feedback when you get them!

    • +1

Nice, honest work CB! Now, bring on the Sub ;)

    • +1

Thanks for the update, great work on the customer front there. Looking forward to the A44s!

    • any chance of bringing back the $25 off? Would totally buy it then…

      • Unfortunately we wont be offering $25 off for a long time, maybe never again. It's been incredibly popular and if we kept it longer we'd probably go out of stock before we receive our August order.

I would recommend that anyone interested with getting the V2 at $104.94 should buy it within the next 10 days as there wont be any sales on the V2 happening for at least 3 months due to low stock. The $5 off coupon will however live on for the time being to reward anyone who comes via OzBargain

    • Thinking of changing up the Q5 Pro for the AD18, will be looking at getting the sub as well. How will the sub connect to the AD18 since it does not have a dedicated sub out port?

      • +1

We are currently testing ways to take the speaker output from any amplifier and convert that into a suitable input into the sub. We aim to have a plug and play solution ready when the sub comes in stock. The cost for this will be $5-$10.

A sub output on the amplifier is ideal but our alternative solution shouldn't be too much hassle (mainly just more plugs to plug in and a bit more cabling).

        • Ok thanks for the info, will be changing to the AD18. Awesome that you are allowing people to change the pairings post sale! pm sent with order details

    • Damn. I would have switched to the SMSL AD18 if I had known. Looks like my order just got shipped :(

      • Hi Johnka,

If you would like to swap shoot us an email and we may be able to work something out.

        • They use the same chips eh? I'll see how I like the Q5. If I like it I'll just move it to another room and replace it with an AD 18.

        • @Jhonka:

Unfortunately I'm not sure what amplifier chip the Q5 Pro uses but they are both high quality amplifiers and when using with the B44 it really comes down to what inputs / outputs you want.

-Want to easily connect a subwoofer? get the Q5 Pro
          - Want bluetooth or headphone jack? get the AD18

The AD18 is more powerful as well but the Q5 Pro is plenty powerful enough for our B44s.

  • +5

Just another note that we will hopefully beginning shipping pre-orders late next week if everything goes smoothly with customs.

    IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PASSIVE SPEAKERS
As this deal got far more popular than we expected and made it to the front page of Ozbargain I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone who ordered that our Voll B44 V2 speakers are passive speakers. Unlike common cheap computer speakers such as logitech etc.. they will not plug directly into your computer / phone. You will need an amplifier to use our Voll B44 speakers. We have tried to be as clear as possible about this but when a deal goes wider than our usual customer base we always have some customers who assume that the speakers will be plug and play into their source -we'd much rather provide a refund now than send them out and have to go through the returns process.

As mentioned in the deal we do have an active speaker coming out later this year which has an integrated amplifier. It will be called the A44.

  • +1

All pre-orders have now been shipped. Anyone who bought should've received a tracking number in their email. Some Adelaide / Victorian customers will receive their orders today. In apologise in advance to any WA/Queensland/Tassie folk - our courier can be very slow to those locations, unfortunately that's the downside of trying to get the best possible price for customers. If anyone still hasn't received their order within 2 weeks please feel free to let me know and I'll look into it.

    • Got mine today. Can't wait to get home and set them up!

Just an FYI about the courier; the box was left on the front doorstep with no knock on the door, and they are (very) obviously speakers. We live on a main road, and if my wife wasn't home I suspect they wouldn't have been there when I got home from work…

    • Got mine today (VIC) can't wait to try them over the weekend!

      • How are they?

        • Was flat out all weekend, so will try tonight!

        • Had a good listen last night - absolutely fantastic! For the price of $95 they are built well and sound amazing - even with my cheap Lepai 2020 amp. Imagine with a better amp!

Very impressed and I'm sure the sound will improve as they loosen up a bit…

    • Mine just got delivered (ACT), I look forward to hooking these up tonight.

  • Just set these up! Incredible quality for the size. Excellent detail. Happy happy customer, thanks!

    • +1

      thanks for your feedback! :)

      • +1

Just hooked mine up, really impressed. Absolute bargain at $120, let alone $95.

  • My order arrived yesterday (shipped to Sydney). I also got the SMSL Q5 Pro. I'm amazed at the quality. It's like I'm hearing some songs for the first time. Shipped earlier than expected too. Two thumbs up from me.

  • Mine arrived in the mail today! (Sydney), they sound bloody great, though I have a set of B&W DM604s as my main stereo but the Volls are still awesome! Great quality for the price, got mine with the SMSL AD18.

  • Grr, my order was due for delivery yesterday and I had a family member stay home all day just for the delivery, yet they heard no one ring the bell. Now I have to go pick them up near the airport since they charge for re-delivery sigh. The positive feedback will have to be enough to keep my spirits up for the long drive there and back.

    • Hi Leichhardt,

Sorry to hear about that, that sounds really frustrating. Usually they leave the parcel at the door unless you don't have a safe spot to leave it. I'm surprised that they wanted to charge you for re-delivery, usually it's us that gets charged for that. If you want to organise a re-delivery and it does cost you money I'd be happy to reimburse you but I'm pretty sure they will end up billing it to our account.

      Regards,

      Jay

      • +1

        Good news!

I just gave the local Brisbane depot a call and it looks like the driver wasn't able to finish up all of his jobs yesterday, which means it will still be delivered today. I guess there was some confusion at the Sydney customer support end about re-delivery. All good for me since I'm working from home today.

Looking forward to testing these ;)

        • Let us know what you think!

  • Mine arrived yesterday. Great sound. I was surprised by the amount of bass these things produce. I can't force my TV to downmix to stereo so any Dolby/DTS signal coming through just produces a buzzing sound with the amp. I'm going to have to grab a decoder off ebay to sort that out.

  • Yeah picked mine up this week, after missing delivery on Tuesday.

Hooking them up tomorrow, can't wait. Though we've had a change of mind of how we were going to use them, so might be up for an amp soon too…

  • I'm not sure what to think so far. I've never owned bookshelf speakers before so this is my first foray into speakers that aren't just logitech 5.1 systems. For some music I am definitely liking the speakers, whereas other music I feel like something has been lacking maybe. Not sure if it's the lack of a sub, which I was planning on buying when you guys have it ready, or if the fact that i have it connected via usb to my pc has any effect at all, or if it's just the fact that i've never heard music the way it was meant to be heard before. I got the smsl q5 pro, and i tried all their different eq settings but i haven't really found a sound that i really love yet.

    • +1

You're probably just used the thumping heavy bass of the Logitech speakers. But muddy, thumping bass is not good sound, but we are often conditioned into thinking that more bass = better sound.

The logitechs would be missing out on a decent mid-range too.

Maybe the Volls would benefit from a small sub, but you definitely don't want heavy handed bass with most music. It should support and be subtle and tuneful. It's the detail in the songs that you should notice. I can definitely notice the flatness going back to other speakers, even if they have more bass. It's all in the detail and refinement of sound.

    • +2

Hi Pry. Yes, as per Placard above… it's the 'Boom & Sizzle' that's the instant attraction for most of us to sound and that's great fun (think big Subs in your car, massive systems at concerts & nightclubs etc.) however there's also a lot to be enjoyed from far better balanced sound too and you don't always have to be a Classical or Jazz fan to appreciate it either. 'Boom & Sizzle' is pretty cheap & easy to achieve with cheap Woofers and cheap Tweeters however a flat response curve from low through to high frequencies is incredibly difficult to achieve and usually attracts a big price tag. Welcome to the world of Hifi!

I suggest you live with them for a while, have fun experimenting with EQ/Tone controls on your Amp and run them in over the next few weeks. After a bit of use they will loosen up plus your hearing will also adjust so don't discount them just yet. By all means add a small Sub to them to lift the bass a bit but whatever you do be sure to enjoy exploring the different sound you can get from them. Don't just play one or two tracks either… play an entire album and really make sure you hear the differences between these and the Logitechs, especially with different types of music. The Logitechs are great but are built for a purpose, to be a good all-rounder for games, movies & music on a budget. The Volls are also great but are built for a different purpose, 2-channel near-field monitoring… also on a budget.

There are also a lot of variables at play here too. Different Amps and different spaces can make a huge difference to different systems. On top of that we all hear things very differently plus our hearing changes over time so it's all very difficult to assume that whatever one person likes another person will too. If you don't like them then that's perfectly fine. You can always sell them on but I recommend you stick with them for a while because I'm pretty sure with a bit of experimenting you'll manage to build up a nice system around them but be careful, once the Hifi bug bites you'll spend the rest of your life trying to build the best system you can and that can get very expensive :)

      • +3

That's good advice Steve - Also Pry, we do have a money back guarantee so feel free to contact us to organise a return if you decide that they aren't for you.

When working with the manufacturer to develop our S6 subwoofer we tested several samples against lots of different brand lower end subs and we were really disappointed with how many just completely ruined the sound of our B44s. It's actually been a really difficult journey because sacrifices need to be made at the price point we are targeting - we've been trying to avoid creating a product that is just a muddy mess.

I went into this project quite unenthusiastic and with the view that all subs sound the same, but research has taught me this certainly isn't the case and that cheap subs at least all have their own set of glaring issues.

The design that we have settled on is far from perfect (the frequency response graph makes me want to cry), but in the end we had to accept the limitations of our price point. The most important thing (I think) is that it improves the sound of the B44s, unlike any of the other subs we tested in the price range.

        • +1

Stop teasing us CB! Bring on the Sub… Bring on the Sub… Bring on the Sub… Bring on the Sub…

        • +2

          @SteveAndBelle:

We finally placed the order last week so we should have a better ETA soon, also pictures and specs should be released in the comings weeks.

        • +3

Thanks for all the replies, I have spent a fair amount of time listening through some of my favourite albums and I have come to appreciate these speakers much more than when I first listened. There are a lot of small details that I'd never even heard before in some songs that I could hear on the Volls. It's just a totally different sound that I wasn't used to, but I definitely won't be needing to make use of the money back guarantee.

        • @Pry: Boom… and another Audiophile is born :)

        • I'm loving mine. I've got them hooked up to my PC which have also replaced some old Logitechs, connected them up with the SMSL Q5 Pro. The sound is great on them, but I'm finding the sound stage to be coming from the left more. Balances and positioning are equal. I do have a bit of hearing loss, but not too much, in my right ear and I think that's what it is, but in all my years using the Logitechs I never noticed it at all.

Like the others, on first listen I didn't think there was much more to it compared to the Logitechs, but I'm definitely picking up lots of stuff that I never knew was there. I've spent nearly a whole week getting to know my music collection all over again.

I'm already considering the active versions when they're out for another room in the house!
