Usually no, unless they offer PayPal as an option and you have Amex setup via that.

I wonder how many dollars they'll knock off my electricity bill if I do a sick 360.

  • Energy Australia accept AMEX without surcharge if you set it up as direct debit.

I use Amex for the following bills without paying a fee:

    Energy Aus via DD
    Telstra via Paypal
Uni Fees via Post Bill Pay
    HCF
    NRMA via Paypal

    • How do you use PayPal for nrma ?

  • Is it worth paying water/gas bills with amx?

Probably not worth the extra mucking about, to limited payees, to gain additional points.

Actually, it is very little (or no) extra hassles involved - if they accept AustPost BillPay. At Austpost Billpay site, choose Paypal, associated with the Amex card, and that is it.

      • But you can't set it up to do an Automatic payment.

Other times, you may just want to pay a bill, easier to have Visa/Mastercard and just do it, than fluff around on third party providers.

        • You got a point, it may not be feasible if you prefer to use automatic payment.

Use the AMEX to buy WOW Egift cards on the Enternaiment Book, Cash rewards etc. (AMEX edge pays 3 points per $).

take egift cards to WOW and use them to buy only1 Visa cards $100. Can pay all sorts of things with those.

    • You are one smart chick- really!!

I checked this out. Unfortunately, Woolworths no longer offer their own branded prepaid Visa or mastercard. They do sell third-party prepaid Visa or master cards but they only come in denominations of 50 and $100. However, the showstopper is that they cost $5.95 each. So if you want $1000 worth of prepaid Visa cards it's going to cost you $59.50.

Good attempt, but not practical now. Woolworths used to have their own prepaid Visa and MasterCard but they stopped selling them at Christmas time.

    • Isn't there an activation fee on Visa Gift Cards?

  • Sydneywater accept Paypal associated with amex cc.

  • Regarding Telstra and Energy Australia I pay them direct debit with AMEX. You don't need to go via Paypal.

  • Firstly go with provider offering no Amex surcharge, plenty of low cost one does. For some government service don't bother, only if you're lucky otherwise most are very stingy. For commercial companies pretty much there're always choices available.

  • Anyone that accepts AMEX nearly always does with EXTRA fees.(except maybe some hotels and restaurants) You have to check if there are extra fees for AMEX and then work out if it is worth it. Typically the points to be gained do not warrant the extra cost of paying with AMEX.
