Kogan Mobile Cust Svs Says Ombudsman Says You Cannot Have a Prepay Account if You Do Not Have a Credit Card

Well I was trying to start a new service on the one dollar deal no porting just the new account to get the deal for data

I did the activations online myself but for some strange reasons my visa card keeps getting rejected despite it has money. A check on the visa shows they never even called for the one dollar authorisation at all.

So I rang their cust svs to ask and they ask stupid questions like have you used your card for another Kogan service in the past? What have that got to do with Donald Trump Nuclear codes? Are they nw becoming like Spotify where if you have done a deal you no longer can do deals as they recognise your credit card?

So I ask what if the customer do no have a credit card. Then this untrained rep says Ombudsman says you cannot have a prepay account if you don't have a creit card. I asked "Is that so?" He says yes. I ask which law says that? He cannot tell me which legislation govern that requirement. So he made up something and say due to "National Security"

I will have a long talk with Ombudsman.

No other telco ask for credit cards when activating that is always an optional thing. They only ask for License oir Medicare or Passport. However Kogan Mobile makes it mandatory to have a credit card as a condition to having a prepay account and even says the Ombudsman condone such a practice which he cannot even provide me information as to which legislation says so.

I said you obviously don't know the laws. He then says he has been doing this for Kogan Mobile for years so that qualifies him as an expert (in law, I guess)

This is a load of BS. Any views?

How dare a telco say you MUST have a credit card to have a prepay account. What does the law says about discriminating customers with no credit card when providing a service?

Point is I do have a Visa Debit I like it this way as I do not like to owe money I prefer to spend my own money. And if I keep coming back for deals they have that's not against any laws. It was not explained clearly that "if you are using the same credit card you have used in the past for a Kogan deal then you are deem not eligible for this offer" It only says "for New customers"
Any customer who have left and come back again is considered new since they have left. Privacy legisation prevents companies from storing your information for no purpose, since you have left there is no reason to keep storing your information especially your credit card information and the rep says the credit card that was used for previous deals are not eligible how would they know unless they are storing this information which is not allowed by law.

    Call the TIO
    https://www.tio.com.au/ or https://fos.org.au/

If it is National Security, then the Terrorist Hotline may assist. lol

  • It's the typical BS from companies such as Kogan.

I used my debit card to verify my identity on multiple Kogan accounts. Not only that I used the same debit card to verify the account of somebody else I was helping with activating their service! I entered their name in the card details section but used my card number instead.

    National security my arse!

Try using somebody else's card number? (With their permission of course)

  • Indian call centre, say no more. They'd rather bluff than admit a problem.

They did exactly the same shit to me - charged my card and then claimed they coiuldn't identify me so I couldn't activate.

And then they refused to refund the $1 by not giving me email contacts but insisting the only way they could contact me was by private number so they could call me, me not answer and the mark it as "resolved".

SO I had to go to the ombudsman because scummy Kogan wouldn't refund $1.

    Enjoy your $40 fine (profanity).

Vote with your wallet. Go somewhere else.

Kogan or any business may refuse to provide their services to potential customers if they deem that the customers isn't acting in good faith.

  • It is of concern to me if their system recognised my credit card as one that I had used before and now no longer a customer, they may have breach confidentiality by not deleting my card information after I left. You are not to store these information according to law. Heck you cannot even store my name and address once I left.

    • A similar thing happened to me - I figured it was the credit card thing also.
They're not much help on the phone. In the end I decided that Kogan is probably taking advantage of the trusting Australian market. In the meantime, they're getting a bad rep, and not helping themselves any.
What you said about the call centre, I also found to be true - they will tell you anything to get rid of you (sadly, I found OPTUS doing this also).

Anyone know of a provider who has an Australian call centre that will actually put you through to the supervisor when you ask (they have bee putting me through to their (equally unhelpful) friend or put me on indefinite hold until the system disconnects the call.

    • " Heck you cannot even store my name and address once I left."

Sorry, that is not right at all. Telcos can, and do, store your information for years after the service is no longer active.

This will all be covered within privacy statements. The Privacy Act does not prohibit it either.

      • For the police and court but not to determine if you can enjoy a second or third round of specials

Six years ago you enjoyed our 1 dollar special you are now no longer entitled to any special deals thanks to us keeping your records for years and years just to help us make profit.

        That sounds very legal.

        • Australia's privacy laws are terribly weak. It is a joke.

  • Since when has Kogan been concerned with abiding by Australian laws?

Just ask if Kogan HK can send you the sim card…
